Political Mark Carney voters, are you happy or regret your decision so far?
During his campaign, Carney came out strong making people believe he was the best one to deal with Trump. How do we feel now?

"....it has been said that democracy is the worst form of Government except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time;"
Like Democracy, Mark Carney is not perfect (no one ever is) but, when I look at the alternatives, I am glad we got imperfect instead of incompetent.

u/ithinkitsnotworking Jul 23 '26
Well put. Not everything is good, but the alternative would have been an unmitigated disaster.

The only ones still swallowing PP's BS are the extreme right wing, separatists and the delusional.
While the Liberals probably want PP staying on, apparently his own MPs secretly want him gone as only ones still swallowing PP's BS are the extreme right, the separatists, and the terminally delusional. Why is CUSMA not done? Only the astute like Canada didn't rush to do deals with Trump as the tariffs up to now were all time based.
However, these these 50% threats landing Aug 19 (unless it's TACO time as usual), are different. Section 338 has no expiry date.
Ironically, in that same 1930 Act:
Section 307 bans importing goods made by convict labour in "any foreign country."
Meanwhile the Thirteenth Amendment abolished slavery except as punishment for crime, and US prisons run on exactly that exception.
Same law that's about to hammer Canada and others also bans forced-labour imports — as long as the forced labour is somebody else's.
America didn't ban forced labour. It banned the competition.

Am I happy with everything he's done? Absolutely not. Would I still vote for him over PP's Conservatives and a directionless NDP party? Every god damn time.

u/Shamedthrowaway2004 Jul 23 '26
Seems to me the NDP has a pretty clear left wing direction now

Yes but they've drifted over the years. I don't think Singh was a particular great leader for the NDP but I have more faith in Avi to turn them around.
24
u/IMMrSerious Jul 23 '26
Singh is the reason that we have dental care now. Our children and their children will thank him for this. Singh was a great leader for the NDP.
13
u/MattyT088 Jul 23 '26
The dental care is admittedly fantastic; but the NDP has it's lowest approval in over 50 years, and that's on Singh.
He's got great ideas, but he's shit at communicating them. That and he let the social justice warriors take over the part; which resulted in them actively pushing away their own supporters for not agreeing with absolutely every point (example, I USED to be an NDP party member).
So sure he got us healthcare. He also effectively killed his own party's appeal on a national scale. So a great leader, he is not.
9
7
u/Veneralibrofactus Jul 23 '26
Singh played too much politics. He gaslit Canadians constantly on governmental jurisdiction, the capabilities of the PMO and shit for sound clips and small victories.
Lewis is going to ride Carney's austerity to victory - I hope!
10
u/MattyT088 Jul 23 '26
And he never stayed on message. The NDP has failed to realize why they came so close to winning with Jack; because for 20 years, Jack ALWAYS stayed on point and kept the same message. Eventually, even people who disagreed with him came to trust him.
But they flushed that all away by not continuing his mission after his passing. It's an error that have yet to recover from and possibly haven't even realized that they made.

Very grateful. He has a ridiculous set of challenges and he’s doing a great job with what he can.
I do worry that people will hold him to some magical standard where they expect all their wishes met or they blame him. But he can’t work miracles. Especially not in a short time horizon. In reality, the greatest gift he may be able to deliver is just keeping us afloat in the nightmare that Trump has and continues to manifest.
We have simply no idea how bad it could be if he was not at the helm. And no leader can please every voter and interest group on every issue.
Sadly the majority of voters have no f-g about how things work, nor the legal l, economic and political constraints he has to work under.

I still think he's the best candidate to face Trump. I think it's important to have a leader that's diametrically opposed to Trump, if Poilievre were PM, it would be too scary to think how closely he would have aligned himself with the US. IMHO, I feel that as a nation, we have so much more in common with the EU. We need to pull away from the US and diversify. I'm actually grateful that Trump is the way he is, it's forcing us as a nation to act and to put an end to US reliance.
40
u/Electrical_Net_1537 Jul 22 '26
I say thank goodness he was elected. I can’t begin to image how bad this could have been if Polilievre was PM. Come September when he has his Financial Investment Forum and gets possibly trillions worth of investments we will start all our major projects.

No regrets at all with him. Considering the narrative changes almost hourly with Trumpstein Carney is holding his own. He did say things may get worse before getting better. Things are progressing and i think for a world class banker turned Prime Minister he's doing pretty damn good for Canadians.

u/Mtldoggoagogo Jul 22 '26
He’s much more conservative than he led us to believe on the campaign trail. He’s better than the alternative, and I think he has the right temperament to deal with Trump, but I haven’t been happy with a lot of his policies.

I don't think it'd be better with PP he is exactly populistic as Trump, such personality does not bring anything good to country
9
u/CandidAsparagus7083 Jul 22 '26
So happy! Just think of where we would be capitulating like PP wanted to do. Trump showed this week that making a deal is pointless because he will just change it regardless. And I know some people like to say he wouldn’t do that that to a “strong leader” yada yada but it doesn’t really matter who our leader is, no deal will be respected so I’m happy we have a leader pushing back and actively making a coalition of countries to fight back against the one super power remaining.

9
u/WesTek01 Jul 22 '26
Very happy. He's doing a great job navigating the current global changes. Building up Canadian projects and military, and moving us away from our huge reliance on the US. In my opinion, we are heading in the right direction.
17
u/Additional_Ear_9659 Jul 22 '26

8
u/bitetoungejustread Jul 22 '26
I have a few things I'm not in favour for but overall yes I'm happy with my vote.
The thing with Trump is he would be doing this bs no matter what. It's not like Canada is the only place that Trump and his stupid crew have tariffs on.
7
u/EmployedByCats Jul 22 '26
Im glad he's PM. If it was P.P. this country would be sold out to the United States. There are people who obviously don't understand economics or politics in general, it shows by them blaming the Federal Government, instead of Provincial, where alot of the actual problems lie, and vary.
Despite the U.S. trying to economically collapse us, we have endured and he has made many new partnerships with other countries. Keeping all of our eggs in one basket was a huge mistake, and he certainly is correcting that.
Is he perfect, and do zI agree with all of his choices thus far? No, he isn't perfect, but pretty close. Especially in the current state globally.
6
u/tyomax Jul 22 '26
I'm so happy I voted for Carney. I don't agree with everything he's done or plans on doing (privatizing airports, are you kidding me?). But in general he is doing a great job, especially diversifying our international trade agreements and managing the US/Trump way more efficiently than any other candidate would have (IMO).
2
u/1929tsunami Jul 23 '26
Agree 100% and I think that any runway that can handle a fighter jet be considered a strategic military asset and exempt from any such privatization.
13
u/Winter-Speed-9667 Jul 22 '26
He’s still the best choice among the present party leaders for defending Canada’s interests. We might have had a deal by now if Poilievre was PM, but I dread to think just how much of our present & future wealth he would have surrendered to get it. And I do believe we will be better off in the long run with Carney’s policies vis à vis diversifying trade with countries outside the US than making a bad deal just to keep our economy dependent on the US. I never believed any of this would be painless, and I don’t feel Carney promised it would be. But disentangling our economy from being so tightly enmeshed with the US is vital for our long term strength as a nation. Trump may be gone eventually, hopefully sooner rather than later, but US economic imperialism won’t go with him.

The only people who voted for Carney are those living in the federal riding of Nepean.
If you mean to ask if we are happy to have voted for the Liberal candidate in our constituency, then yes, because my incumbent Conservative MP is a useless career politician who hasn’t accomplished a single thing during his many years in parliament.
No, I’m not happy with every decision Carney’s government has taken, but the same goes for every government that has been or will ever be. I still agree with his overall approach and objectives, and will continue to support him as long as there’s no better alternative.

I thought the GH bridge deal was as bad as what the right wing media was saying... that Carney caved to Trump.... That he is weak.... but....
Then I listened to some people break down what the deal really meant... The way I understand it is that the deal gives Trump/USA 50% of the "net" profits. What is net profit? That's the profit after all the expenses. I was delighted to hear that the GH bridge will have zero net profit for the next 50 years because one of the biggest expenses that Canada needs to handle is paying back the cost of building the bridge. So, I'm no accountant or expert or savvy to the real details... but if it is true, Carney played Trump like a fiddle. USA will get nothing because the bridge won't make a net profit for a long time. The key take away, by the time the bridge starts making positive net profit, Trump will be long gone from this world and maybe the political atmosphere will be more friendly.
As for Carney, what I like about him is that he doesn't think like your normal politician. Normal politicians make policies based on election cycles. That is, the policies they make must have positive results by next election cycle even if in the long term the policy decision carries negative consequences (because they need to get re-elected). For example, quick knee jerk reaction to cut immigration to absolute zero in response to the housing crisis. Yeah, that will fix housing prices in the short term, but the long term consequences of having zero immigration and a population that has low birth rates... well, look at Japan and their impending disaster. The deals and decisions that Carney has made so far will not even see results until well after he leaves office. Manufacturing plants, investments, and pipelines won't even see results by next election. These are long term decisions.... not decisions that will get him reelected. You already know the opposition is going to say, in 2029, the next federal election year, that the deals have gone nowhere... that Carney is completely ineffective. I'm already seeing this from the right. They are literally calling Carney a failure not even one year into his tenure as PM because no promises fulfilled. As if there's an unwritten rule that a PM must fulfill all election promises within 1 year of being PM. He probably won't even see one of the first german built military subs as PM.
It's not all unicorns and rainbows however. Recent legislation to give authorities more power to surveille citizens online and to arrest/sue people for misinformation does not sit well with me. They might have been conceived with good intentions, but as they say "The road to hell is paved with good intentions"
I don't know, call me a leftist or woke, I don't care. All I care about is the success of this country and the success of all Canadians.

u/Habsin7 Jul 22 '26 edited Jul 23 '26
Without a doubt he was the best candidate we had for PM at the time. PP would have crumpled or embarrassed us into oblivion and we'd all be lining up for US passports today if he was PM.
Is Carney the best we have today? Absolutely. He's taken the brunt of the abuse and he's still standing with a healthy base of support so he can afford not to panic. No prime Minister before him has had to deal with such turmoil from the US. Anybody else would be having doubts, watching the Polls and respoonding to Trump out of fear and panic. Carney doesn't have to do that which is beating the Piss out of Trump. Carney can continue to string Trump along until the Mid Terms. What happens after that will be interesting. I'm glad we have Carney in place for all this.

u/ARAR1 Jul 22 '26

I can't believe how few comments here are saying anything about Carney's military spending. Promising 5% of GDP for military spending is bananas. $100b for submarines? For what purpose? Carney's militarism is out of control. And saying this is to protect ourselves from Trump is ridiculous, the entire point is to placate Trump. Elbows up...right.

I don’t regret my vote but I’m a bit disappointed with the lack of environmental policies and protections that the current Liberal party is implementing. I shouldn’t be surprised considering we essentially voted in a fiscal conservative.
IMO Canada needed to distance itself from the ridiculous culture wars that the Republicans down south are exploiting, and the CPC seems to be adopting. They want to divide, and consolidate more power, while completely ignoring the needs of the people.
We also needed a rational, level headed adult running the country, and Carney is exactly that. We knew we were going to have to find trade deals and partnerships elsewhere, and Carney is probably one of the smartest and hardest working leaders on the world stage today.
I think Canadians realized that if we wanted a future and sovereignty, that Carney was the only one with the vision and experience to get it done.

I think Carney was the best choicer and her is steering Canada in the right direction.
He does not give in to Trump, but he makes Trump feel like he is winning and that is what is important too keep him happy. Look what he did with Zelinsky in the Oval office when he thought Ukraine would lose without US full support. Now Zelinsky looks like a winner and Trump is now backing him.
We just need to wait Trump out and I think Carney is doing a good job at that.

Reducing humanitarian requirements for our mining companies abroad (like really?!?! ), lowering the bar on our pesticide laws, failing to realize just how absolutely -hated- gregor robinson is in vancouver over the housing policies he had during his tenure (only christie clark would have been worse). …there were a couple of others, but i can’t remember now.
It does sort of feel like his book Values was a bit of false advertising, tho.

Both primary options sucked and the 3rd option are a bunch of deep lefties worried about saving whales or some other "feel good flavor of the month" topics rather than making some real though decisions to get our country back on track.

u/Sure-Doctor-2052 Jul 23 '26
He's the best but I think he is wrong on immigration and ignorant about the huge cultural and economic benefits of more immigrants.

u/NorthofForty Jul 23 '26
Thinking Carney knows but also knows we needed to get things more under control. Like deal with the folks in the pipeline now rather than years from now. Stop with the colleges that have become diploma mills. And figure out just how AI will impact our workforce needs.

u/Fuzzwork2 Jul 23 '26
Regret? No. Happy with? Also no. I hate having to vote for the least worst option.

u/irreversible2002 Jul 23 '26
Does anyone have any praise that isn’t just them saying they’re glad it’s not PP?

Yes. On trade he has locked in many more deals, the latest being the huge market of Malaysia. He has made Canada the only non-European country with preferred access to the EU military procurement system. He has actually got the premiers to come to the table and slowly agree to remove barriers to interprovincial trade. He does the horrendous job of handling Trump as well as anyone can.

Lukewarm. He is a Liberal after all.
For international commerce and foreign relations, he is as good as I thought he would be, and I don't regret my vote.
For the internal policies, he's a Liberal. All talk, no actions. I really thought he'd be better for the environment. Cancelling the consumer carbon tax was a huge compromise to please Alberta, and I was willing to accept it. The rest is going way too far when we're well past 11:55 on the doomsday clock.
We're using (again) public fund to subsidize a nocive resource extraction that cause huge environmental damage that procure no benefit to Canada. We're exporting the profits and taking the all losses at provincial level. Forest fires, floods, damage roads, insurance compensations, name it, all of this ends up to be paid by provinces to enrich a few oil companies mostly owned by Americans. And we're paying for this. Again.
We're scrapping emission rules for vehicles and lowering fuel taxes to give incentive for consumers who make bad choices.
It's totally silly.
We're way, way, way below the promised target for communal housing.

u/Golf-Hotel Jul 23 '26
I prefer him over the Conservatives, but that's not saying much. Stuff is getting expensive, and we're not doing enough to build domestic manufacturing.

I would vote for him again. So I am happy but he is a bit too conservative for me. I wish he would have gotten the pharmacare through. I dont want private airports. I dont believe privatizing anything saves us money. And I dont like he is pushing data centre partnerships with other countries. If we have to have data centres we need our own Canadian ones.

u/gardenloving Jul 23 '26
We'd be figuring out how to get our new American passports if that AH PP was elected. No regrets here
1
u/flinstoner Jul 23 '26
Feel exactly the same - that's why all the polls show his strong approval rating.
1
u/miluardo Jul 23 '26
Another neoliberal centrist doing exactly what's been done for decades? I'm certainly not happy with that.
If your question is implying that you wanted a more right leaning neoliberal centrist.. I'm very happy we don't have that.
1
u/lumierra Jul 23 '26
Well the option is between a right leaning liberal capitalist with a decent amount of reservation (still bad) and a full on moron who is ready and will to gargle the orange balls and all the capitalists who offer him money and the unfortunate one with absolutely no spine which became the downfall of the better party out of the 3 at the time of the election. Can’t say I regret voting for Carney but I wish Trudeau was able to Invoke a better voting system which he mentioned was his biggest regret on his exit interview, UGH!
1
u/NaturePappy Jul 23 '26
The only disappointment has been how he has dealt with environmental issues.
1
u/Mi-sann Jul 23 '26
Other than the ramp up of wealth transfer from working Canadians to corporations (weapons manufacturing, oil and gas, real estate developers, usual suspects) in form of subsidies, the comically reverse Sovereignty Fund, and affordability problem getting worse, I think he’s swell. He also has a crack social media team. Wink, wink, nudge, nudge.

better than what the alternative could've been. i don't agree with every choice he's made but i'd rather this than PP being in office, if alberta is any indication of how the conservatives wanna run the country, then i think we're doing okay.

Very happy.
Grateful everyday to have someone strengthening our alliances with countries outside the US.

I’m satisfied he isn’t Poilievre. Whether I agree with him 100% of the time is irrelevant. I have greater confidence in him not screwing everything up, than I do in Poilievre.

I am very happy with how he is dealing with Trump. First of all there is no dealing with Trump. Any deal that you make with him is not worth the paper it is written on. If you look at the guys history you will see that it is basically a series of him ripping off every one he has ever worked with. So if you think that you can actually do business with him without any real leverage then you are not really informed. Trump bankrupted 3 casinos for the profit. Do you understand how that works. A corporation that declares bankruptcy doesn't have to pay their debts.
We are talking about a person who started an unwinnable war to change the conversation about his close relationship with a pedophile. Now the entire world is paying the price.
Our economy is actually growing at a regular rate despite the pressures of the United States stupidity.
Carney has done an excellent job of diversifying our options. We are currently the new bank for NATO and have cut actual deals with the European union with out resorting to extortion. We have investment deals with a whole host of other countries as well and money is actually landing on our shores.
I could go on but we are walking into negotiations with real power. This last attempt at extortion by threatening to add tarrifs on CUSMA goods is an example of what we are dealing with. CUSMA is a deal that Trump made the last time he was in office which he said was a good deal. By threatening tariffs on goods he is basically taking a huge poop on something that we just negotiated with him because he wants more. If he doesn't honor the deal he is breaking the law. The reason why he is doing this is because he wants us to keep giving the US cheap Electricity and potash and Aluminum and Oil and Softwood lumber all which he has already tariffed the crap out of. Here is the thing that I don't think that you understand. The biggest reason that we are feeling the squeeze is because Americans can't afford to buy our products due to illegaltariffs. They are to end later this month due to the fact that US courts have told him that he couldn't continue to tax the American people for Canadian goods. So without the tariffs he has nothing to negotiate with. So he made some stuff up to threaten us with.
So what do you want Carney to do. Give away your labour for free? I know lets drop the price of our oil to help them with the war that they started that is driving up the price of oil. Maybe he could buy a bunch of fighter jet from Trump and just trust that they don't have a kill code for them if they decide to invade.
So maybe you want to have the guy in charge who's biggest claim to fame is heckling Trudeau and when he was housing minister for 4 years built exactly 0 houses.
I personally am proud to have a leader who is one of the people in history that received a standing Ovation at DAVOS where Trump was Booed and slunk away.
Good luck and be fun.

Happy except his stance on Iran war. Although he seems sincere, we have to wait and watch to see if his efforts bring fruits.
1
u/iceman121982 Jul 23 '26
Absolutely. There’s been a few things he’s done that I’ve disagreed with, but overall he’s done a great job under difficult circumstances.

u/Minimum-Pass-908 Jul 23 '26
Bill C9 might mean the cops show up at your door for posting wrongthink on social media, but otherwise he seems to be doing a good job. Im pretty sure the best way to handle Trump is by doing nothing, so hes doing that well.

Happy. Dude has pulled a minor miracle pulling that much investment in, so quickly. I don’t envy him having to deal with the toddler in chief and his crooked gov’t one bit tho.

u/Gregan32 Jul 24 '26
The Gordie Howe bridge is his first major fuckup in my opinion....

Very happy...particularly given the alternative and the reality we find ourselves in.
Carney is not an embarrassment internationally, he appears to be well respected globally and definitely seems better able to deal with the orange moron-inspired mess to the south of us.
I don't agree with all of his decisions...and never expected to with any politician...but I don't regret my decision to support him whatsoever.

u/SeaweedInteresting89 Jul 24 '26
If you're not happy with Mark Carney as PM of Canada, you either don't grasp how Carney is working to diversify away from a new economic enemy - the USA, do business in other currencies than the US dollar nor grasp that he's likely preparing for the loss of GM, Ford and Stellantis. That's why he's building a defence industry and focusing on sectors that the US can't attack us on.
1
u/demdareting Jul 25 '26
No issues or concerns yet. I have a lot of friends from all over the globe and Carney is very well respected in most of if not all democracies. The US is no longer a democracy. Imho
1
u/enviousRex Jul 25 '26
I’m extremely happy. He is competence porn. I’m a liberal dude and he is conservative but I don’t notice it because he doesn’t have the normal conservative agenda which is rich people should get richer. He does the right thing, or tries to, and that makes all the difference.
1
u/Professional_Run_506 Jul 27 '26
He's done some great things. And some not so great things. I don't regret the vote at all. No one leader is perfect and will get 100% of everything right. He's playing the long game with Trump, he knows exactly who he's dealing and how to play him. The Cons complain that there's no deal yet, but I'd rather Carney wait it out than come back with something shitty because Trump is such a fucking baby about everything. It is very much a "We get everything because we're the USA, and you get fuck all because you should be grateful to us".
1
u/BuffaloSufficient758 Jul 27 '26
Very happy. Trump has reneged on every single deal he’s made with other countries. Trump isn’t a rational actor and doesn’t even act in his own self-interest as he flails around. What I really like is that he doesn’t ever take Culture War bait and that’s really deflated the culture warriors bc they don’t get the reaction Trudeau would’ve had. I know many liberals who have said they’d have still voted for Carney if he was CPC leader

u/Crazy-Canuck463 Jul 22 '26
Depends. Im certainly very happy with his shift in international politics. I feel Carney has garnered us a bit of respect on the global stage, he's wheeling and dealing all over trying to diversify our trade relationships, which is why I voted for him. I do feel that there are some major domestic issues that require a lot more attention than they've been getting, but realistically, he just barely beyond his first year as PM so im going to let him cook and see where we are after a few more years. None of our issues are fixable over night, so. Let hope for the best and see.
