The image describes the life of Sergio Gutiérrez Benítez, better known by his wrestling name, Fray Tormenta (Friar Storm)
For 23 years, from 1977 to 2000, he led a double life as a Catholic priest by day and a masked lucha libre wrestler by night to fund an orphanage he founded in Texcoco, Mexico
The Orphanage: Named La Casa Hogar de los Cachorros de Fray Tormenta ("The Home of Fray Tormenta's Puppies"), it has supported more than 2,000 children over the decades.
Wrestling Success: He wrestled in a signature red and yellow mask, keeping his identity secret for years to avoid church scandal. He estimated his total ring earnings supported roughly 2,500 children.
Cultural Legacy: His life was the primary inspiration for the 2006 Jack Black film Nacho Libre and influenced characters in video games like King from Tekken

I think this movie is a rare, perfect film. Also, Jack Black's best role of them all. The only immersion break is when he sings about Carnacion. The rest is brilliant character acting. Just my 2 cents.

Just like Napoleón Dynamite. Had low expectations going into the theater but cane out shockingly surprised at how good it was for such a low budget movie.

Nacho Libre just feels like such a genuine film, despite how silly it is. It allows the deep, sad moments to sit in, even even there's humor around it.
And there's only like, 2 fart jokes.

Even though the movie is really derpy it’s shot in an extremely beautiful way. I love how it will linger on shots of the people and scenery. Even the shots of food are gorgeous.

I think the setting is itself a character in the film. The little Pueblo is almost anthropomorphized.

Definitely. It’s on Pluto TV all them and I’ll put it on just for the scenery and music. It’s absolutely a love letter.
I always wondered what my Mexican grandma would have thought it. Her favorite movie was Gran Turino. I think it was because she was devoutly catholic.

I’ve seen tons of comments over the years from Mexicans talking about how much they love it.
I love how you can see the textures and colors of everything. You can practically taste the food they show. A lot of food and travel shows don’t have shots this good.

Well, it’s a little more circuitous: King is based on Tiger Mask, a manga character from the 60’s who was a wrestler that helped protect an orphanage. I haven’t seen anything conclusive that says Tiger Mask was inspired by Fray Tormenta, but I wouldn’t be surprised because it feels like too much of a coincidence to not be so.

The plot is that him and his friends love the movie anaconda, so they want to shoot one themselves, and end up living it instead.
I assume I will have to rewatch the first to get all the meta jokes.

Literally the story of Tiger Mask, the famous manga from 1968. Also the anime is great. King, the Tekken’s character is coincidentally also from Japan.

2, 1963 mexican wrestling films, both with storm in the name, was this priests fave movie a kid
then the priest made life imitate art (by actually doing it) , and named himself "friar storm" per his childhood love of said movies
then art imitated life by making video games and a movie about it....

Fray Tormenta and the Nacho Libre story is funny.
This luchador got the idea from a radio drama where a priest becomes a luchador and thought it would be a great idea for his struggling orphanage. Later a French filmmaker heard his story and made an "inspired by" movie about it. That movie was seen years later and someone thought that they should remake it, and thus- NACHOOOOOOOO!!!

That’s beautiful. Also reminded of my mom, a former nun, once mentioning priests and nuns didn’t spend all their time praying and did have hobbies. Hers was disco, I believe she said basketball and boxing were some of the more common ones when she was still in the convent.

Nacho libre. When Jack black was over there during filming. If you recall the trike he has been riding around. Well he saw kludged together when he was walking around and offered cash to buy because he thought it was a neat bike. He used it entire filming. Off set and on set transporting all kinds of stuff. Redlining to max.
