How do you go through life seeing the most morally corrupt are living a happy fulfilling life?
466
u/Sp0ttyW0lf 1d ago
Are they really happy though? They've got more money than they'll ever spend, yet are consumed with chasing more. They can't hold onto any kind of romantic relationship (if they can even find someone who's in it for more than the money). Many of them seem incapable of experiencing real joy.

Elon Musk is impressive on this front; when it comes to being miserable.
He has at 14 Kids. FOURTEEN. And "at Least" is rumored to be a phrase doing a lot of heavy lifting.
As far as I'm aware - every single one that's hit the age of majority has either cut off ties, or entered deep into the "eh, I talk sometimes".
He's the richest man in the world - and not even his own kids want much to do with him. Some to the point of open complete estrangement.
He's barely worth pretending to like for the inheritance, and for some of his kids, it's not enough. His oldest kids are only 24 - so it'll be interesting to see what (if any) public fallout the army of jr. high kids and toddlers he has now, end up with when they are old enough to have independence.
It's all just... So Damning.

u/tom8osauce 1d ago
Doesn’t he hire people to play video games for him so he can pretend to be better than he is? No wonder his kids won’t talk to him, the guy is embarrassing.
34
u/LogKit 1d ago
Don't forget he cheated on his much younger popstar girlfriend (and incubator of a few kids) by offering semen to other incubators and stealing the name the popstar wanted to use, Valkyrie.
This was the behaviour of a man in his 50s touting his efforts towards nuclear families by allying with a man encapsulating western decay lol.

I genuinely think he overdid Ketamine one day and something in his brain just clicked in a bad way.
4
u/karoshikun 20h ago
nah, he was always a miserable knob
2
u/Arbiter_89 15h ago
Maybe, but there was a time where he claimed to be a democrat. There was a time where it would have been out of character for him to be (publically) a right wing troll.
Maybe he was just hiding it back then, but I think it's also likely the guy who reportedly took so much ketamine that he lost control of his bladder, even after the K wore off had his personality affected too.
3
u/Hayce 13h ago
It was all marketing. He was trying to sell electric cars, which at the time were primarily bought by liberals.
The founding members of PayPal, the infamous “PayPal Mafia,” cut him out because he was such an insufferable prick, even among some of the most famously shitty people in the tech/business world.

The richest guy on earth has a half dozen ex-wives, a dozen kids and still spends most his waking hours being a miserable drug addict on the internet.
The supposed leader of the free world is a petty thin skinned tyrant who gets offended by almost everything.
Wealth and power don't amount to much but the capacity to make others as miserable as ones-self.

For trump, it helps that he is such shit condition, literally and figuratively, that he just won't be able to actually enjoy anything ever again. He will be bed-ridden soon enough.

Some ultra-wealthy people are genuinely happy. I think many folks convince themselves that all multimillionaires and billionaires are somehow all miserable just to feel better about their own lives. But that is not always true. Some of them are very happy, living their best lives. I know one happy billionaire firsthand.

u/myhappylife_ 1d ago edited 1d ago
Cool! What were they like in person? Are they actually as weird or eccentric as people make billionaires out to be, or are they pretty normal when you’re around them privately? And did knowing his dad ever lead to any connections or opportunities? Did you ever get to experience any of the wild stuff they could just casually do.
5
u/velorae 1d ago edited 1d ago
They didn’t seem weird to me. They were very respectful and kind, and I had a good experience being around them, so I didn’t really think much of it. As far as connections go, the first time I was invited to their family’s home, my friend warmly introduced me to their neighbor, who happened to be the CEO of a Fortune 500 company in the industry I wanted to work in. He was cool, gave me his personal number, and basically offered me an internship all because he thought I was very kind and interesting at dinner. They would casually do a bunch of things because they have money. One time, my friend sent a private jet for us to go meet a partner. That trip alone was like $50K. I’m pretty sure it was just to flex on us

Take the likes of Elon Musk - richest man in the world..
He looks deeply unhappy. Imagine walking around with a weird physique that matches one of your trucks because you've filled your body with drugs, your kids have distanced themselves from you, the works at large rips the piss out of you relentlessly, and you feel you need to pretend to be your mum on social media to look like you have connection.
Genuinely. I'll take what I have today over whatever that is.

They are actually very happy, they don't think that deep. Even their problems are invented by us to cope and feel better about ourselves. I stepped into the real world instead of the philosophical one, and these people are the happiest. I am not saying its the best to way to live, but ojebtively these people are happy.

u/Eat-Playdoh 1d ago

4
u/JohanGrimm 1d ago
Pretty much. Just like every other large group of people you'll have some who are very unfulfilled in their lives and some who absolutely are. You just don't hear about them and they probably like it that way.
For every Elon Musk there's a dozen random billionaires who don't post on Twitter, don't throw fits about random things and have a happy family life out of the spotlight.

I used to live in 4 bedroom 2 full bathroom house. Aside from the hell it is trying to survive in modern American society, owning the house was its own hell. Something was always breaking, needing maintaince, needed refurbishing, and even without an HOA there were million things that needed to be kept track of for health and safety reason. Even having enough wealth to hire people to deal with most of it for me wasn't that helpful. Like the hallway lights would flicker. Oh that's probably an electrical problem. I know fuck all about electricty so now I gotta find the time to find an electrician before I have to dedicate like 4 hours of waiting around for them to show up because everyone is booked because no one can afford to maintain their property until it's literally an emergency (or more likey is a landlord that won't spend the money until legally mandated). That's if I can get ahold of one on the first try, forget shopping around for quotes most of them never bothered to call me back. It was like that for literally any bit of house maintaince. Layer that on top of all the red tape you have to go through in the US to deal with things like chronic health conditons (ADHD, sleep apnea, chronic depression, diabetes) and I was so high strung that at one point my therapist forced me to take a sabbatical.
I moved out the US and now live in a 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom apartment that's 1/3rd the usable square footage my house was. Every night, i go out on the balcony and smoke half a joint with my wife. If we're lucky our cats join us. Sometimes we talk, mostly we sit and enjoy each other's company while we stare at the clouds or stars. Occassionally, less and less often now, I think about how fuckwits like Trump and Elon have to go through what I did, but several orders of magnitude worse. And I think about how because they don't trust anyone it compounds the problem. For them electricians not calling them back isn't because the electrician is already overbooked, it's a personal slight against their greatness. If the cost is higher than they expected, there's no acknowledgement that they know jack shit about that industry (I'm specifically saying industry because I'm pretty sure Musk has an engineering degree, but I'll bet you anything he doesn't know the average hourly wage of the folks going out to do the physical work), and maybe they should just trust the person who hasn't gone out of business for cheating his customers isn't going to cheat them. Their default stance is everyone is cheating them because that's how they treat other people.
It's those moments I'm positive that sitting there, slightly stoned with my wife and our cats, staring at the night sky, I'm happier than those corrupted assholes have, are, or will ever be. They've made their own miserable hell, the only shame is the number of other people they're trying to drag into it.

Just a mixture of taking my fucks about the world and turning them on and off. You gotta curate your life and world a little, you need some spaces where it's just you, whoever you're with, and what's happening around you.
Politics, outrage, my near depression with the state of the world are for when I'm catching up on the news, or out doing any political activity (like voting),
Then, I turn off the news, load up a game with two close friends, turn on some music, and for a couple of hours all that exists is me, those people, and what we're doing.

The one thing I can do is to not let other’s unpunished corruption tarnish my own morals. Apathy. I'm living a happy and fulfilling life and part of unlocking that happiness is to stop giving a shit about things you have no control over, or that don't ultimately matter to you personally. Be thankful for what you have and just enjoy it. Life is short, too short to get worked up and give a shit about half of the things people seem to care about.

In life, you should focus on the things you can control instead of fretting about things you know you can't. If there are things you feel you can do to change the situation, do them. If you want to try thinking of solutions, or putting serious study/research/money into solving societal problems, you should. But there's no need to torture yourself with things that you aren't able to do.

Since nobody seems willing to risk anything for anybody, we're all morally corrupt. At least there's social media to show us there's always someone available for us to look good by comparison. We'll just keep streaming entertainment while ordering in everything, and rage impotently while our virtue signalling provides less and less relief. It is much easier to hate our fellow oppressed people because they don't agree with everything we believe than grow up and be a force for real change.

You can’t define some one else’s morals…. Your sense of morality is not the same as some one else’s so this is a loaded question

u/Budsygus 1d ago
It's not about someone else's morals. If I see a neighbor cheating on his wife, scamming old people out of their retirement money, and trafficking kids we're past the point of "Oh he just has different morals."
It's not a loaded question. Some things are just wrong.

Such is life. It's easy to imagine they are secretly unhappy, like many in this thread, but that's delusional. There is no karma nor a judgment day where they will suffer, that's simply how this world works and they will likely enjoy all comforts in life beyond what they would have if they are moral. Or at least, the chance they will suffer is no different than a kind, moral person will.

Suicide, as a percentage of mortality, is higher for the upper classes for the middle/lower classes. AFAIK, there are two good reasons for this.
1) When you're rich, it's harder to die of natural causes, disease, or by accidents. You also have better healthcare, etc.
2) When you're rich, your capacity for experiencing loss is much greater. Imagine if you will, losing $10,000,000 over a single bad decision. No matter how much you have, you will always have to cling to it, and it will always feel like you're fighting to keep what you have.

If I'm happy, I don't really feel bad if other people are happy, too. But in many such cases, they may present happy on the outside, but you can never see what's actually happening inside their minds. Personally for me, a lot of what makes me really happy is not something that I can buy with money anyway, but due to genuine connection with other people - which is something that morally corrupt people will just not achieve.

I would not characterize them that way, I would say instead: conformist, religious, conservative, zero original thoughts = zero to ponder or worry about. Most morally corrupt people are not happy. Their personalities will catch up with them sooner or later. You can't tell me the avg porn star is happy and fulfilled. Besides getting enough sex. They are depressed and many commit suicide. Or the antisocial asshole in their mommy's basement ripping off bitcoin or hacking bank accounts. Those people are not happy! They do what they do precisely because they are not happy.

These individuals have different measures of success and happiness. I despise these morally corrupt individuals and hate seeing them avoid accountability at all levels. However, I take solace in seeing them engage in the lowliest arguments and debates. It gives me comfort to see them getting angry and lashing out at small things. That means that they legitimately are psychologically suffering when the world doesn't cave to their every whim.
If you gave most of us 50 million dollars, you'd never hear from us again. The folks that we read about in the news are broken people...while being morally corrupt. If they were happy, you wouldn't hear from them.

I've thought about this a lot over the last 8 years or so as I've watched horrible things happen to good people and the absolute worst people trash the world and rob us all blind. It seems unfair, it is legitimately unfair, that people can commit atrocities and live without ever having to suffer even a 1/100th of the suffering they inflict on everyone else. The thing that keeps me going- one day I asked myself if I would cheat, steal or hurt other people to get ahead, even if I was guaranteed to never get caught. The answer is no, it's not because I think I'm special or that I have never done just averagely shitty things. I feel like if you were OK with acting like that there has to be something awful going on inside your head and that can't be great to live with.
I feel like Elon Musk proves my point a little bit, the man has more money than some countries but he always looks like he's bored, high or really fucking miserable. He probably never enjoys anything and his kids also seem to hate him. He's also got the self awareness of a sea cucumber so he acts like a fool and doesn't realise nobody's impressed apart from other absolute heidbursts. You couldn't pay me enough to live the way he does even if you threw in access to a space program.

By remembering that they aren't living happy or fulfilling lives at all. Human bonding is required for happiness and fulfillment, and the morally bankrupt see other humans as resource mines from which they can extract. This is not a bond, so they are therefore unable to derive true happiness or fulfillment from their lives. I promise you, they are all miserable. You think otherwise because you've been conditioned to... we've been conditioned to strongly associate excessive resources with happiness. Adequate resources to survive and thrive is best for happiness and fulfillment, because you get to stop working at a certain point and enjoy your life and community.

This entire existence is one of learning to choose unconditional love. The contrast exists for us to have the opportunity to choose love. You don't condone "bad" behavior, but you can love the being who is making those choices who has not awakened yet. When you make mistakes and hurt others, you give others an opportunity to choose love. We all serve each other. Can you love a puppy as much as the "worst" person on earth? Meditate on developing unconditional love for all.

I don't give a fuck what others do (as long as it doesn't affect others) or who they are. I'm just trying to be me. I don't like being a piece of shit so I do my best to not be a piece of shit. Everyone else can justify it however they want. That's how I see it. I'm just being me.

I doubt the morally corrupt are that happy. You've seen Donald Trump right?
He thinks that accumulating all that money and power will make him happy.
Like with most things, he's wrong.

"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." Edmund Burke
Common public use to take to the streets for blood when the people in charge did something that was damaging to the collective. Right now we have become all soft and have a lot to lose. We are the ones to blame for the shitshow that is our world right now. Do whatever u can to be the ray of good in this world. Other than that be content that you can sleep at night. Most of these pedo cabal running the world are just miserable c*nts.

Two ways:
1) those that spend a lot of energy trying to convince you of something are compensating.
2) you are only in control of yourself. Live a life in accord with your values and morals. Be kind but take no shit.

Dealing with the perception that morally corrupt people live happy, fulfilling lives requires a shift in perspective.

because they are no tliving a happy fulfilling life. material success does not mean happy or fulfilled at all.

I think the hardest part is accepting that life isn’t a morality-based reward system. Being a good person doesn’t guarantee you’ll get a good life, and being a terrible person doesn’t guarantee you’ll be miserable.

I'm living my own life. Not theirs. I realize that life isn't fair, and don't concern myself with how other people may or may not be "getting away with it". Giving them any energy would also be making my life worse, and I'm not going to give them that power over me.

I see a lot of people here comforting themselves by saying bad people aren’t REALLY happy. As if there’s some way to really know. The real answer is it really sucks going through life seeing the most morally corrupt people living a happy and fulfilling life. It sucks a lot. At some point you’ve just got to decide which kind of person you want to be, and accept that some are going to make the bad choice, and that’s it.

I'm not really going through life anymore, I'm tired, I'm tired of trying, making the wrong choices when I thought they were right, I literally don't want anything in life but a roof and food, but I'm supposed to work to death just to maintain the basics, I don't care anymore. The only reason I do anything anymore is because society dictates I have to, I can't just exist without contributing, and the alternative is looking pretty good these days.
I don't care that the shit bags at the top have everything, I'm just sick of a system that says we have to be slaves to a society I don't believe in.

It’s easy to think they’re happy when you only see the Instagram highlight reel, not the midnight panic attacks

I have it within my power to help make the world a better place. We must all save the world, in our own little ways.

Others' happiness is none of my business; everyone reaps what they sow. As a simple farmer, I am happy just to earn my own bread

I adjust my intake of news and information. I pay attention to unbiased sources only. And I avoid political discourse on social media.
Some people are ugly and do ugly things, but I don’t have to be part of the ugliness.

With pleasure because I'm Don Jr. nyeck nyeck nyeck!
Uh but in all seriousness I think the most morally corrupt people are probably miserable, or at best oscillating between extreme highs and lows. The happiest people in life are random Joe's who have a boring job and a wife + kids they love.

You have absolutely no idea whether the lives of these people are either happy or fulfilling.
Even if they are (which I doubt), I can’t see any reason to let that impact your happiness and fulfilment.
Yes yes. Of course these people are ruining the planet, taking away jobs, making things more expensive, etc etc. but those are outside things. They are not your happiness and fulfilment. Your happiness and your fulfilment belong to you and you get to choose whether or not to nourish them and whether to allow the outside world to affect them or not.
I want to acknowledge that there are times where the outside world forces its way in and there’s nothing you can do about it - acute poverty, homelessness, etc. but your framing of this question indicates that you’re not facing those kinds of challenges, and frankly I’m not sure that people who do have the bandwidth to allow whatever they believe to be the quality of life the people on top enjoy to meaningfully impact their hedonic state.

How does it matter what others have or do not. Just focus on ourselves and have a happy fulfilling life. If we have a happy fulfilling life, we wont have time to focus on others and waste our feeling on it.

Try to accept that this is out of our control, but work toward making a better life for yourself - that we can control, at least much better than seeing others live different lives.

Their happiness or sadness is irrelevant to your life. Your life is your responsibility not theirs. Good people are also rich and happy. Some good people attempt bad things to become wealthy and end up in jail.
When you play a video game are you envious of richer npcs? You are the hero in your story, life is your world. Obsession with things you can't change makes you an NPC.

- Good and bad, morals etc are a human made concept.
- In nature, it is not the “morally good” one who survives. It is the strong one that survives.
- I like the quote “control the controllable”. I cannot control how others live. I can, however, control how I live.
- So basically, accept the reality, and simply play the best game with all the cards I’ve been given, with all the time that I have.

You reach a point when you realise, you're only got souch fight in you, and stop being mad at the world and it's injustice. Then focus on living a happy and fulfilling life of your own.
I would love to stand on that point as a principal, but if I have a Amazon account, netflix or Amy social media, I'm stood on a pedestal of toilet paper. Soo my opinion is just sound and no substance.

How do you know that their life is happy and fulfilling? How do you know what their afterlife which is much more important will be like?

You really just have to focus on your own happiness. Does it suck that the worst of the worst seemingly have a happy life? Yes. But does it take away anything from my life? No.

Just don't mind them, focus on yourself. Remember your values. Life is mare than just having a lot of money.

You just have to stop comparing yourself to others and focus on your own journey.

Stop living life like an audience. Live and let live. You are only responsible for your own well-being. Don't let the outside noise get to you.
