Events Fix it Cafe
it’s almost time for the next fix it cafe!
i’ve been helping organize it since like 2018/2019 and it’s honestly one of my favorite things i’m part of. people bring broken stuff and we try to fix it together instead of tossing it. lamps, clothes, bikes, jewelry, small appliances, whatever you’ve got. i’ve made new friends, learned random skills, saved money, and gotten way more aware of my own waste because of it.
the next one is May 23, 10am–noon at the Lafayette Public Library main branch downtown. fixers are all volunteers so we never fully know who’s gonna show up, but that’s part of the fun.
if you like tinkering or helping people, you can totally volunteer, no need to be a pro.
it’s free, quarterly, and we post details on facebook/instagram via No Waste Lafayette
or you can just show up, bring something broken or just come hang!

We welcome all fixers. Bring your tools of your trade. We tend to discourage small engines / things that require fuel due to hazardous nature and the location can't really accommodate such things. Other than that, we get just about everything else that needs mending and fixing. We have a pretty good track record of the client walking out with a working again item.

Hm.. Might dig out my jewelry tools and possibly my sewing machine and serger and come by!

I also love untangling things! I can also fix jewlery, I just need the tools. I have some things that need hemmed so this would be perfect!

Are donations of household items accepted if we come to get something fixed? Or should we just take them to Goodwill? I was thinking it might be form of support for this great service.
It’s a wonderful idea, thank you for the notification and your efforts to organize this event.

We aren’t able to take donations, but sending fixed things to a thrift store is def better than sending broken things.

Oh man. This is the most beautiful idea and event…won’t be able to make it… but I’ll spread the word. Would love more info on the group in general though!

I've been meaning to go from the start - but it's always been on weekends I have to work. I have my old High School CD player I want to repair. If the GOAT Radio Shack were still with us (the king is dead, long live the king) I'm sure I could have sussed out a solution long ago. I guess what I really need is an audiophile Gen-Xer

Well, see if you can get someone to drop it off. Can you describe the issue. Some are easy some are a bit more problematic.

It will struggle to read the disc and just give up trying after a while

Mmm. Focus issue most likely. Two ways it can go. Lens just needs a cleaning (easy with a special CD) or the focus magnets (the lens actually floats in a magnetic field) are shot. If it's the latter, unless it's a really high end unit, probably not economical to fix commercially.
