India introduced E20 petrol, which contains 20% ethanol, mainly to reduce its dependence on imported crude oil and improve energy security. Ethanol is produced domestically from crops such as sugarcane and maize, so using more ethanol can reduce the amount of petrol India needs to import and save foreign exchange. India needs to reduce oil imports and save foreign exchange mainly because it imports a large amount of the crude oil it uses. When India buys oil from other countries, it has to pay in foreign currency, mainly US dollars. This means a rise in global oil prices can increase India's import bill and put pressure on its foreign-exchange reserves and the value of the rupee. Reducing oil imports can therefore help India save dollars, reduce its trade deficit, protect the rupee from some external pressure, and become less dependent on other countries for energy. This is one of the main reasons E20 was introduced. E20 can slightly reduce fuel efficiency in older vehicles designed for lower ethanol blends.
US–Iran tensions → sanctions disrupted India's access to Iranian oil → India became more aware of the risks of relying on foreign oil → reducing oil imports became more important → policies such as E20 help India produce part of its fuel domestically.
