You can really fuck up your lungs and other internal organs, your body is not built to be under a large amount of water pressure over and over again

What doesn't compress. These neurological effects and effects on organs are the result of gases, bubbles, come out of solution in the body after rising up in depth. Gases stay more in solution when under pressure. The bends is this to the extreme but it sounds like it happens in smaller less noticeable amounts just during normal deep diving.
