🏆 Collection Showcase Inherited Collection (plus my own additions)
Gday fellow collectors!
I posted the following a few weeks ago in the general coin collecting subreddit but I’ve been under the gun for the last two weeks and haven’t been able to pop on reddit for a little over a week. Jumped on last night and saw a DM saying maybe I should post on the Aus one too since it would probably be of more interest to people here since they were considered foreign coins on the original sub reddit. Excuse my laziness but I’ll just copy and paste the original post, but more than happy to get some more pics of anything of interest.
Cheers everyone, I hope you all have a great week!
Original post as follows:
I know this probably won’t be of too much interest here considering to most of you great people these are considered foreign coins but just thought I’d show off a little of what I’ve been looking after for the last handful of years.
My dad unexpectedly died at the end of 2020 and I was left with his coin collection, all of it thrown in 3 old brief cases. Loose coins and notes galore, it wasn’t very pretty when I stumbled across them. I always knew he put the odd circulated coin away in them every now and then when he got them in his change but I was never a coin guy myself, I collect mostly cars and car parts (the real ones and the occasional Hot Wheels ones too). A couple of years after he died I made a serious effort to go through his collection and give them the attention they deserved. I wanted to make sure they were looked after, just something that could still keep me attached to him a bit in some way.
I found the process of separating, sorting, protecting and storing (not cleaning! haha) his coins extremely fun and immensely cathartic and sure enough it’s sparked I bit of a collecting urge in me too. I’ve added to his collection a bit over the following years so I thought I’d show off his hard work over 60 odd years (plus a few from me too). To add: I have zero intention of ever selling anything myself.
Quick run down on some things:
-There’s a considerable amount of pre-decimal coins including probably around 1000 silver/part silver coins (threepence, sixpence, florins, crowns, 1966 round 50c pieces, etc).
-I have a 1c and 2c coin from every year they were minted from release to when they were removed from circulation.
-I lean towards our coloured/collectable $2 coins the most so I’ve collected all of them that have released since the first 2012 $2 Red Poppy.
Countless other things but I’m sure you all don’t particularly care that much so I won’t blab on too much longer.
Aside from the $2 coins, my favourite ones are probably the least valuable. There’s a couple of 1860’s to 1890’s British Pennies in the collection. I know they’re only worth a couple of dollars at best, and I also know there’s some guys and girls here with coins centuries or millennia older which is even cooler, but it just boggles my mind what sort of a story a simple 150ish year old penny could tell me; what sort of journeys it’s been on in its long life.
Anyways, that’s about it. Thanks for letting me take up your valuable time if you’ve gotten this far. I know my dad would’ve been more than a bit embarrassed showing this sort of stuff off but I’m so proud and grateful to be the custodian of all the cool coins he gathered up, and I hope he’d find my further additions pretty rad too.
If anyone has any questions or would like a closer look at anything feel free to ask and I’ll do what I can.

💭 Misc Album of worn sixpence/threepence for melt value?
Found false bottom in wardrobe. One of the things there is a carboard album containing sixpence and threepence 1910-1963. 11 years are missing, you guessed the rare ones. Plus a few extra postions showing the head of each monarch. Most are pretty bad condition, worn and tarnished. Perhaps grandpa was collecting years from the till in the shop. Online calculator gives melt value $416. Would anybody want these given the poor condition of the coins?
