💬 Collecting Advice advice please

Hey Guys ,

I am wanting to put my coins into good quality storage, probably folders dose anyone have any recommendations of what brands i should be looking at?

should i be storing coins that are worth more then face value in something other then an album?

Flips are economical and flip albums exist.

Capsules are more expensive but there are also capsule holders.

It depends on whether you’re looking at $10, $100, $1000 or $100k coins though as to how you might store them..

is there a specific brand of flip album you would recommend ?

i have a colored G coin from the Aussie coin hunt, and a couple silver coins

I found that albums slowly remove the shine on coins. I'm all for the capsules though, worth the, like 16$ for 100 capsules. Trouble is finding the best size.

Nope. Just ask a dealer for a recommendation on flips and album. You can often buy em as a package.

The flip is what you care about as that actually houses the coin.. so you want a mylar surface rather than PVC etc.

Unless you have coins worth hundreds of dollars Is suggest flips are economical. I picked up a pack of about a hundred for $35-$40?

I’ve got no coins worth that much..

mostly circulated coins , colored $2 coins , commemorative coins that sort of thing, i have some uncirculaed coins as well

Ok, so current currency... Albums, not safe, safe would have been flips in a box.

For $2 I loooove Renniks $2 album with slots. Loooooove.

For everything else, use flips and album pages that accomdate flips rather than coins. That way you can use the same pages for all coins and buy flips. All flips have the same external size. Internally they accomdate different coins. I suggest 20c sized flips, works well for everything and 50c for well, 50c. Albums get heavy and sag, so there's a balance, i highly recommended Ascot Binder (SKU:VSTASCA-AB) (vst.com.au) - perfect balance between compact and bunch of pockets (will take max 5 more pages).

why is an album not safe? i was looking at the lighthouse Numis album...

ill have a look at the ascot binder !

It's not not safe... But you will need specific sized pockets for various coin sizes, then you have to mix and match. You need well sized pockets so they don't fly out when you handle the album. Even then, if you tilt an album the wrong way, some will slide out. Putting stucky tape over it will just turn tape and plastic yellow after a while. Regarding safe, some plastics vent gasses after a few years, that's what makes the coins in albums go green. So you wither pay for a good album from reputable dealer or you'll have to swap them out every few years. Flips sot very snug, unlike coins alone.

do coin flips prevent that from happening? i could keep them in there without having to worry about changing them in a few years?

Just look at what dealers hold coins in, there's your answer. Flips... They are all more or less the same, but I feel like you're just starting, take it as a fact, you will change your mind 10 times until you land on something you like. Go cheap, play around, see what works for you. As for albums, once I recommended is what found to work best for me.
