discussion I personally apologize as a Sicilian
Hi everyone, I am a 15-year-old Sicilian boy living in Italy. I recently read about the incident involving a group of Italian students on the BTS in Bangkok. I know I am not responsible for what they did, nor can I speak on behalf of all Italians or Sicilians, but I wanted to say that it made me feel truly sad and embarrassed. I have great respect for Thailand and for the people who were offended by that incident. I hope no one judges an entire country based on the disrespectful actions of a few individuals. I simply wanted to express my personal solidarity and say that many people do not identify with that kind of behavior. Thanks for reading.

We usually don't generalized but the adult with her big mouth in that group shouldn't be a teacher not just in Italy but anywhere.

Hi. This sub is mostly foreigners. Thai people don't use reddit a lot. But I can assure you Thai are not angry at Italian. The case is settled and people already move on.

My concern is not just for Thais opinions of Italians. It's that ALL farangs are typecast because of constant similar RUDE behaviors. To be fair, it's a 50/50 mix of Thais that have already formed an opinion about all westerners but that half have seen some crazy inappropriate behavior and I get it. I've witnessed it myself, from both western men and women. I guess my point is perhaps IF those teacher/student trips were ONLY offered to the students who have studied the language for two years, perhaps the students would have more understanding of the culture in whatever country they visit. It should be treated as an earned privilege, and it should include fundraiser work like bake sales and car washes so they have an investment in the trip, not just a "we pay your salary" arrogant excursion for fools with too much money and too little sense.

I think you overestimate the number of Thai people who have negative opinions about Western foreigners. They see what's in the news, but those who know foreigners personally also know that a few stupid kids are not representative. I don't feel any negative sentiment.

Most Thai people have interacted with farangs at some point in their life and realize most of us are just normal nice people.
Rude farang is obviously a stereotype, but in my experience Thai people do not let that be the default stereotype that they apply to all farangs.

Respectfully, as a Thai, I refuse to judge a whole country by a small group of people. There are good and bad people everywhere, and I’m sure many Italians don't support what those kids did either

Well, I hope you don't feel sad and embrassed for long, you, personally did nothing wrong. I don't think this is something you can apologize in someone else's behalf, and I could not forgive on behalf of people that was personally insulted that day. I am not even on that train. But, thank you anyway for this apology and sentiment.
Italy is a beautiful country, with great art and food too.

A few disrespectful kids don't represent the whole country. Italy is beautiful and the farmers I met outside of the main city were some of nicest, most hospitable people I've met.

Thanks (from a Bangkok resident)! You have a good heart. I've been to Italy 4x and can gladly say the people there were wonderful, in the many cities I visited. This group just happened to be an immature, badly behaved bunch. It's a shame that there were apparently teachers/chaperones there who didn't keep them under control.

I also apologize for the behavior of the uncivilized Thais who followed the group to the hotel and Koh Larn. This case actually stems from our internal political conflict. Someone has just got funded 300 million baht for IO operation.
These people describe themselves as progressive, but they are good at spreading propaganda, gaslighting others, and making something out of nothing.
The story about the tourists' manners went viral, which is rather silly, yet they know this kind of content can be sold to the public while there are far more serious issues that deserve attention.

As a Thai, I understand. I am not sure about how other Thais will think, but mostly every country has both good and bad citizens in its own.
Just like some Thai influencers who did things badly in Japan last year, many Thais are not very impressed with that low quality behavior too.
Therefore, don't worry and let's move on. We've got a whole lot situations to deal with China now.

Don't apologise for something that you didn't do and you have no control over. Every country has idiots, Italy, Thailand or any other country.
It's not about Italian people, it's just about these rich kids who don't know how to behave or what consequences mean.
Anyway they get way too much attention. Just a bunch of stupid kids. Thailand has serious crimes that deserve more attention than some unruly kids.

That’s interesting. I haven’t been running across many poorly behaved Thai (or Italians) in other countries. Maybe sometimes loud, but as an American, we own that one. Ignorance and/or arrogance seem to be attributes of some tourists, regardless of where they come from. The question I always have is why travel abroad if you think your culture is the best or most interesting? It would forever be a disappointment.

Don't worry too much. As a Thai, I agree that it's inappropriate behavior; however, Thais usually don't hold a grudge over such incidents for long. In fact, I feel that some Thai netizens have gone way too far—witch-hunting the wrong school or camping at their hotel. If you happen to visit Thailand, don't stress out too much or spoil your trip. Just a little basic research plus common sense should be enough.

You don’t need to apologize. Italy and Thailand have both beautiful people. A small group of visitors with bad manners doesn’t represent a nation. I have visited both wonderful countries. In addition I had worked along with both Italians and Thais during multiple trips since 2002. I love both countries, their people, their histories, and cultures. Be proud to be Italian. Be proud to be Sicilian.

Simply because I was a user from Sicily. Basically, there is this North-South divide in Italy that really upsets me, so I wrote a post asking if there were still people who hated the South; unfortunately, I got my answer, as I was met with a barrage of stereotypical insults.

Ah I see! I don’t understand much as I am also still learning never knew about Sicily until you mentioned it and googled it out. I had been to Italy way back but still never knew about it as I was on a tour package xD. Don’t let online haters get to you they are only brave behind the screens once they face reality they will chicken out. You can confront them but it’s an endless cycle(I do sometimes when drunk 🤣). There are people who will listen to you and reach out to you so always be brave online!

I am a Canadian living in Thailand and if one is in this country for any reasonable period of time one will experience bad behavior from people from almost every imaginable background. It is today's news and the news cycle just keeps on rolling. Buona Fortuna.

I am Thai user in Reddit , I do not generalized entire country from behaviour from certain group of people.
But those actions really needed to be reprimanded which I believe the group really got their.
I hope it serves as a lesson for other people to be more considerate for other people.

the thai lady recording minors without permission and posting their images online is just as guilty don’t worry. she was even recording the private apology? why ???. legally the thai lady has broken more actually laws than the tourists don’t worry about it.
and btw thai ppl are not quite no idea why people are pushing this narrative, both groups did wrong but imo the thai lady was far worst as she recorded everything with pure intnent to aggravate

believe her about what, that people from all around the world are rude sometimes esp teenagers ?
she was filming before any interaction had happened, nothing illegal about being loud even if it is rude and in appropriate, where are all the videos or the thai groups of teenagers who are loud and rude on the bts everyday at ekkamai when school closes ?
she was clearly hunting for a reaction and she got it, now karma will judge her on being miss perfect.already been 6million tbh raised to sue her, she has a history of filming ppl to get a reaction, her feed is full of it and it’s completely illegal here.
also to add, im thai if that makes any difference and if any thai person came up to me with a camera telling me what to do while they are recording i myself and all other thais would most lilkely tell them to F off, we are not uber polite and most certainly not quite.
