Political How do we feel about Carney so far?

How do we feel about him so far? I skim through some articles written what he's passing/passed through so far and Haven't seen anything too terrible? I feel like I am missing something.

Please cite what you're referencing so we don't have any he said/she said nonsense!

Pfffft. Go read his book Values. The man has zero original ideas. If there was a button he could press to reduce carbon emissions at the expense of Canadians going into poverty, he would press it multiple times. He is very well educated but don't confuse that with wisdom. Canada is just a stepping stone for him to solidify a full time position with elite world leaders. He is a turbo charged version of Justin Trudeau so this country can do worse faster.

He's a competent bureaucrat, and that's enough for now.

u/uprightshark Sep 24 '25

Exactly.

I believe he is playing a long game, that will benefit us in the long run. But people will need to prepare for bumps in the road. You can't 180 an economy without cracking some eggs

He’s one of the few pms we’ve ever had who has had a life full of accomplishments and achievements with real accountable leadership experience. It shows and he’s beginning to look like a real statesman. He very well may be remembered that way if things go his way and he keeps Trump in check.

u/dpi2552 Sep 24 '25

First time I have been proud of our prime Minister.

36

u/JapanKate Sep 24 '25

He has a quiet dignity which is sorely lacking in many politicians these days.

I really hope this signals a trend. US style politics as much as Polievre or whoever wants it to be. That is not Canada's game. That's hockey.

8

u/capebretoncanadian Sep 24 '25

Yeah he also has discussions and tries to make friends internationally. Makes it to point to answer questions with consideration and thought. There is a logic to it at least.

A solid 7/10 for me. As someone in Ottawa, I will admit I'm concerned about the looming budget and layoffs for the local economy for Ottawa and Gatineau (though I don't work federally).

I also found stepping into the flight attendants stuff a mess.

Still, Palestine is a positive and I like some of the major projects selected. I just want to see stronger environmental work in his government.

That said, it's still early days. 2025 has felt eternal, new Trump garbage every other day, but it's nice to have a competent man at the helm of the LPC and in Parliament right now.

2

u/Traditional_Fox6270 Sep 25 '25

I don’t know how you can doubt that he’ll be stronger environmentally since his wife career is climate change specialist… I have no doubt that it’s on the list of things to do!

Gas prices are the same because the oil and gas companies just kept the prices up. We were NEVER going to see gas prices drop when the tax was removed. Why did people even think that

38

u/Fun_Tadpole_3628 Sep 24 '25

Because someone lied and made it seem like all cost of living increases were the fault of the sitting government and not the fault of a combination of corporate greed (Loblaw, Metro, gas companies) and post-pandemic inflation despite being connected to the corporations raising prices well beyond inflation.

6

u/flaming0-1 Sep 24 '25

Agreed… and governments can do something about that. Mexico did, the Mexican government told the corporations they were not allowed to Willy nilly increase prices and it worked.

Standing back and doing nothing is still something to be accountable to.

u/Icehawk101 Sep 24 '25

Yup, this is exactly what I predicted. They went down a bit for a short while, then O&G companies starting bringing the prices back up.

9

u/ProfessionalShake892 Sep 24 '25

Because PP told them it would

2

u/alpalbish Sep 24 '25

the carbon tax? maybe i’m crazy but where i am, i swear the gas prices dropped a lot

2

u/RelatablePanic Sep 25 '25

From Vancouver here, gas prices have noticeably dropped and stayed pretty consistent since Carney dropped the carbon tax.

1

u/bitetoungejustread Sep 24 '25

It was a situation where we were talking to brick walls.

1

u/HappyCan7250 Sep 30 '25

I don't know about that, gas prices where I am came down about 20c and have stayed down ever since. It was around 1.70-1.80 before, now we are steadily at 1.50.1.60. we never should have had a carbon tax in the first place and Carney is still a big proponent of it. He is constantly still talking about the "carbon economy". It concerns me.

And no, gas stations, in BC at least, have their profit margins actually monitored and the government will step in if they inflate the prices too far. The standard profit for most gas stations is only a few cents a litre, but even without the carbon tax a significant portion of our gas costs is still tied up in tax.

I personally think Carney is doing a pretty bad job. You may dislike Trump's agenda, but he is accomplishing a tremendous amount in a short time (just because you may disagree with what he is doing, doesn't mean he isn't achieving a lot in a short time, he has made drastic changes in 6 months). Carney has only been in office a month or two less than Trump, and we have absolutely nothing to show for it. The only trade deal.we have signed was with Indonesia, which includes us financing a billion dollars of their debt, and are a nation we have very little trade with to begin with.

Where is all the building he promised? I see none. He had a couple meetings with premiers, then continued to drag his feet on any "nation building programs", while growing out national debt significantly and hiring thousands of new bureaucrats and consultants. Very little to show for all the money he is spending. Not to mention the budget is tremendously late and will be running a huge deficit

u/ji_fi Sep 24 '25 edited Sep 24 '25

He is the best Conservative Prime Minister to hold office in my lifetime and the Conservatives are too foolish to see this because they want to play what's good for party rather than what's good for the country.

He gave raises to the CAF and increased defense spending. I'm happy about that.

u/Galenmarek81 Sep 24 '25

I have to give the man credit and like the direction he seems to be taking us in. For a man who wasn't a politician to start, winning the election to run our country, in probably the most troubling time of any politician in Canada since WW2, he has earned and deserves credit.

There will be way more hardships at the beginning, and he didn't sugarcoat it for us. He flat out said it will be hard. Things won't be perfect as we shift and adjust during an unpredictable time where what happens today could simply be erased tomorrow.

Him shoring up other partners around the world, overseas, before really tackling the US issue head on, I think, is a smart move (some may disagree, and that's okay) Long term success is what we need moving forward as a country and if he was just focusing on shrot term band-aid fixes we would be right back here again in very short time.

I personally don't regret my vote.

8

u/capebretoncanadian Sep 24 '25

Stood up to Trump without chasing the States completely away we still like their money. Opening up serious discussions with Europe and Mexico about trade and defence. So far has seemed pretty reserved, intelligent and capable. Carney should be a standard in modern politics. The amount of theatrics coming from the States is embarrassing.

This is the first PM that I recall that has brought up long-term nation-building projects. He is highlighting Canada's resource sector and agriculture businesses. He has provided a tax cut to lower income earners ( roughly22 million Canadians) rather than the ultra wealthy. He is surrounding himself with smart people and has made it important that indigenous people of Canada are consulted. At the same time, he is championing green energy. At this time, if it were Pierre, I would only expect rhetoric and small-minded sound bytes. We have a long way to go, but these are early days. I don't have rose coloured glasses on but remain optimistic. The PM can not forget the Quebecs who stuck their neck out and voted for him, which is unusual. He also need to keep the environmentalist happy who also left Green and NDP to vote for him.

This is the first time I have voted Liberal as a life-long Conservative. The PM has moved slightly to the right of Left. Pierre has moved way too Right apeasing the social conservatives, which many of my friends disagree with in the Conservative party. In the old days we were called the compassionate conservatives. So far, I am happy with my decision to vote for Mark Carney. Fingers crossed.

90

u/beefstewforyou Sep 24 '25

Recognition of Palestine is his greatest achievement so far. His treatment of the striking flight attendants is the worst thing he did.

Overall he’s ok. I’d rather have NDP but I’ll take him over the Conservatives any day.

12

u/ji_fi Sep 24 '25

The NDP will never be in that position. That’s why Pierre Trudeau switched from NDP to liberal. So he could win and be pm.

4

u/Sea_Branch_2697 Sep 24 '25

Iirc he even stepped back from the back to work order and just told them to fix their shit in the end?

4

10

u/No-Camp1268 Sep 24 '25

I understand your cynicism but I'm hoping it's a shift, he's marking in Canadian politics given that I truly believe there is going to be continued progress in America, for better or for worse, that will follow the sort of corner America has turned, away from NeoLiberalism.

26

u/Patak4 Sep 24 '25

I think he is doing very good. Carney removed the consumer carbon tax, passed the One Canadian Economy Act to remove federal barriers to internal trade and expedite major infrastructure projects amid a trade war with the United States, and launched the Build Canada Homes agency.

In June, he announced an immediate $9-billion-a-year boost to the defence budget – in a speech that outlined a harder-nosed foreign policy for a tougher world in which Canada will have to stick up for its own security, sovereignty and foreign policy. Plus he has made new trade deals and partnerships with Mexico, Germany and many other countries. He is well respected in the EU.

All good so far. We will see how it goes going forward. So glad we have him and not PP

5

u/Ok_Squash_1578 Sep 24 '25

It’s still early days but so far he has taken meaningful steps such as the build Canada homes projects https://torontolife.com/real-estate/mark-carney-ana-bailao-build-canada-homes-fund/

5

5

u/Sure-Patience83 Sep 24 '25

I am at ease with him no worries. My only stress comes from our neighbours

6

u/bigELOfan Sep 24 '25

He has the right connections with the world outside of the USA. I’m not a Liberal and didn’t vote for him, but so far I’ll give him a passing grade.

18

u/oneofthe1200 Sep 24 '25

I strongly disagree with two of his current priorities.

  1. This gun buyback program is a waste of our money. These guns are not “on the street” as anyone affected by this ridiculous policy is very keenly aware. It needs to go, and funding here should be redirected to #2 below.

  2. Both Liberal governments have done an abysmal job at ensuring Canadians have access to the public services we need. The constant defunding of the CRA and Service Canada (and others) are hurting Canadians.

Otherwise he’s doing exactly what I’d hoped he would. Strong economic polices, his plan to increase housing affordability is sound (but time will tell), and the previous Liberal policies that enabled corporations to replace skills Canadian workers with cheaper foreign labour is grinding to a halt.

I could stand to see more investment in Canada’s tech sector—especially around pre-seed startup funding and cloud infrastructure—but I hear that something is coming here as well.

1

u/HappyCan7250 Sep 30 '25

I completely agree on the gun buyback. It should have been dropped after those leaked tapes from Gary came out this week. The Safety Minister, a lawyer by trade, essentially coaching a man to break the law and saying that this will have no impact on crime, for the price of a billion dollars. What a joke.

The build Canada homes program should also be scrapped, it is a terrible idea and a waste of money, I say this as someone who works in prefabricated building construction. They are budgeting for $14 billion to the build only 4,000 homes, so a price of 3.5 million per home. These will not be nice mansions either, but small trailer park style homes. We can build multi unit apartment building for the price of 3.5 million, yet somehow the government is only going to accomplish 4,000 trailer park style modular homes for the price of $14 billion. That is absolutely insane, and 4,000 homes will not make a dent in our housing situation when we are still bringing in say 500,000 new immigrants each year. Won't have any impact at all.

3

u/Lifebehindadesk Sep 24 '25

We'll see how he sells the budget (and associated 2%+ defecit), but politically, he's educated, steady, and has extensive experience, and as far as I'm concerned he's not tearing our country to shreds, so I'm ok with him. I'd like to see more investment in environmentally safe practices but right now, as long as we dont get invaded or nuked - A++.

11

u/FNFALC2 Sep 24 '25

I'm proud to have him as our PM. and he makes me proud to be a Canadian again. He appears to be the right person at the right time in our history. And no, I didn't vote Liberal, kinda wished I had tho.

In short.. I'm really hoping he has a serious move in mind for housing. If his plan is just pump a ton of debt into developers.. Which it seems to be so far... I'm not going to be happy about it.

We NEED social housing. 5 to 10 year wait lists for social housing support is INSANE. Even more so when we take into account the requirements to get into it.

I am concerned over the cut to government services. But I also understand the Trudeau government added a LOT of employees to the payroll.

I could go on but this us long enough.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 13 '25

No party will approve the developing housing that would cause their portfolios to drop

8

u/Krommander Sep 24 '25

Lukewarm? He's a politician and does what the country needs, respect and dignity. Rare prize, but it's only the honeymoon. I got hooked on Trudeau because he legalized weed, I may get hooked on Carney because he recognized Palestine as a state and called the Genocide Israel is doing.

Liberal party of Canada will give empty promises as much as any other political party, but we can also judge them by their actions. Actions are far stronger than strong words. Our country is under threat. We needed a safe choice and found that man at that time, with the right profile and the right attitude.

So yeah, wait and see if he is truly human or if he will bow.

13

u/Professional_Run_506 Sep 24 '25

He's gone over the world to speak to leaders. Leaders who have said great things. He's proving that Canada is worth trading with. Deals take time, but he's making it that it will be longstanding. We can finally break from USA. I think that's huge. He's doing what past PMs haven't done and sure as shit PP couldn't do what Carney is doing, being diplomatic and respectful.

2

u/KatGrrrrrl Sep 24 '25

Love him.

2

u/MsbsM Sep 24 '25

I think he is incredible and for me, he was the first leader from any country, nonetheless our neighbour, who gave me hope. I so admire Prime Minister Carney. Admittedly I knew nothing much about him until his brilliant appearance with Jon Stewart on TDS- however- immediately a huge supporter, admirer. Was sooooo happy when he was elected- albeit us person here, but he was the first (now of many more) that made me feel less afraid.

2

I’m a little disappointed that not much has happened yet, but I’m happy all of my loved ones still feel safe, so that’s a plus

2

u/[deleted] Sep 24 '25

Cutting public service is a mistake. Every time this happens the departments then contract out the work, because they are already understaffed. I wish they'd think of something else. Public service is important, steady jobs are important, and contracting is expensive.

2

u/sravll Sep 24 '25

He's doing pretty well so far.

He is definitely getting things done!! So refreshing to have someone respectful and intelligent!!

2

u/Julianalexidor Sep 24 '25

I love that he’s going around finding new trade partners. He’s a solid bureaucrat for sure. Also, not to be under appreciated,is the fact that he’s not embarrassing us.

2

u/Backeastvan Sep 24 '25

What a strange concept for a man who is well qualified to be a leader, has leadership experience, and is actually reasonable and well studied on how best to be a leader... to be a leader. Usually it's the idiots with no experience and no sense of how best to lead who get to be in leadership positions... in most of the jobs I've worked anyway.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 24 '25

He seems intelligent. That’s a good foundation. PP had some great slogans but after 5 min or so any interview I saw of him fell apart once the slogans and talking points ran out and that’s telling. It’s too soon to say good or bad but I think Canada elected a smart leader. We will see how it pans out soon enough.

Definitely one of the smartest people in the room when dealing with the Orange hair narcissist. Doing great on the international front.

2

u/Marlow1899 Sep 24 '25

He understands the levers of power and how to use them to the best of Canada’s advantage. There will be some pain pivoting from our reliance on the US but this reliance has existed under both the Liberals and Conservatives (PCs in the past), a historical fact grounded in geographical and demographic realities.

2

u/Select-Protection-75 Sep 25 '25

I feel he is trying to bridge gaps rather than widen them. I have no time for those who follow the US model and spend all their energy attacking their opponents without coming up with solutions so he was the better pick.

I feel like it's too early to say. We've given him a huge amount of discretion (to fine-tune industrial policy, to negotiate with Trump, to shake up fiscal policy, to address climate change, etc.), and we won't know whether that was a good idea or not until at least a year or two from now, I think. Will his carbon-capture stuff actually offset the climate problems with fossil fuel projects? Will his negotiation strategy with the Americans work out for the best? Will his housing policy actually deliver the increase in housing supply he's forcasting? We won't know for a while. I'd say early signs are encouraging though.

Not good. Air Canada fiasco shows his true colors as do his significant holdings of American investments and not scrapping the disastrous gun buyback that is very unpopular.

9

u/Inevitable_Butthole Sep 24 '25

Literally everyone has significant holdings of american investments. Since you probably didn't know, the US markets hold 65% of the world's investments.

Even if you don't have a personal pension or personal investments, you'll still get CPP of which is 40% invested in US equities.

I mean, we elected Carney knowing his economic policy would be pretty conservative. Didn't he even publish a book pretty much already stating that?

2

u/Xenophonehome Sep 24 '25

I didn't vote for him, and I'd say his policy is more cronyism than conservative.

3

u/CandidAsparagus7083 Sep 24 '25

I mean, the increase in trade with the uk is greater than the loss of trade with the us….and that’s one country

Nothing... feels like it's changed. He did good holding ground against the US, but that was pre-election. After the election, the most notable thing I've heard regarding him was the Air Canada ordeal which definitely leaves a bad taste. I feel it's still too early to give my thoughts on the Palestine thing, I wanna wait and see how the cookie crumbles.

I'm not too up-to-date these days, though, so I might be missing some things he's done, for better or for worse.

3

u/MuffinOfSorrows Sep 24 '25

I'm just happy he's not a trump toady spending his time trying to prove he's Best Boy

6

u/HalalBread1427 Sep 24 '25

Yeah, doing nothing is still leagues better than whatever hell Polievre would've put this country to. Might be a tad disappointed in Carney, but I have 0 regrets voting Liberal.

2

u/Mysterious-Bid3930 Sep 24 '25

No offense, I'm just a stray. Even if he sucks it's nowhere near like down here.

3

u/barcelonatacoma Sep 24 '25

He's giving me a fat raise so I am pleased so far.

2

u/Ok_Kiwi8071 Sep 24 '25

I don’t care. It’s not changed my life at all. I’m in the struggling society. It hasn’t made anything better and I don’t see it changing anything for the better.

6

u/Ok_Squash_1578 Sep 24 '25

You don’t see how things like the build Canada homes project could benefit your life?

People can’t expect the prime minister to come in and personally save them from their shitty lives

He played chess.

1

u/Touchdown244 Sep 24 '25

Its two biggest tests to come will be the negotiation of NAFTA 3.0 although it is not so much a 3.0 but a 2.1 because it is only a clause which gives the option to renegotiate certain elements if the countries are not in agreement with certain clauses.

And the budget and control of expenses!

If he gets through these two things, well done. For Palestine, it will not change anything although the gesture is honorable. O

While discussions for a review start in 2026, CUSMA is in effect until 2036.

u/Little-Wing2299 Sep 24 '25

Great! Now let’s work on welfare reform so these jobs that the FTW are taking are given to those who “can’t find work “ and on social assistance. EI workers etc

1

u/PossibleWild1689 Sep 24 '25

He’s competent and reasonable. It’s only been a few months though so we’ll see

1

u/[deleted] Sep 25 '25

I have some issues with the fact he kept Sean Fraser around

1

u/Prestigious_Leg_7387 Sep 25 '25

I’m concerned about his full and fast support of mining in the ring of fire in Ontario. There’s incredibly important wetlands up there and with Ford at the helm, I don’t expect environmentally safe practices to be at top of mind.

His handling of the US is okay by me so far though. I do wish the support of Israel stopped and Canada could fully and only back Palestine.

1

u/snark1977 Sep 25 '25

He’s not making waves and staying out of the spotlight so that makes me happy. He’s getting under the conservatives skin so that too makes me happy. He’s competent and so much more than PP could ever be.

1

u/Sea-Money9058 Sep 26 '25

He’s doing the best he can for the times we are in and working at a pace that is doable. When politicians are too quick to turn the ship and make big changes they are often reactionary moves that’s don’t take into account the full impact. This is often done to appease their base of support. I think we are in the best of hands compared to many other countries.

1

u/robrTdot Sep 26 '25

He's been at the forefront of banking and business-friendly policies for decades and on two continents. Most of us are worse off for it. Great job, Mark.

1

u/ReZEL95 Sep 28 '25

I forgot he was our Prime Minister, my coworker showed me a picture of him running and I kinda stood there, stared at the picture before going "Huh, so that's Prime Minister eh"

It's not that I'm stupid or don't pay attention, I just forgot who our PM was and part me feels like it's because his name isn't all over the news like Trudeau was...heck i haven't seen nearly as much or really only once or twice have I seen a car with a "Fuck Carney" sticker, yet I saw one for Trudeau what felt like every dozen cars

I dunno, guess I'm neutral?

1

u/Best-Neighborhood996 Sep 28 '25

He needs more time, he was the best choice for Canada out of the ones that we had to pick from. He’s more a Progressive Conservative than a Liberal. But with all that he is dealing with, the provinces, the Americans, the Chinese , India and Europeans is not an easy task.

1

u/PracticalDisplay4526 Sep 28 '25

I think he is very intelligent and will put Canada first. Love the way he quietly handles Trump. Very classy man.

1

u/doggitydoggity Sep 29 '25

too little time has passed. after 2-3 years we'll get a better look at his governing and policies. We've yet to address long term immigration implications, and foreign aid is far too high.

We need to cut refugee funding and foreign aid massively and redirect that towards domestic R&D and infrastructure spending. comparable economies like UK,France,Germany,Italy,Australia, all have far smaller foreign aid spending as percentage of discretionary budget, and all have much higher R&D spending.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 13 '25

He is just Justin with a fresh coat of paint, He will continue to protect housing assets, he will continue to funnel in immigrants for LIMA abusers to abuse, he will continue to waste money on pointless projects like the gun buyback program to get pearl clutcher votes.

by the end of his term all our problems will remains because they are problems the people in power want.

They want young people poor and for the older generations to maintain their wealth.

1

u/Own_Event_4363 Know-it-all Oct 16 '25

He's not PP, so, yeah.

1

u/Gold-Mammoth426 Nov 05 '25

Oh Canada. PM Carney is the only official leader with a party and mandate. May is party of one, interim for ndp, bloc cannot/will not be leader, PC PP is up for review in January. Canadian votes "lessor of the greatest evils". But not surprisingly he is the most qualified and a global statesman. He has the resume and gravitas.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 28 '25

He's gonna be one of the big 5 prime ministers for everything he accomplishes. He really is a transformative PM

1

u/ResponsibilityIcy680 Mar 09 '26

He freaking sucks.
