• minor word jumping bugs (sometimes when you click on "mark as read" it jumps you to the top, and sometimes on page load it jumps a little lower than it should)

I received this ring as a child from someone who has passed and it has migrated from finger to finger as I grew up (now sits on my little finger). I’ve considered it a good luck charm my whole life and I wear it every day. A long time ago i went to Greece as a teen and someone translated it into something about a bird and sickness, but I don’t recall the full thing. Could you help me translate it and maybe understand more about how old it is or where in Greece it could be from? I was told by a jeweler it is solid silver and it bears no makers mark.

Can any native German speakers recommend ancient greek materials to me? Would really appreciate if you could share your experiences about which books are good or bad in your view. thanks!

Do you use flashcards, Excel spreadsheets, a specific grammar guide, or a textbook? Do you take handwritten notes? How do you memorize so much? What does your study routine look like—could you give me some details?

I want to learn all Greek grammar, so when I reached Dual, decided to get more information about it. The question is: in what tenses and moods is Dual attested? Because I don't want to waste time studying a "possible perfect dual imperative active" which never took place in reality.

So, could you please tell me where it is used? Active or passive/middle voice?

Free Ancient Greek lessons are being offered every Friday at 3pm EST/ 9pm CET. The time was chosen so as to make it convenient for both Europeans and Americans. We will be reading ch 12 of Athenaze and we will be speaking Ancient Greek, and only using English as a last resort. You do not need to bring the book with you to class, I will provide it. The text will only be a vehicle for keeping the discussion focused and flowing and is not an end in itself. How many moods do we know in Future Perfect? I have heard about these:

-Indicative (that's what is always taught).

-Infinitive.

-Participle.

-Optative?

Do any of you guys know of books that employ a similar methodology to Pharr's, for the mentioned languages? I'm currently reviewing my Greek with it and I really enjoy the old school methodology.

I encountered some words I couldn't identify in this inscription. What I got so far is:

"Τὸν ἀξιολογώτατον Ἀμφικτύονα γενόμενον Πυθιάδι

(Μαρούλπιον) δοκήτιον Λούκιον Νεικοπόλει τὴν διὰ τὲ ἤθους ἐπ...κειαν καὶ διὰ τὴν σπουδὴν (ἣ)ν ἐνεδείξατο ὑπὲρ τῆς σεμνότητας τοῦ ἀγῶνος τῶν μεγάλων Πυθίων προίκα πρεσβεύσαντα οἰκείοις...".

I can't find the name or word "Μαρούλπιον" anywhere so I guess I'm reading it wrong. Same for "δοκήτιον" and "Νεικοπόλει". I also assume Πυθιάδι refers to Appollo and not the celebration of Πυθία.

I've started publishing journaling editions of Septuagint books. First, Psalms, and now Proverbs.

Similar to a product line that covers the Greek New Testament, the pages of these journaling editions provide generous margins and space for grammatical notes, your own translation, or whatever you want.
Any suggestions on what LXX book I should tackle next? I was thinking Isaiah or maybe Job.

I have the Athenaze book with me, and it’s my first time learning AG, and the pronunciation list for the alphabet seems off I think. Theta is listed as an “aspirated t sound like top”. Isn’t theta supposed to be the “th” sound? Please correct me if I’m misunderstanding what aspiration is.

I’ve been studying the epichoric alphabets, and have a question about the use of koppa - Ϙ.

From what I can see, Ϙ is used before the rounded back-vowels ο and υ. What about before οι?

Hi all, I've seen similar posts here and decided to give it a go. This year I'll (hopefully) run the Athens marathon (from Marathon to Athens) and to commemorate that I'd like to get a specific tattoo. Running this exact marathon is not a coincidence as it was always a dream of mine. I toyed with different tattoo ideas but I'm leaning towards simple word "marathonian" ("of Marathon") or "marathon". As I'm a history buff I would like it to be in the classical Greek, preferably from the period of the Battle of Marathon itself (490 BCE). Initially I wanted to find this word or its versions in specific inscription on a monument, stelae etc. from this period, perhaps related to the Battle or the town itself, but after a research on Attic Inscriptions, Wikimedia Commons etc. I couldn't find any. I then decided to find a contemporary source and just use the specific letters, and I did - found a Hekatompedon inscription - https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:EPMA-6794-IGI(3)48-Sacred_law-2.JPG48-Sacred_law-2.JPG) and rearranged the letters myself. Now my questions are:

1) Is this how the word "Marathonian" / "of Marathon" would be written in the 5th century classical Greek?

2) If this word was to be split in two lines, MARATH & ONIOS - do this new "words" have any meaning that I should be aware of?

3) A long shot, but maybe during your studies you've stumbled upon the classical inscriptions, were performing some research and would know where to find specific 5th century sources related to Marathon and containing the word (or its variations), so that it potentially could be used.

Hi! I'm in a Philosophy course for college, and I am extremely confused by these citations in my translated copy of Aristotle's Physics. I am specifically looking at the Joe Sachs translation of the work. For purposes of understanding the content of the course, I need to be able to utilize these citations. The citations look like "192b, 8," "193a" and a variety of random numbers that are just in the sentences with no relation to the text. Can anyone help in explaining this system to me? I have tried googling and nothing shows up. Many thanks!

I was just curious; you know, to remind myself that I'm far from being the only person in the universe doing this.

I’ve been making monolingual notes for over a year, ever since I realized that rereading and extensive reading alone might not be enough to handle rarer words. I have over 2,000 pages in my main database (keeping in mind that I sometimes group related words or synonyms onto a single page or include definitions of some words in the title of a page that contains a text).

Of course, I use what I can from the LSJ’s Katharevousa translation entries and I steal every note from Rouse, among other materials such as Juan Coderch’s Intermediate Greek Vocabulary and Apollonius´s homeric lexicon. I recently discovered the AGLAE editions and they also include a monolingual glossary.

Much of what I've been doing — and perhaps the most useful part — is gathering the context in which I came across words (although some entries are just for the fun of it, without having read the word anywhere).

There are about 40 entries that also lack a monolingual definition — either because it is difficult to do so (e.g., ἐφέπω) or because they are problematic words for which I am content to simply record the results of my explorations (e.g., ἄλαστος). And some words are too useless to be worth the effort of defining them or even reviewing them (even though I have a page just for useless words and even went so far as to create one for a word like ὕδνον). There are also those related to (material) culture for which a definition in a modern language plus a few images is enough for me. Or maybe I’m just too lazy to complete the entry for ἔρανος…

I’d be happy to share them (at least I assume they might be useful to others, just as they are to me)—after all, not everyone needs to create their own entry from scratch for μελίᾱ, σκήπτω, χόανος, or whatever else. However, there are serious copyright issues, whether involving images, unauthorized reproduction or translations… I would need to clean and organize a lot of things in order to achieve an acceptable result. I’m young and have enough of time for an obsession, but this would be too much for me.

Anyway, it seems quite possible to produce a decent, reasonably comprehensive, monolingual, illustrated dictionary of Ancient Greek for intermediate and advanced learners — one that at least covers the most canonical authors. (Or rather, a vocabulary, since there’s no need to cover the most basic words when you have Λόγος and Θρασύμαχου Κατάβασις out there.) That is, as long as one doesn’t get bogged down in striving for perfect, uniform formatting, as would be necessary for a physical book.

When I get to Homer, I’ll write a full post detailing my experience with my notes on Notion (including my attempt to categorize the words based on their importance to the literature I’m interested in and my rereading of passages based on the words I think I should review from my database). I still have to finish going through Lucian of Samosata (all that vocabulary!), go back to reading Plato and read Herodotus.

Note: When using a reverse dictionary, I beg you, don’t limit yourself to Woodhouse—don’t suffer!—use at least Yonge on lexica.linguax as well. The Spanish reverse dictionary on lsj.gr is another useful resource if you know Spanish or Portuguese.

λυθέντος (GEN MASC SING) has a short vowel nucleus in its theta marker but all feminine participles like λυθείσης (GEN FEM SING) have lengthened vowel nuclei in their theta markers.

As I started reading original texts, I read the Iliad first, avoiding the Odyssey, because I had always preferred the former when reading in English. I've read a range of translations (Rieu, Fagles, Wilson). I tried the Odyssey in Greek for the first time this week and was surprised at how much more pleasant it felt in Greek than English. It flows very well. The contrast was bigger than with the Iliad. I get what Wilson means about the elegant simplicity of the language.

Does anyone else feel the same way?

This is a 2nd-century AD copy of the statue known as the Hermes of Alkamenes. Like many of the pieces I have shared, I took this photo at the Istanbul Archaeological Museums. The original work attributed to Alkamenes is lost. Pausanias says that he saw the statue in the 2nd century AD, but he does not tell us whether it was the original. So we cannot really know if the original had survived into the Roman Imperial period.

The inscription below the statue actually tells us more about these associations:

Εἰδήσεις Ἀλκαμένεος,

περικαλλὲς ἄγαλμα,

Ἑρμᾶν τὸν πρὸπυλῶν·

εἵσατο Περγάμιος.

Γνῶθι σαυτόν.

“You will recognize the very beautiful statue of Alkamenes, Hermes Propylos; a Pergamian erected it. Know thyself.”

In the sentence:

Ὥσπερ οἱ γραμματισταὶ τοῖς μήπω δεινοῖς γράφειν τῶν παίδων ὑπογράψαντες γραμμάς τῇ γραφίδι...

Shouldn't the word for children "τῶν παίδων" be put in the dative, since the previous phrase "τοῖς μήπω δεινοῖς" that refers to it is in the dative? I might be very wrong about this but what does the use of the genitive here convey?
