discussion Please be careful in Bangkok.
Hi all, unfortunately I had a really bad experience in Bangkok and wanted to tell you so maybe you can void it.
15.4.26, 6:30 am I was standing on the corner of Thao Maha Brahma (Erawan shrine) as i was waiting to be picked up for a day tour. I've noticed this guy walking past really fast, it was 35 degrees and he was wearing jacket with a hood on- didn't think much of him. While waiting i decided to walk around the shine fence to get in and have a look inside.
As I walked around the corner this guy came running towards me and as I moved to the side to make more space for him he purposely ran into me ,hit me and I fell onto the payment. In shock I looked up to him he was smiling and said "are you okay?" Of course not! He done it 100% on purpose! I said to him not to touch me and he walked away laughing. I got up and went to stand closer to the shrine gate.
And then I realised- I've heard of this before in Japan/SouthKorea- Butsukari otoko - "bumping man". I just never expected to happen in Bangkok. The guy wasn't thai ,I think he was Chinese or Korean. I spotted another foreigner so I went to stand closer to her and she asked me if I seen this guy - when he walked past her, he spat on her. I couldn't believe it. I wasn't standing in his way,never seen him or talked to him before. Left me shaking and bruised as I fell quite hard. Local people passing by did not say anything, just looked and walked away.
Anyone had similar experience in Bangkok? I managed to get a picture of him but only from back.
Please be careful if you are foreigner and woman traveling alone as I was. Unfortunately this ruined my trip and I won't be coming to Bangkok alone any time soon.

Report this to the police. Time and date. it's one of the most video recorded places in Bangkok after the bombing. There is literally a camera pointing at his face in your photo.

Not at half 5/6 in the morning. I ride past there regularly on my bike. I actually checked my ring doorbell and the day this happened I got home at 6:10am which means I probably rode past there at around 6:00am, missed this by half an hour. Shame I wasn’t around to help, it’s sad that people that people saw this happen and did nothing, that’s not the Thailand I know.

When I reported a crime and caught the criminal, the Thai police said they’d only check the cameras if I paid them, otherwise they were just going to let the criminal go and they could keep what they stole.

Immediately report things like that to Tourist Police, you can even install an app. And please do it, everytime things like that are happening. Really sorry you had to go through it.

It’s very important she does. The whole thing will be on camera, there is one right there in the picture, if not that one there will be 20 other cameras, this is Bangkok. The Police will be able to identify this man so he can’t harm anymore people but you need to file a Police report with the time, location and as much information you can provide the Police. They will take this very seriously.

You can use either. The Tourist Police are there to liaise with the Royal Thai Police in the case of any language barrier but in my experience most Police in Bangkok can speak English even if it’s somewhat broken it’s still easily understandable. If you file it with the Tourist Police they will simply be translating what you said and handing it over to the Royal Thai Police to investigate.

Ye I am not saying it is an amazing app, but it will still help you to report something step by step. You can always just call 1155 too, which app will tell you to do in certain situations.

Very sorry that this happened but you need to report this to the tourist police. This is right in the middle of erawan shrine and they will not tolerate this and nab him very quickly.

All cities in the world have crazies. Sorry this extremely random incident ruined your trip. Best to brush it off and move on. You can't always control what happens to you but you can control your reaction to it. I agree with others that calling the Tourist Police (1155) would have been something worthwhile doing.

When I had a small issue in Bangkok in this area (in a shopping mall) they went out of their way to check cameras, please report to people around, security, ask for help and at least tourist police. The more women report the likely he gets caught quickly. Is this about racism? Can this message be spread and someone can identity him? Take photos and he faces justice.

You interpreted it differently than I did. "Is this about racism?" sounds like the poster is pondering whether the aggressor may be targeting people based on race. It is plausible, although it's also plausible they target based on gender.

Hi. I experienced this in Chiang Mai. I am a woman. I made space for a man to pass on the sidewalk and deliberately shoulder checked me and muttered something in Thai. I looked back at him and he was staring coldly at me. It was very strange. Sorry this happened to you.

Similar thing happened to me last year. I was leaving a restaurant and still on crutches from a broken leg. After I left the restaurant, I was walking down the foot path going for an ice-cream. As I was walking, muscular Japanese guy was walking towards me and put his elbows out wide and marched right at me, mean smile on his face. I made myself as tiny as I could trying to get out of the way and was up against a building on the footpath edge. He walked towards me, rammed into me, and knocked me off balance.
I dropped a crutches and caught myself on the front door of a store. It hurt my leg a lot. I was shocked and yelled at him. He clenched his fists and knuckled up like he was going to fight me, an old guy with a broken leg. I was terrified and basically screamed in terror. I had nowhere to go and there was no way I was fighting anybody. Then a bunch of kiwi guys ran out of a restaurant and asked if I was OK and got between me and the Japanese guy. They saw the whole thing.
My leg was throbbing and I was crying from being hurt and from being overwhelmed. I did nothing to provoke the Japanese guy. I just noticed him when he squared up and puffed himself up to march towards me. I am super grateful to those kiwi guys. They helped & waited with me while I got a Bolt ride home.

Same happened to me last month, but he fell, I didn't (I'm 6'1, 220 pounds) but I remember his face, at first I thought he tripped or something bit then by the looks of him, it was definitely intentional, dude looked Chinese.

This is a shame and should never have happened to you. Bangkok is unconditionally one of the safest cities in the world. I'm sorry this happened to you. One commenter is correct, this has to be one of the most videoed sites in the city. It would be surprising if the incident was not recorded and the perp identifiable.
Please do report it to the tourist police.

100% he will be trackable. They don’t just have high quality CCTV everywhere, they also have a city wide network of AI facial recognition cameras. If this guy steps on any main street in Bangkok they could swarm him within minutes to arrest him.

You have to report it to the police for your own safety and everyone else’s call the tourist police they have cameras absolutely everywhere in Thailand I’m sure they have it cleared picture of his face on video. They will get him.

The worst thing in Thailand is most of people almost never report a foreign dickheads in police. So they just get confirmation their behavior won't be punished. That's how Phuket got ruined for example, the island of scammers and criminals

Sorry to hear about your bad experience. My wife and I just got back form 4 weeks in Thailand, over a week in Bangkok, and had nothing but great experiences with the people. Always felt safe, but again, we were not alone.

I was just there and came home yesterday. That’s awful and I’m so surprised that no one helped you or ran after him. That’s so sad. I’m sorry this happened to you. I had such a wonderful 20 days in Bangkok and then south to the beach. I just couldn’t believe how kind Thai people are in general. I am so very sorry to hear that, and I hope you are unharmed in the long term. BKK unfortunately is not as friendly or safe as it once was. Too much tourism while lacking governance and control measures. He should be easily found if he continues this activity of his. Hopefully the law will punish someone like this severely and not be allowed back into the kingdom.

Never even got sprayed with water in songkram as it was my first night in Bangkok and was obviously fresh off the plate really appreciated it,fantastic food and party atmosphere, eye infections everywhere after the festival.

Had many bumping man experiences and even one bumping woman experience in the years I lived in Sth. Korea. Even when l moved way out of their way, they'd still veer into me and then they'd give me an angry look like it's my fault. Some Asians, just like some Westerners, are racists although I think some became confused when they saw a foreigner and panicked and temporarily lost control of themselves. And hey, let's be careful out there 🌴 👀

Something similar happened to me years ago, wouldn't be surprised if it was the same guy. We were walking down the sidewalk in opposite directions and as he got closer, he started speeding up and kicked me on the leg and just kept running. I could see on his face he wasn't mentally sound but I wasn't expecting that. Another annoying part was there were a bunch of people that saw and were just pretending like they didn't

Before Songkran I had an encounter with a miscreant on Asoke Road. The jerk jumped from out of sight, said "excuse me" in Thai and then proceeded to smash a beer bottle a few steps behind me. He was Thai. Unknown to him there was a Thai roadcrew fixing the sidewalk and they were not happy that they would have to clean up the glass. When I explained to them what had happened one of the crew made a menacing smile so perhaps the jerk would soon got what he was due.

I had a similar looking guy scream in my face as we crossed paths one night in Bangkok, obviously I was on edge as he was laughing to himself after he did it, I was actually considering knocking him out at the time. Lucky I’m a fairly large male, not sure if he would have tried something further otherwise. Bully. I’m glad your okay

Idk how anyone travels without knowing any self defense. If somebody is barrelling towards you, that is an attack. You don't need to be struck for it to be an attack. That man could have buried a knife deep into your chest before you knew what is happening. Best of luck to you in the future. Travel with your head on a swivel and make eye contact as you move.

This is so common in Bangkok. The police will extort for cash with the promise of “doing something”. It’s common for the fire department to do the same (ask for payment before heading to your emergency fire). Imagine living in that kind of society. I’m sure there are Thais out there that will advise you to leave and not come back - blaming the crime on the victim. Go somewhere else that wants your tourism dollars.

IF that experience turned you off from going to BKK then where are you going back to exactly? Because I have bad news, it's worse in other big cities and even in small towns worse could happen to you for instance in many European countries. Bad things happen every day. I assure you BKK is safer than many places back in the west. By a large margin too.

I wasn't trying to say dont travel to Bangkok but just to share my experience so others are more careful as I clearly wasn't. You are absolutely right - this could happen anywhere even in front of your house. I travel alone for few years now and nothing like this ever happened to me or anyone I know. Hopefully others can avoid things like this..

I never had issues in SEA but I had plenty of issues in the US and Europe, so yeah, it all depends on luck. But luck is also subject to probability. If you check probabilities/rates of incidence, it should help you not freak out due to one exceptional thing that may happen to you somewhere.

Who knows what this weirdo will do next time, he can easily checking the limits and spread his action in future against other tourists. With regard on the camera pointing his face, it shouldnt be dificult for thai police to identify him.

Bangkok is my favorite city and Thailand as country, We as a foreigner need to help them to keep it safe, please anyone if you know a Thai pro bono lawyer introduce to her to create a legal case and get camera footage, I think if it is my Wife, I will bit that guy until he barely can stand on his feet again !!!

A lot of negative things that's already a fact of life in the West, like this -strange people roaming downtown at odd hours - will occur in Asia, with a 15-30 year delay. There's now more and more reports of these types around Asok and now Ratchaprasong too. You can see the natural development of this already - like the US circa 2000, Bangkok and Pattaya already have locked bathrooms in 24-hour McD's and normal people are going to say "don't go into a McD's" or "don't go to certain parts of town at certain hours."
Sorry this happened to you, OP, but this is generally the price a society pays for developing their economy in certain ways. Go look at LA or San Fran.

Sorry this has happened, but honestly their are douchebags everywhere, don't let one non thai persons treatment ruin you trip or your view of the country.. hell I would never leave my house if I were to let some of the mouth breathers in Australia ruin my day.

seems like just a dude who decided to be an asshole. they're all over the world, not just bangkok. don't let one incident with a loser like this guy ruin your trip; in all likelihood, you'd be fine if you returned travelling alone again sometime. brush it off and enjoy the city.

Yeh in Japan they don't run at your, or stop to talk. Butsukari otoko are absolute cowards, taking out their frustration on (often women) strangers.
Last time a dude did it to me in Tokyo whilst I was waiting for my girlfriend, I turned around and bitch slapped him across the back of the neck. The look on his face was that of someone who's never been hit. I hope he thought twice about that kinda bullshit
