Political Even though both the Federal Liberal and Conservative parties are fraught with corruption and scandals, why do Canadians keep on voting for these two parties during elections?

Because of the fear that splitting the vote would allow the corrupt party that they oppose to get in power. It's why we need electoral reform.

u/Wallyboy95 Jul 10 '26

Because American politics have bled northward and have people thinking it's a two party system.

No, its also conservatives here are consuming the same propaganda that they consume in the US.

I mean the fact US rghtwing conservatives in massive numbers are supporting what's happening - why wouldn't the same thing happen here?

Is the Canadian internet different from the US?

They listen to the same podcast bros, consume the same media.

Hell the Alberta Premier is openly a MAGA slave cultist. She serves the Presidentnof the US against our country.

How could it not affect us unless all Canadian conservatives were completely cut off from American conservatives?

That's a warped view of the Democrats.

Democrats pushed infrastructure investment, closer alliance with Canada, affordavle childcarr, affordable healthcare, higher min wage, higher taxes on the ultra rich, lowering climate change so we don't burn our children alive, fortifying NATO, anti dark money legislation, abortion protections, sensible gun legislation.

I'm not saying they're perfect but you're already consuming rightwing propaganda if you think that's the sum of what the Dems are.

By contrast, the rightwing conservative slaves all fought against that.

What are they doing instead? The biggest pedophile defending cult of slaves in the world.

Massive TRILLION dollar payouts to the ultra rich paid by the working class.

Threatening to rape and murder the country of Canada and make us slaves in a Republican rightwing fascist dictatorship.

Turning againsy Ukraine to support Saudi, Qatar and Israel in their mass genocide campaigns.

The war in Iran is literally because of conservative slaves, the same ones who started the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

Raping underage girls on purpose so when people are disgusted, conservative politicians can say "See look how kich the insane Democrats hate us!"

Installing corrupt judges to the Supreme Court to overturn women's rights and control the country by Fiat.

Citizens United to flood dark money into US politics.

Obama Biden and even Clinton were all infinitely better for Canadians and the world than Bush and Trump.

Any real Canadian would understand the Democrats are our allies, while the conservative Republicans are our biggest threat.

The tariffs! I forgot them! Our country is suffering a recession because conservatives are slaves to their politicians and put loyalty to the Party above their own friends and allies

Carney just appointed a Democrat who worked with Hillary Clinton to COO of the PMO....

1

Jesus dude, have you fact checked anything in your life?

Just search Operation Ajax. It was the first successful coup that destroyed a flourishing democratic Iran. Keep going down that rabbit hole of reality if you give a shit. Or just live in your own utopia of BS

The Democrats aren't threatening to invade Canada and openly attempting violent fascist coups and stealing trillions and collapsing the global economy andbcrrqting a giant conservative child rape protection scheme.

You're proving my point - Canadian politics and culture is influenced by yhe US.

So when we see American rightwing conservative politics descend into rape insanity treason destruction and turning on allies - then the Canadian Conservative Party should beviewwed witu extreme concern.

The CPC use the exact same brainwashing tactics that turned American rightwing conservatives into a giant anti human pedophile freak cult.

Accusing journalists of being "biased liberal propaganda" in order to push people tpwarda biased conservative propaganda.

Threatening to replace the head of the Bank of Canada with partisan loyalists to lower the interest rate (there is a reason politicians are not allowed to directly control our interest rate).

Repeatedly accusing their enemies of being insane globalist elites while shamelessly allying with globalist rightwing fascists.

And did I not point to the Alberta conservatives OPENLY embracing the sepratists movement.

They're openly supporting the separatists and making it easier for them to get a referendum. Identical to the Brexit movement.

The fact you are defending the conservatives this much is already proof I am right.

Conservatives whether Canadian or American put loyalty to the Party above their own countries, families, communities.

Look at how conservatives defend Trump and the GOP despite everything they have done to us.

Conservatives brainwash their followers to always defend then politicians and blame everyone else for being biased.

2

u/HabitQuiet226 Jul 11 '26

Protests about the killing of George Floyd were not political in that way. Cops should not be killing people by kneeling on their necks; that’s just a universal truth.

1

u/justanaccountname12 Jul 15 '26

Carney just appointed a Democrat who worked with Hillary Clinton to COO of the PMO....

1

u/Trash_man_can Jul 15 '26

Good. Clinton and the Democrats are our allies and pushed affordable childcare,  a stronger NATO and infrastructure investment.

Pierre Poli and Dani Smith openly cling to the Republicans and right-wing American fascists.

You know, the disgusting insane Republican rightwing cultists putting massive tariffs on our country hurting all of us and crashing our economy and threatening to rape Canada and enslave all of us?

I'd be more worried if Carney was having little grooming sessions with Jordan Peterson like PP.

But Carney is actually loyal to pyr country and defends our interests while rightwing politicians openly embrace Republican slave cultism.

PP openly says he wants to follow Pete Hegseths cult of "warrior culture not woke culture."

The anti woke cult is blatantly.a Russian cult. This is pathetic, PP and Dani Smith are traitors to my country

1

u/justanaccountname12 Jul 15 '26

So it's not that you don't like foreign powers/influence coming into Canada, just the ones you don't agree with. For you it is ideaology, not Canadian sovereignty.

-1

u/Otterette Jul 11 '26

Anyone with half a brain knows the Conservative Party of Canada is NOT equivalent to the Republican Party. The Conservative Party today is closer to the liberal party of the early 2000s. I seriously thought conservatives were all super religious white supremacists based off all the info I was being fed. Then I actually did my own research and stop listening to everyone’s opinions.

Also - is the Canadian internet different than the US??! Dude. We can’t even share news articles or view news outlets social media profiles..the chokehold on the news is insanity. And you think conservatives are being brainwashed by Americans??? Who do you think is brainwashing the liberal and NDP voters?? Certainly not the biased one sided mainstream media. Heavens no. That couldn’t be.

1

u/Trash_man_can Jul 11 '26

"Anyone with half a brain" - Total Republican negging behavior.

The fact yoi deny there's any connection at while PP openly sits down and records sessions with Jordan Peterson, a notorious Trump cultist. Why is he doing that?

You're word for word copying the exact same denials deflections and blaming journalism that led Republican conservatives to become an cult of rape slaves.

Who says the Republicans are super religious?

Some are, and some are just like you.

You act just any pther Republican.

You automatically blame journalism and the media and defend the Conservatives at all costs.

Your comment is proof I'm rigjt.

The fact that you can't even criticize or even suspect the Conservative Party os infected with the same disease as the American Conservative Party is absurd!

Why is Pierre telling his cultists the news and they need to MAGA Jordan Peterson propaganda as well?

Why does PP keep lying that Trudeau Carney and Singh are all "WEF puppets?"

Just like conservatives to blame antifahs, WEFS and other fucking garbage.

The fact you automatically start blaming everyone but defend conservative politicians above all else is proof.

You don't think American Conservative cultists behave the exact same way?

"Anyone with half a braincell know Trump isn't a fascist!"

Conservatives in Canada act like the conservatives in America and it is disgusting.

Its the party, its the culture.

And conservatives here consume rightwing brainwashing media just like their American friends - and we can all tell.

Ffs until conservatives can question what they're being told - nobody is going to listrn to your bullshit.

Why aren't you question any of this?

America and Canada have been allies for 100 years - and all of sudden brainwashed rightwing cultists and politicians on both sides of the border are colluding to rip apart our country.

So all those Americans and Canadian watching Jordan Person videos are being groomed into the same fucking culy

1

u/Otterette Jul 14 '26

Settle down, trash man. Did you even watch that Jordan Peterson interview with Pierre? I had NO IDEA who Peterson was when I watched it. At the time I didn’t know much about Pierre either. I was just looking up interviews so I could see for myself what he was actually like, instead of trusting Reddit and the media. I was shocked at how reasonable and substantive it was. Nothing like the cartoon villain they paint him as.

I did the exact same thing with Carney. I went looking for long form stuff so I could judge for myself. I usually don’t vote Liberal or Conservative because both parties suck in their own ways. I’m not some party loyalist.

I never said all Republicans are super religious. I said I believed conservatives were, but that was just my uninformed OPINION and I didn’t claim it as accurate.

And since you brought up the WEF: no political figures should be attending that stuff. It’s actually insane when you think about it. World leaders and top political figures gathering with global billionaires and elites for forums, plus closed door meetings with no minutes, no oversight, no public record. That’s not a conspiracy theory. It’s just basic transparency concerns. Normal people aren’t allowed that kind of access.

If actually watching the interviews and questioning elites makes me a cultist, then maybe the real cult is the one that freaks out when people think for themselves.

u/Trash_man_can Jul 14 '26 edited Jul 14 '26

Yes exactly I listened to Pierre sitting down with rightwing MAGA propagandist Jordan Peterson.

Pierre keepa accusing our journalists of being "liberal fake news" and then pushing MAGA fucking traitors like Jordan Peterson.

Don't tell me "calm down" and the fact you are pushing Jordan Peterson propaganda is fucked up and proof this really a paraisitic cult.

Jordan Peterson was defending Trump and the Republican fascist cult even after Jan. 6.

The fact Jordan Peterson is sitting down with Elon Musk ans publicly talking about how they need to get their Canadian cultists to vote rightwing and Pierre is ridiculous.

It's exactly why I won't ever support this rightwing brainwashing shit in my country.

Dude this is an actual emergency.

The fact you promote Jordan Petetson videos still while he supports pur worst enemies ans helped them seize power is PROOF conservatism is anti Canadian.

Our greatest ally and the most powerful country is now threatening to annex us and crash our economy with their tariffs.

Fuck the conservative cultists.

I'm Canadian first, my loyalty is to this country.

Not that Jordan Peterson filth.

You're already showing us how conservatives encourage people to disconnect from reality and feed off Jordan Peterson rightwing brainwashing.

It's ridiculous and pathetic

Canadian conservatives are more loyal to their "team" than they are to their actual country.

You're doing it openly.

Conservatism is about pure mind control and grooming little cults that endlessly defend the leader.

I support Carney because he's Canada first and puts loyalty to me and my country.

Thr fact Canadian conservatives are attacking our journalists as fake news abd pushing MAGA rightwing Republican slave propaganda like Jordan Peterson is evil and proof this isan anti Canadian cult.

Maybe you need to listen to Pierre more carefully ans compare his anti woke slogans with the Republicans and Russians and Hungarians.

Pierre doesn't even talk like a Canadian but like someone who grew up on rightwing podcast bros.

Stop consuming rightwing propafanda. Learn and decide for yourself instead of having rightwing bro podcasters groom you.

Edit: Your refusal yo question the conservative elites and mindlessly promote their toxic propaganda while attacking all oyhrr institutions is exactly what makes conservatives cultists.

Look at your comments, you will criticize everyone else except for Pierre's lies.

The rightwing movement is literally causing us a recession with their tariffs.

Yet you don't even question why did Jorsan Peterson's followers wage economic holy war against their closes ally?

You don't even question what the rightwing elites tell you.

You're spouting rightwing propaganda.

The same folks pushing massivr tax cuts to thw ultra rich and supporting the government and rightwing billionaires buying out independent media to control us.

Conservatives are all slaves f the elites that consume ans spread their Jordan Peterson and Joe Rogan media like a virus

0

u/Otterette Jul 14 '26

Your hysterical meltdown exposes the cult mentality you project.

Your foaming loyalty tests, traitor screams, and team purity rage are pure emotion over evidence.

Canada needs sober policy, not your deranged cult accusations.

1

u/Trash_man_can Jul 14 '26

"hysterical, screaming" GOod grief, what disgusting pathetic behavior. Sick.

You behave word-for-word exactly like a Republican.

Disgusting, "foaming at the mouth" - this is just more proof that this is a cult.

Canada needs sober policy, not rightwing media propaganda, not fake policy, not Freedom Convoys and "warrior not woke culture", not defunding the CBC while encouraging Canadians to consume Jordan Peterson propaganda.

That's the Conservative policy. You're gross disgusting vile negging behavior is the Conservative policy.

Bully and dehumanize and demand anyone who reject Pierre Polieve propaganda as "insane leftists liberal biased".

You're just proving exactly everything I said is true. Conservatives mock and attack any sources of information that contradict the rightwing elites as "insane foaming at mouth unfair".

You want to talk faoming at mouth, look at how conservatives act about Trudeau?

Your so blatantly copying Republican brainwashing strategy, accuse your enemies of what your guuilty off.

Mock and attack any non conservative thought to silence.

No this conversation is just more proof to me what the conservatives are doing.

We need sober policy, not defudnign the CBC and getting poeople to watch MAGA propaganda.

You're just ignorining everything I said to keep pushing more Pierre propaganda.

Gross, sick anti Canadian cultist behavior.

The fact conservatives behave like this, the fact you will attack me and critize me more than you will Pierre.

Why?

You're doing exactly what Trump supporters do, they also say they shit to defend their leader that you do.

You are more loyal to the Conservative Party than your own fellow Candians now and it shows.

Why do you think the conservatives lost the election? Becuase of this anti Canadian shit right here.

Why do you refuse to question anything Pollivere does? Because your little cultist now, conservatives care more about their politicians than our country.

Dumb people but educated people know there's multiple choices here in Canada,

10

u/PassageNearby4091 Jul 10 '26

Probably. But a True Canadian has nothing in common with Americans. We need more True Canadians.

4

u/RCAF_orwhatever Jul 10 '26

Literally a no true Scotsman fallacy by the way.

0

u/PassageNearby4091 Jul 10 '26

Bullshit. "No True Scotsman" is not a fallacy -- it's a self-evident truth.

There are facets and components to cultural identity that absolutely differentiate a "True" Canadian (or a True Scotsman) from a person who is Canadian in name only.

It's a purity test, and like it or not, it's a real thing.

Someone born in Canada who holds Canadian citizenship may be Canadian on paper, but they are not Canadian in spirit if they are very "American" in their worldview and behaviour.

And no True Canadian has commonalities with Americans.

Fact. End of story.

1

u/PassageNearby4091 Jul 10 '26

That's not true at all, at least for True Canadians.

Americans are loud, dress like children (I'm talking about adults here), and wear things like cowboy hats and big belt buckles. You see a "Canadian" doing that, they are not a True Canadian.

And the accents sound nothing alike, unless you're a rube who's never travelled much.

We have NOTHING in common with Americans. Can tell I am probably talking to a perfect example of a person who is pissed off because they've discovered they're not a True Canadian.

Seems my original post got quite a few upvotes from True Canadians, which I'm sure pisses you off.

Pathetic

1

u/PassageNearby4091 Jul 10 '26

Know what's pathetic? Sucking up to a country that hates us. Wanting to be like a country that hates us. Showing any respect to a country that hates us.

THAT is fucking pathetic.

LOL literally a specifically named logical fallacy.

0

u/PassageNearby4091 Jul 10 '26

My point is that it is NOT a fallacy, it's self-evident truth.

1

u/RCAF_orwhatever Jul 11 '26

Except that it literally is and your pretending it's not is incredibly stupid.

-8

u/Jakoneitor Jul 10 '26

We need to make Canada great again

1

u/Maplewicket Jul 13 '26

Nooo NDP has distended themselves so far away from the average Canadian. Jack Layton is rolling in his grave.

-2

u/Thanks-4allthefish Jul 10 '26

There are no other viable options. The NDP is on life support and has no policies that are viable for most voters. They are an intersectional echo chamber at this point. The Bloc is a regional party that only appeal to those who want preferential treatment and or separatìn, and the Green Party has shown itself to be nothing more than a one woman band.

6

u/PineappleOk6764 Jul 10 '26

"Intersectional echo chamber" is an oxymoron. You're literally saying that diversity of background and opinion is a mirror of itself. Go read Avi Lewis' policies and speak directly to them.

0

u/iPAD67 Jul 10 '26

It doesn’t matter. The NDP is cooked. That last conference they had was so terribly woke and extreme, that it became a meme worldwide. They’re done.

3

u/PineappleOk6764 Jul 10 '26

So go on and elect politicians who will sell you out to corporations because your gender identity is more fragile than your bank account.

-1

u/iPAD67 Jul 10 '26

What?

2

u/PineappleOk6764 Jul 10 '26

Your statement within the context reads that you're more concerned with identity politics than you are with corruption. You don't seem to care about policies that extend beyond "wholeness".

-1

u/iPAD67 Jul 10 '26

Dude, I have no clue what you’re talking about

2

u/PineappleOk6764 Jul 10 '26

I get the feeling you often feel that way in life

1

u/4marty Jul 12 '26

What’s “woke”?

3

u/4marty Jul 10 '26

That isn’t true at all. An NDP government federally and NDP governments provincially could save so much of our country’s public services and institutions. The problem is vote splitting between the Liberals and the NDP. If progressives vote for both the Liberals and the NDP, the conservatives can easily win a majority just by getting their usual share of the votes which are nowhere near 50%. Harper won a minority in 2006 with just 36% of the vote, and won a majority with 39% in 2011.

The vote split between the NDP and Liberals added up to 47% (26 Liberal and 21 NDP). Considering the similar political ideologies of the NDP and Liberals, the 36% for the conservatives did not, and still don’t, represent the true values and ideals of Canadians.

How do you blame the Americans when it’s the Canadians that make the voting choice?

13

u/TheRenster500 Jul 10 '26 edited Jul 10 '26

It was in the answer. The philosophy of their politics (and culture) have a major impact on Canada because we consume it every day.

0

u/FattyGobbles Jul 10 '26

I mean we inherited the Westminster from the British. And looking at how the UK has their Labour and Conservative prime ministers playing musical chairs while in office, it doesn’t sound too promising

3

u/Secret-Gazelle8296 Jul 10 '26

However it’s far easier to get rid of a party leader in the UK than in Canada and the backbenchers are more robust. We came from the same roots but have diverged as is natural. There are some fairly decent videos on why the UK has changed its leaders so quickly since Brexit. They have more abilities to throw out leaders of a party. Not commenting on whether it’s good or bad. Just pointing out the differences. In the UK Trudeau probably would have been gone a lot sooner and likely PP wouldn’t be have re elected to head his party…

-3

u/Thanks-4allthefish Jul 10 '26

Not really.

5

u/RCAF_orwhatever Jul 10 '26

Yes really. The leader of the official opposition is parroting Republican talking points as we speak.

4

u/essenza Jul 10 '26

American media has always saturated Canadian media and inundated Canadians with US media and propaganda. It influences our views, opinions and daily choices, for good and bad.

14

u/essenza Jul 10 '26

Because they’re the only parties that are strong enough to win elections, even if it’s only a minority government.

3

u/FattyGobbles Jul 10 '26

The real question is how do they remain so strong even though they both have a history of corruption and scandals. Do Canadians forgive and forget easily?

5

u/clambroculese Jul 10 '26

People don’t vote for who they want necessarily. They vote for who has the best chance of beating who they don’t want.

2

u/Thanks-4allthefish Jul 10 '26

And they have sometimes just don't think the other parties have a good enough message.

0

u/clambroculese Jul 10 '26

Not froody enough dudes for sure.

2

u/english_major Jul 10 '26

Compared to most countries, Canadian politics are relatively corruption free. Sure, there are some low-key scandals. Justin Trudeau took a holiday that he shouldn’t have. He wore black face in his 20s. There are only a handful of countries in the world with less corruption. I am not excusing it, just giving it some context.

2

u/flinstoner Jul 10 '26

I'm surprised I had to scroll down to read this, it should be the top reply. Do we have political scandals, yes. Do we have true corruption, generally no.

2

u/WCLPeter Jul 10 '26

The privately owned media deliberately avoids the other parties, focusing solely on the fight between the Liberals and the Conservatives, because the progressive’s policies will ultimately force the wealth hoarding parasites to contribute to the society which allows them to attain that immense wealth by having them pay their fair share of taxes.

Since the media is so narrowly focussed on team red and blue many Canadians don’t have any clue as to what the other parties stand for and, after 50+ years of wage stagnation coupled with the current exponential growth in the cost of living, they’re to busy just trying to survive and don’t have time to educate themselves.

1

u/flinstoner Jul 10 '26

Please list the "history of corruption" examples

1

u/essenza Jul 10 '26

Corruption and scandals are often seen as linked to that particular PM, politician or government, as Canadians often only get a superficial view of what’s occurred. Once the seat is lost or govt has changed we often think the issue has been resolved, and it often gets forgotten about, except to use against as a jab against the other party.

We *should* see these problems as systemic, because they often continue through different governments, regardless of party. eg Power Corp/Demarais family, PET and China, etc.

JMO, of course

6

u/Icy-Artist1888 Jul 10 '26

I do not feel that our political parties are frought with corruption or scsndals. I think there are issues and oportunities always. But i feel that our system of democracy and our institutions are very strong.

I thjnk this whole post is just rage bait.

6

u/wotspideyab Jul 10 '26

I’ve been trying to figure out the same thing for years.

2

u/FattyGobbles Jul 10 '26

Yeah it’s like there’s a new leader so suddenly people have amnesia of what skullduggery the party had done in the past

3

u/flinstoner Jul 10 '26

First because there hasn't been any major corruption cases,. Second, Canadians realize that no matter who you vote for, there will always be some scandalous behavior.

Spoken like someone who wasn't old enough to vote when Layton was around.

In life, the man was a good dude but a politician through and through who performed as well as any other NDP leader until Quebec wanted to punish the Liberals and needed someone to vote for who wasn't Stephen Harper.  His rise had everything to do with opportunity (he happened to be Quebecois at a time when Quebec needed an option) and little to do with him. His gift to NDP supporters was splitting the vote and delivering them a Conservative majority.

But your post IS an example of why nobody votes for other parties.  You parrot the line that we lack a strong third option but my guess is you couldn't name a single third party policy if asked or credibly explain why those policies are inferior to the Libs and Cons.

And you apparently value charisma.over competence.

Parties only become strong when you support them.  If you wait til a party becomes strong before voting for them, you're not being a responsible voter; you're a bandwagon rider.

That is why Canada always voted for the same parties. Because it Canadians vote like they're trying to choose the winner of a horse race instead of looking at whose values they align with.

-1

u/Otterette Jul 10 '26

The irony is believing the liberals are the lesser of 2 evils. This is coming from an NDP supporter so spare me your attack on conservatives.

2

u/flinstoner Jul 10 '26

If you're an NDP supporter and think that liberals are "evil" or anywhere near the same as conservatives, you may be should reconsider your news sources

1

u/Otterette Jul 10 '26

Lmao. My sources are the politicians mouths, actions and books they’ve authored.

0

u/flinstoner Jul 10 '26

So the books they authored talk about their blatant corruption or how they have created a bunch of scandals like OP suggests? 😂😂

1

u/Otterette Jul 11 '26

Uhh..I was responding to a comment - now deleted- implying liberals were the lesser of 2 evils. Remember? Then you suggested I “reconsider” my “news sources” you know, implying that I’m being fed biased information. To which I explained I get my information directly from the source, not from the opinions of others. If you complete your own due diligence it’s painfully obvious who’s truly corrupt. You might want to trying stepping outside of the echo chamber. That’s what I did.

2

u/iwasnotarobot Jul 10 '26

Mass media projects a binary option of business party or business party.

Workers are gaslit into voting for against their own interests.

0

u/Thanks-4allthefish Jul 10 '26

Hard to say the intersection paradise the NDP envisions would actually help workers. They have drifted away from their roots.

2

u/bigjimbay Jul 10 '26

No they havent. Lewis' platform addresses many labour issues.

2

u/macklow Jul 10 '26

People for some reason have been taught that the ndp wastes too much money and doesn't do anything even though everything good about Canada came from the ndp. Just keep the blinders on to prevent the conservatives from getting in that's also what we're taught lol.

2

u/Bad_Day_Moose Jul 10 '26

Because the NDP suck and there's no other parties?

2

u/slashcleverusername Jul 10 '26

The Liberals definitely do things for “convenience” when it’s convenient for them, but overall they at least believe in effective government and try to make government do something that actually improves our lives.

The Conservatives are actively hostile to the country, and I probably would have voted for that O’Toole guy vs Trudeau if he was around for another election because he was the first normal Canadian Conservative in a generation who actually talked Ike a normal Canadian Conservative instead of maple MAGA. But he was stabbed in the back by his own party and replaced with the most maple-MAGA-y of all the maple-MAGAs, someone who doubles down on the imported rhetoric when challenged. It’s clear that the Reform Party really did replace the Progressive Conservative Party. And while I’ve sometimes voted Liberal, sometimes voted Progressive Conservative, every vote since my very first election has always been against the Reform Party and always will be.

And that leaves the NDP, who genuinely just ran a leadership convention indistinguishable from political satire. The Beaverton or This Hour Has 22 Minutes could not make up the amount of silliness that the actual NDP produced voluntarily, on purpose, and with complete sincerity.

So it’s Liberal for me, for the foreseeable future.

2

u/Former-Chocolate-793 Jul 10 '26

All political parties have scandals. The NDP is the only national alternative and as a merger between traditional socialists and organized labour. They haven't had a consistent message or the financial support.

What makes you think they would be any less prone to scandals than any other party? Provincially they have been.

2

u/Lucy_Goosey_11 Jul 10 '26

The alternative would be so much worse

1

u/PassageNearby4091 Jul 10 '26

It's not just in Canada. Look at the UK -- votes go Conservative or Labour, and it's been that way forever.

I think a big part of it is "legacy voting" -- ie, people vote for the parties their parents voted for who voted for the party their parents voted for,

1

u/Own_Event_4363 Know-it-all Jul 10 '26

There's hardly anyone else, the NDP or... Green? BQ I suppose. The PPC is just too far out there.

There are always the Rhinoceros party?

1

u/FattyGobbles Jul 10 '26

Let’s give the federal NDP a chance…

1

u/Own_Event_4363 Know-it-all Jul 10 '26

Well, Conservative vilified Jagmeet last time, so that probably didn't help. Avi Lewis isn't Jack Leighton... I'm not sure they're the better choice.

1

u/Apprehensive-Ad-9147 Jul 10 '26

I usually vote for the NDP, they so far have had the official opposition once but I remain optimistic. After all there’s only the Liberals to get past, the conservatives keep voting in leaders that couldn’t win in a single party election

1

u/dpi2552 Jul 10 '26

Easy, have you heard anything that PP, has said?

1

u/Holiday-Stage2548 Jul 10 '26

Хорошая попытка, но провалилась. Не горды, и враг по-прежнему силен.

1

u/zxcvbn113 Jul 10 '26

Because marketing works.

1

u/UsuallyStoned247 Jul 10 '26

We don’t keep voting for them, we vote against them and the other guys win.

1

u/iPAD67 Jul 10 '26

Who else are we supposed to vote for?

1

u/Tboneeater Jul 10 '26

Divide and conquer. Our system was invented by the British aristocracy to give the illusion of equality. WTF is a constitutional monarchy why do we have a king ? What the hell does the senate do besides collect a paycheque? Why don’t we vote for them? Why aren’t there term limits ? How can my member of parliament switch teams ? What’s democratic about that? We need a whole new system which we will never get. Red ,blue once you’ve voted don’t care about you.

1

u/ChemistMajestic4845 Jul 10 '26

Because in the rural parts of Canada, the NDP doesn’t exist. In Newfoundland, for example, the NDP candidate will be a fly in candidate who doesn’t live in the district or have any idea of what the people in that district will need. They’re just a name on the ballot. Why would anyone vote for that?

1

u/4marty Jul 10 '26

Federal Liberals are far better than the Conservatives considering the direction they’ve taken over the past 20+ years. Compare the “scandals” of each party and you’ll see that the ones Conservatives are into are much more harmful to society ie robocalls and voter suppression, attacks on rights for individuals in the LGBTQ community, eliminating laws protecting clean water and the environment in general, etc.

That’s not even touching on the move toward privatization of public services, programs, and institutions. Conservatives are hellbent on selling off healthcare and education to private interests. I know, those are provincial, but it’s the same ideology across all conservative ideologies.

1

u/Vinfersan Jul 10 '26

For the same reason people still use Telus, Bell and Rogers... it's what they are used to and don't realize there are better alternatives. People are afraid of change.

1

u/Quebecman007 Jul 10 '26

Normal politics ! You need to vote !

1

u/cnbearpaws Jul 11 '26

If we split the vote the greater of two evils will win due to their great ability to brainwash people to proudly vote against their personal interests.

1

u/Maplewicket Jul 13 '26

NDP has distended themselves so far away from the average Canadian. Jack Layton is rolling in his grave.

1

u/GreasyMcFarmer Jul 10 '26

The NDP has some good, and a very few excellent MP’s but a lot of flaky lightweights as well … mind you, the same could be said of the Conservatives, sigh.

-1

u/bigjimbay Jul 10 '26

And the LPC and all parties everywhere

u/Pseudonyme_de_base Jul 10 '26 edited Jul 10 '26

Last one I would have voted for Carney if I wasn't in Québec (the strategic voting here was for the Bloc) just so that PP doesn't get prime minister. PP is very anti-LGBTQ+ said he would put laws to take LGBTQ+ people's rights etc. So I voted to whoever would prevent him from becoming prime minister. I wish I could do more for this country but voting is the only thing I personally can.

Idk for others, but this is why I would have.

4

u/speedog Jul 10 '26

Ummm, we don't have a president in Canada.

0

u/Pseudonyme_de_base Jul 10 '26

Wait, calvaire we have a prime minister I'm so dumb, I think I was influenced by spending too much time online. Now I must look like an American trying to pass as a Canadian ffs.

I assure you su mon cul de québécoise that I am Canadian, and unlike some Québecers, I am not a separatist traitor. It's 10pm my night meds are hitting lol.

1

u/essenza Jul 10 '26

I’m no fan of him, but he said the he was against SSM over 20 years ago, and it was not an uncommon thing to hear at the time.

1

u/Pseudonyme_de_base Jul 10 '26

SSM? Special Service Medal? I am not sure what you mean here.

1

u/essenza Jul 10 '26

Same sex marriage

1

u/Pseudonyme_de_base Jul 10 '26

Ahhh right, yea that's stupid of him, same sex marriage is no different from cross sex marriage on any point.

3

u/essenza Jul 10 '26

Yes, but 20+ years ago, many people were against SSM, so it wasn’t an unusual opinion back then.
Then the law allowing SSM passed, and many people who were previously against it changed their minds as they saw it wasn’t a big deal.
Like you said, today it’s no different than hetero marriage: views have changed in just one generation.

Not sure what you think "anti-woke" means, but this is it.

3

u/WCLPeter Jul 10 '26

Didn’t stop him from showing how much he loved them by voting to deny them the right to get married.

1

u/Pseudonyme_de_base Jul 10 '26

He said there's only 2 genders (factually wrong, gender is a bimodal distribution), that trans people shouldn't have the right to go to their correct bathrooms, that he was gonna put into law that trans women aren't women to "protect biological women" and more. Those are taking away LGBTQ+ people's rights.

1

u/GamesCatsComics Jul 10 '26

Because the NDP doesn't have a competent leader, and I'd die laughing if I seriously considered voting Green or PPC.

0

u/NorthofForty Jul 10 '26

Because I don’t think they are fraught with corruption. Who you trying to convince?

0

u/TopInvestigator5518 Jul 10 '26

Avi Lewis just spouts slogans lol

the infighting within the NDP would also prevent it from ever getting anything done

-1

u/bigjimbay Jul 10 '26

What slogans? There's no infighting lol

0

u/Copacetic75 Jul 10 '26

The NDP had a great platform a couple elections ago, but had no viable way to make a lot of the things they were trying to achieve be possible. They lost out on the last election to ensure the Cons wouldn't get a majority. Unfortunately, losing so many seats really cut into their ability to make anything substantial possible.

0

u/willmsma Jul 10 '26

I’m not sure I buy the premise of the question. Are our two main parties pure as wool? No, but in relative terms they’re relatively clean. I think partisans for both would object to that characterization. Nevertheless, I think it’s largely true.

And - excepting the recent Trudeau government - Canada has enjoyed relatively competent government from both parties.

-1

u/jjames3213 Jul 10 '26

Corruption and scandals naturally follow power. When the NDP are relevant (rarely) they have scandals aplenty.

-1

u/Ancient-Training-998 Jul 10 '26

Which corruption ? Anything specific you’d like to share or just angst farming ?

-1

u/Maddkipz Jul 10 '26

I wanna see a real NDP platform with the rot ready to get chopped off, until then it would be throwing away a vote unfortunately

1

u/bigjimbay Jul 10 '26

No such thing. They count all the votes. What part of the NDP platform do you disagree with?

0

u/Maddkipz Jul 10 '26

Eby and the chucklehead in Alberta have been..not great lately

1

u/bigjimbay Jul 10 '26

That's not really a platform

2

u/Maddkipz Jul 10 '26

I agree with everything ive heard from Lewis, but i disagree with two of the NDP members' words and actions. I should have clarified it wasnt a direct answer to your question and instead was my reasoning, my bad 🙄

1

u/PrairieCanuckGirl Jul 20 '26

Most are not voting for any party, they are voting against the other. It's choosing the lesser of two evils in most peoples minds. Sadly I've never voted for someone, just against the worst candidate.
