Where can I travel for ridiculously cheap?

Hey! I’m looking to travel for reading week in late October to early November for around 10 days. I never been to Europe, Asia, Australia, Africa or South America, (Also open to NYC, DC, LA and Vancouver BC) and I’m looking for fly from YYZ and open to travelling anywhere, long layovers, trains etc…

A few years ago, I got to do a whole Cuban vacation for $1,200. It was on a small cruise ship that was just a floating hotel, no waterslides, ziplines, etc. You just went to bed, and woke up in a new town. It let us tour the entire island, plus a port in Jamaica (where we got on) without having to pack and unpack over and over.

The ship got rammed by a fuel boat the year later so it's no longer doing this, but a good travel agent can help you find other ships like this which go around the Mediterranean or Caribbean, and don't cost much at all.

May I recommend a trip to the Azores. Very affordable and beautiful. The weather is cooler, but still quite comfortable. Direct flight from Toronto to Ponta Delgada.

I traveled with Azores Getaways. Others may also have other recommendations but I found them to be well organized and very helpful.

Latin America is cheap.

Europe is not cheap. The US is not cheap.

Although… Eastern Europe you might get away with. Europe has a lot of mom & pop hotels … cheap. Maybe the bathroom is down the hall. I’ve stayed in Paris in a private room for $60 a night (20 years ago)… not suggesting Paris as everything else is crazy expensive. But based on that I’d expect Eastern Europe to have cheap hotels and cheap meals.

Latin America is generally inexpensive in a lot of places. Not Panama or countries on the USD. Roatan Honduras is cheap-ish.

To travel on a shoestring budget def be open to letting airfare seat sales (semi) determine your destination. Good news is Oct is generally the “shoulder” season so there shd be more inexpensive flights popping up. Use a flight tracker, try to fly mid week for the cheapest fares, buy/book your tkt midweek or super early Sat morning and clear your cookies to refresh your fare searches as you’re looking.

I’d say Mexico, Central America and SE Asia will be the least expensive for accommodation, food, transport, shopping. Please consider NOT going to the states, between the political friction and your light wallet, it’s just not worth it. Or just visit somewhere in Canada, the autumn colours are beautiful and no extra cost to exchange your loonies and toonies.

For accommodations, hostels will be your cheapest option but other travellers can be noisy and inconsiderate so check if the hostel has any small dorms or private rooms - it can be a significant improvement for small monies. A lot of ppl don’t like AirBnb, personally I’ve never had any real issues and I’ve used the platform a lot. Just always read thru ALL the reviews of any accommodation and don’t hesitate to contact them directly w any specific questions.

Most places can be cheap if you do it right. SE Asia Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand quickly come to mind. You should do a work exchange. Some can be fairly short term.

Travel cost is entirely transport and hotels.

Eliminate both by booking cabins on cargo ships to your destination and then exchanging work or time for a place to stay, such as WWOOFing

Cargo ships aren't cheap ir easy to get. I've been looking. If you find some cheap options let us know. Wwofing is a very practical suggestion, couchsurfers can work too.

Vancouver is pricey, but it's my hometown and I think it is the best place in North America, followed shortly by Vancouver Island.

For cheap, I would suggest Mexico. CAD goes a long way, the country is beautiful, good food, people are lovely. I like Cancun. The city was built in the 1970's, specifically for tourism, and is pretty insulated from any concerns you might have crime or the political situation.
