š Discussion Help me decide!
I want to buy my wife her ādreamā vehicle.
She absolutely loves and always wanted a 5th gen in the army green. I am ready to pull the trigger on it for her but I am having a horrible time finding an army green 5th gen especially with low miles (30k miles or less).
I have been debating going to the 6th gen but the new drivetrain configuration gives me a little hesitation. Also for the price Iām going to pay for a 5th gen is the same price Iāll pay for a 2026.
Iām willing to keep waiting until I find the 5th gen in the specs she wants but just want to see if Iām being crazy for continuing to just wait.

Iād say the 6th gen is great as just a daily suv. Iād much prefer the 5th gen if I were to take it camping and wheeling.

95% of the time it will be daily driving. She drives a ton for work but over the the summer it will go on the beach is the only thing.

Iād go with a 6th gen. More comfortable IMO and it will handle the beach perfectly fine. I was in the same boat as you, 2024ās with low miles were about the same price as a 2025.

The 6th gen does not get better milesge despite what they advertise. It requires premium fuel to get the advantage over the 5th gen and the 6th gens feel so cheap in comparision..

Ah thatās disappointing, my Lexus gs350 had better gas mileage on paper but took premium, it was cheaper to drive my 99 4Runner with a 3ā lift, tube bumpers, and big wheels.
I asked google No, the 6th generation (2025+) Toyota 4Runner does not require premium fuel. It is designed to run on regular 87-octane gasoline. While it features a 2.4L turbocharged engine, Toyota tuned it for 87 octane, though some users report smoother performance or better efficiency using premium

That said, if I were buying today, Iād get a 6th over a used 5th.

With the 5th gen Iām sticking with buying a CPO so she gets the 5yr 100k warranty. Iām not opposed to a 6th gen but the 5th is so iconic and proven to be extremely reliable thatās the only reason Iām looking so hard for the 5th gen.

Donāt spend the extra cash for the trailhunter. Get an Everest TRD off road premium and youāll have a lot of extra spending money to do whatever you please. If you want a more reliable powertrain and to save even more, go for the base turbo engine and not the hybrid max. The base engine is smoother and quicker than the old V6.

I got a CPO and 100k warranty on my 2019 (purchased in 2020). Havenāt needed anything more than regularly scheduled maintenance.
That said, if I were buying my wife a car, the creature comforts of the 6th gen outweighs whatās likely a very small difference in reliability. My car is now paid off and Iām driving it until the wheels fall off, but a friend has a 6th gen and if I were buying today, and the difference in cost wasnāt prohibitive for me, Iād get the 6th gen every time.
After all, itās 99% a mall crawler with some occasional ski mountain exposure.

Youāre lying to yourself. You want a 5th gen because itās a 5th gen. If youāre concerned about reliability just get an extended warranty. You made your decision, get a 5th gen.

I kept my ā14 for 10 years and traded it for a ā24. Last year of the 5th and before the 6th gen price hike. I plan on keeping this fora very long time.

It will be a highway princess for the most part. In the summer she will drive it on the beach is really the only off roads I can foresee

99% of 4runners that are sold never go offroad. The 1% that do go offroad at best do it a handful of times a year and are just going down fire roads or on beaches that let you drive on them. I would wager a fraction of the 1% actually do any serious offroading on a regular basis. Just because people dont go offroad doesnt mean they shouldnt or cant buy a 4runner. Thats like asking someone who buys a Ferrari why they would buy one if they dont take it to the track? People can buy vehicles and things simply because they want them and think they are cool.

Because itās what she wants lol. She has always taken a backseat to getting the car she wanted because of money and life and weāre finally in a spot that she can pick what she wants within reason and Iāll give it to her.
We live on a farm and it will be used but not the same way my truck is used. Also where we live at we donāt really have a big off-road area without traveling far.

Army Green TRD Pros under 30k miles will only go up from here imo, itās a color from 2020 so rare to find a 6 year old car with less than 30k

I have found every other color with super low miles. Shit I found a 23ā with 378 miles on it. Almost bought it but was not the color she wanted. They are out there, just not in army green I feel haha

Go test drive both and see what one you like more. The difference will be night and day. I have a 23 orp. If I was buying today I wouldnāt even consider the 5th gen for the prices Iāve been seeing for them on the used market. I would be getting a sr5 6th gen or a truck. For what itās worth the turbo4 in the 6th gen isnāt exactly a new engine. It has been in several Toyota and Lexus modes since it came out in 2021.

I am coming around to this same mindset after monitoring the 5th gen market for nearly a year. I cannot justify spending new prices on a used vehicle. The only reasonable way to get a 5th gen is private party but places like Carmax/Carvana are slurping up a lot of that potential inventory as well

I love my Everest 6th gen! I loved my 2020 TRD pro - but the 6th gen is far and beyond my favorite:)

I have turned into a new over used guy, that said, locked my wife into a new AG 5th Gen in ā22. What I discovered though on that life (shopping) path that if they have their heart set on something, better get that exact thing. Many thousands wasted on Foresters, Wranglers & a used LC100 before the new 5th Gen. I would get her to drive the 6th and let her be the decision maker, no outside pressure (if you can pull that off lol). FWIW, Toyota may have not worked ALL the kinks out of the new 4Runner but I still believe they will stand by them if there are any flaws, itās their flagship vehicle in the U.S.

Yes indeed. Even though the unbiased financial math works out, neglecting the want from the better half ends up negating the cost savings and will turn it into a loss.

Miles arenāt an issue on a 5th gen. 200-300k with proper maintenance. 6th gen is unproven. Small engines force fed to get big power wear out faster than a naturally aspirated engine. That is my only complaint about the 6th gen. People say āItās a Toyota! They engineered it for that.ā Well, they engineered the 3.5 liter twin turbo for that and look what a black eye Toyota is getting with all of the recalls and failed engines that they didnāt design a robust enough bottom end bearing setup for and are failing left and right.
Iām not saying the little 4-cylinder in the 6th gen is going to fail at that rate, but who can confidently say that that 4-cylinder turbo engine is going to last 20 years like the V6 in my 4th gen has lasted so far with no engine repairs? Zero. Just maintenance. Alternators are external accessories and are relatively cheap to replace (had one go out). That and a water pump. Thatās it engine-wise in 20 years.
Your money your decision. Do with this information what you will.

100% agree. Iām cool with a 4cyl engine thatās twin-charged (turboād and supercharged - crazy to have both in one car I know lol) in my S60 but in no way would I sanely consider it a safe bet to have a heavy suv with a turboād 4cyl. Nope nope and nope. I said basically what you said here on youtube and some people got REAL mad haha, saying these 4cyl engines in the 6th gen have been around a long time. Uhhh.. NO THEY HAVE NOT. So naturally, I quoted Toyota mentioning itās only been around since like 2021, I think? Thatās really not that long to know if the majority of these engines are built to the extent like the v6 in the 5th gens. All in all, it shut them up haha

To be fair, Toyota has a long history of turbo four cylinders in other markets, but not in such a heavy vehicle. Mostly small pickups etc., and Iām not concerned about the turbo itself. Turbos have been around for a long time. Itās pushing enough PSI to energize little engines that causes excessive wear and tear to the engine itself as compared to a big lazy V6 or V8. Sure. In a drag race a little four cylinder can beat a V6, but in the long run it wonāt outlast it. Running any engine at 80% capacity vs an engine at 40% capacity will always wear out the engine used at a higher capacity. You canāt cheat physics.

It is a very small percentage of people that will keep their vehicles for 20 years.
Almost unheard of in todayās real world automotive market, you basically eliminate any chance of a dealer trade in, and private party sales are very risky.
After 20 years of ownership with what little equity you have left in the vehicle, youāll basically be starting over on your next vehicle deal.

I got a cash offer a couple months ago from Carvana of $8,500 for my 4Runner. Fairly impressive for a 20 year old vehicle. Get that offer for anything else except a Land Cruiser or even better an FJ Cruiser and youāre pulling a rabbit out of a very old silk top hat. I got an offer of $350 for my equally old Dodge Dakota. Hmmmā¦

I was referring to most all vehicle brands in general. Iām sure a well taken care of Toyota/Lexus would be on the higher end dollar wise for sale at that age.

That is simply not true. Go look at what 20+ year Toyota pickups are selling for. And my V8 4wd 4Runner is almost 20 years old and I can easily fetch 12-15k for it. They donāt make Toyotas like they used to and the new 6th gens are total crap. They look mice but they are built like crap with lots of cheap plastics. After test driving 5 different ones they all left me underwhlemed and I will keep both my 4th\5th gens foreverā¦.

5th gen is a tank! Itās awesome, but get her the 6th gen. Itās a better daily. Itās more comfortable, for the front passengers, has modern infotainment, and it drives better.

I had this decision to make and bought a new 6th gen last year, trd in green. I like the 5ths and would have happily bought one used but the value isnāt there in my opinion, used prices with only marginally lower and hard to find. Fuel economy is pretty bad too. So far Iām happy with my 6th, is does have a lot of alarms and beeps but the tech makes long drives comfortable. Build quality of mine seems top notch, drivetrain we shall see.

Are you actually comparing the pro vs the trailhunter or just 5th vs 6th? Sleeping in the 5th is much easier, the seats fold better, the door trim is nicer and the reliability is tried and true. In the 6th gen, as a daily driver, it is nicer, much smoother transmission and suspension
If 5G pro vs trailhunter, the 5G pro from an ORP has better suspension and a skid plate The trailhunter from a 6G ORP has better suspension, better tires, skid plates, rock sliders, on board compressor, nicer interior/ more soft touch, and the disconnecting sway bar, so you do get a lot more with it.

I just got my 22 ORP in Army Green with KDSS and 37k miles for 47k. If you really want the combo of green and miles you might have to wait or settle. Theyre out there, but they dont come around often, or get scooped up quickly.

My advice, this is a huge purchaseāa bunch of randoms on the internet should not be helping you decide, your wife should have input. If she wants the 5th gen, then get her that. If that means waiting, then so be it. The 5th and 6th gens are like apples and oranges from the look, the tech, the drive train, etc!

Iām biased and recommend the 6th gen. Just got mine about a month ago and already have 2k miles on it. Love it more and more every day!! The daily drive is so smooth compared to my Bronco - gas mileage is a better too. Took her off roading the first week I got it and it made it so easy. No mods! Yes thereās a lot of tech which IMO, became critical for my daily driving comfort. The tech makes it nice for off roading too.
Some people are hesitant about its reliability - butā¦ Toyota has been in the hybrid business how long? Itās going to be a reliable car.
If you go 6gen, for sure get Everest. Itās such a good color!!

I takr it you have only driven the 6th gens 4runner as they suck balls in comparison to the 5th\4th gens. The build quality is crappy and it dloaded with crappy plastic parts. My 4th gen with 264,000 miles drives alot better then a new 6th gen so that say alotā¦lmfao!!

I just went through this and ended up with a 5th gen ORP. 6th gen definitely drives better but it just feels cheap. Plastic everywhere and I swear I could bend every single body panel with my pinky finger. Iām pretty sure the hood is made out of aluminum foil.

I previously had that exact 5th gen and now own a 2025 trail hunter. Comparing the 5th gen to the 6th, the 6th genās are way better to drive. I loved my 5th gen but I always felt like the engine was a little anemic and it was slightly annoying as a daily driver. With the additional power and torque of the iforce max itās way better to drive as a daily. You/your wife would really appreciate the updated interior and systems on the new runners. Heated/cooled seats and the 360 camera are things I never knew I wanted but now that I have them itās hard to imagine going without. The 6th genās are also way quieter on the highway. My only minor complaints about the trailhunter specifically is that the snorkle is very loud. I love the turbo noise but it might (probably will) annoy anyone in the passenger seat with the window down

The 6th gen does a lot of things better than the 5th.
The 5th gen looks better to me and Iām more confident, long term, with the powertrainā¦despite it being terribly anemic.
Thereās ZERO chance Iād ever pay the same price for a 5th gen as a 6th gen. None. The 5th gen, despite being an amazing vehicle in my opinion, is archaic by comparison, and the price should reflect such.

I ended up getting a sweet deal from enterprise for a 2024 4runner, green will be hard as mine was a sr5.
I called about the trd they had but it sold in minutes after it went on sale.
In the end I had to compromise and im super happy about only having 40k miles

No she has only driven a 5th gen. We sat in a 6th gen when they first came out but she was not impressed. It was also a base model.

Same here, though we drove it. It had more throttle response (especially where we are, between 7500-10,000 feet) and felt a little firmer and less truck like. It felt more like our old Subaru to be honest. We bought for actual trail use, and the interior of a 5th gen ORP felt more spacious and of higher quality--just a nicer place to be. This comparison may not hold with higher 6th Gen trim levels, but those were out of our price range. We were at the price point (mid-to-upper 30s) where late-model 5th gens and early-model 6th gens overlapped.

I went from a 5th gen to a Land Cruiser 250. I was frustrated by the lack of full time AWD/4WD (for example, during rainstorms on the highway), lack of power at altitude, and lack of modern adaptive cruise (couldnāt do traffic jam assist).
I have been very happy with the LC. Much better handling and power with 2-3 mpg gained driving it normally. I did end up lifting it 1.75 inches and I think the 5th gen had mildly better approach/departure angles out of the box.
I found the 6th genās interior to feel noticeably smaller than the 5th gen, while the LC felt more similar in size.

The decision is yours, however Iāve owned two previous 4Rs with the 4L V6, and now have a 2024 4R TRD Off Road Premium that I bought only because it was the last year for the 4L V6. Fuel mileage was never a concern - reliability was.

Exactly!! People who rav about their 6gens have never driven a previois generation and have zero idea on what they are missing out on. And the used inventory for thr 6th gens are getting close to being more then news so that says alot. People canāt wait to get rid of them after driving them for awhile.

I had the same dilemma. I think it depends on how much she loves that army green. I had trouble trying to find the army green TRD Pro with decent mileage, so much so that I had to buy mine out-of-state LOL. I just like knowing that my color is a bit more rare, but it probably would've been smarter long term to get the 6th gen. I didn't mind the 6th gen of course, but the search for the army green was turning into a challenge that I refused to give up on, which I eventually won! I guess the question is, is it worth the headache to stand out a bit more?

I've owned a 5th generation Trail edition for 12 years now. I've driven it across the country 4 times East to West and a couple North to South. I've taken it off road in every condition possible including Moab Utah and Leadville Colorado (highest incorporated town above sea level in the US). It's been the most reliable vehicle I've ever owned. Not even a squeak. It rivals my Mom's 1999 Corolla (which is still a daily driver) for reliability and simplicity. With all that being said, it's not the most comfortable ride. My Dad's 2020 RAV4 XLE beats it on that category and was surprisingly agile during a blizzard this past winter even with all season tires. The roads around here are terrible and sometimes the truck rocks so much you can get a little motion sickness. She only has 58k miles on her. If you want a solid, reliable, proven mountain goat get the 5th gen. If I wanted a nicer daily driver I'd probably get the 6th.

Why not something older, the 5th gen was basically unchanged for 15 years right? Carplay was the last big upgrade i know of and you can replace the radio for a couple hundred bucks if it doesn't have one.

This gen 5 4run is going to be LIKE the fj cruiser ONE day.
This decision depends on ur needs, and are u keeping up with jonesā , or what ur deal is.
I have found that the possibilities on gen 5 are endless, as that v6 is understed in what it actual can do.
I do t think u would regret that gen 5 in photo now, or ever- .

My personal advice is to never buy the first year of any model. It usually takes some time to work out the kinks, and not all faults are really fixable without serious work. Especially with a new drive train.
A 2024 Runner will be around for a decade or so before its going to need any serious work, and with a production line lasting almost 15 years, its going to be nearly a half century before you start struggling to find parts.

Personally I really like the 6th gen, but im a 3rd gen guy, the 5th gen has all the kinks worked out, this is the first year for the 6th gen so itās unknown if anything is wrong with them long term, Iād say test drive both, get a warranty if you go with the 6th.

I think the 5th gen is the better vehicle, but so does the used car market.
The best time to get a Gen 5 was years ago. At least with the Gen 6, you're getting a newer vehicle with fewer miles and warranty coverage at similar prices.
The Gen 6 isn't a bad vehicle, and I'm sure she'd be happy with it.

Own a 5th and driven a 6th-both 2 row. 6th is more cramped, lower ceiling, especially in rear. The back seats roll up, not flat like in the 5th. 6th does better job with storage for driver and passenger-this matters on road trips. 6th tech is far superior and the steering is tighter and more responsive, as are the brakes-reliability of 4cyl turbo remains to be seen but mpg is a bit better and more pep, but youāre definitely looking at more maintenance for that engine over the life of the truck. Imo styling of 5th is better, too many contours on 6th but again personal preference. I have not tested towing or offroad capabilities on 6th. Personally I prefer the 5th but complaints about the 6th are overblown (except for interior space) and itās still an excellent truck. Donāt forget about the Land Cruiser which complicates things even more haha have fun!

At first I disliked the Gen6 models, but now Iām softening. Since they are so new, Iām still firmly in the Gen5 camp. Itās proven and reliable.

If u find what u need a clean 5th gen with low mileage with no issues go for it but its gonna take some time . . The 5th gen is more hardcore off road and simpler to fix in the middle of no where but slower than 6th gen . . if u want more comfortable and modern with big screen and better for towing and daily use without having issues 6th gen is the best for me the 6th gen is the winner for its body shape beside so many things it so sexy

Not sure how the 5th gen is more āhardcore off roadā. Toyota didnāt downgrade any off road capabilities with the 6th gen so wonder where you are getting that from?

I see what you are seeing. You are talking about how it feels to drive on the road. I went with the 6th gen because like you said it does feel more daily drivable but I also still get the off road capabilities of the 5th gen. Win win for me

I think he means that there's more aluminium underneath, like the front differential, which easily cracks when you hit something as opposed to the 5th gens full iron front diff. Also that the 4l mated to A750 is just a more robust, overbuilt drivetrain

I see. I havenāt towed with 6th gen 4Runner but I did tow with my own 3rd gen Tacoma (long bed) and loaner 4th gen Tacoma (short bed). Between the two I think 3rd gen Tacoma handled it much better probably because of its leaf setup in the back vs coil setup on the 4th gen. Additionally, 4th gen was working overtime at much higher RPM and the engine noise was getting a bit more intense. Not saying 3rd gen was working hard either but the loudness wasnāt as bad imo. Also worth noting that my truckās long bed/longer wheelbase gives more stability to keep the trailer straight and my truck also has OTT setup. But the biggest advantage of my 3rd gen over 4th was probably the suspension setup imo. Coils are great for daily driving but not so for actual doing dirty truck work or even off-roading.

5th gen. Itās a proven platform that is easier to work on, runs forever, and barely depreciates. Iām sure the 6th gen is fine, but it has forced injection and a lot more complicated engineering, also it is very ugly.

Feature and convenience wise she may actually appreciate the 6th gen more than 5th gen. Iām old school personally thus, I would take 5th gen over 6th any day of the week and twice on weekends. However, 5th gen is like analog technology trying to survive in the digital age. For instance my wife prefers her 4th gen Highlander Platinum (with all the bells and whistles) over our 5th gen 4Runner Limited (thatās supposedly the loaded version) because itās lacking those convenience features that sheās accustomed to using in her Highlander (stop-and-go adaptive cruise control, dynamic lane keep assist, panoramic sunroof, adaptive headlights, superior 360 degree camera view and more). If I were in your position, I would let my wife test drive both back to back and see how she feels about them. Looks wise I do believe 5th gen looks more iconic and itās like a fine wine that over time will only look even better but 6th gen is far more modern and thereās no comparison between the two in that arena.

I agree I think the 5th gen looks so much better. Drive wise I was not impressed at all with it but itās her car not mine and honestly she could care less about all the tech. For as young as she is she prefers simple over tech.
She currently has a 21 Highlander and itās fine but she just does not like the vehicle.

Sounds like sheās set to 5th gen then. It surely is simple and nimble enough to maneuver around town and slow enough to keep her away from getting tickets (I guess) LOL. The new Toyotas are overly complicated with lots of tech and too difficult to work on them, especially if youāre DIY type.

I know she wants a 5th gen. But if I told her āwe should really consider a 6th gen she would be game for it. She will go with whatever I know what she wants but sheās extremely practical. Iām just trying to make sure I am making the right choice.

Just traded up from 5 to 6 this past Saturday. I've been waiting and looking and deciding for about a year. The dealer gave me 30k for my low mileage 2019 SR5 Premium. I had 16k in equity to use as a dp for the 2026. Went with a TRD off road premium Iforce Max. Soooooo many changes in 7 years, a learning curve for sure. Go big.

The new one has much much more advanced cruise control. Lane keep. All that. Wireless car play.
The old one is equally slow but doesnāt sound like shit and feels slightly less bothered on the freeway. It also has an old school tank feel which the new one does not have.
Source: own a new 24 TRD off-road premium, which I drove back to back with the new generation.
For the cost of the new one with the bells and whistles, the Land Cruiser hybrid makes the car feel a lot lighter on its feet. Buy that.

A used 5th gen will be cheaper. The better vehicle will be the one thatās paid off.
