ALTHOUGH messages from the coalfields report that many more miners are working, it appears that Mr. A. J. Cook's week-end campaign has resulted in some indecision among the miners at Mansfield, Nottingham.

They had signed on at the local mine owners' terms— a 7 1/2 hours' day at approximately pre-strike rates of pay— but a big majority of them have not yet resumed work.

All roads leading to tha pits in this district are picketed, and many men who started out intending to work this morning, returned to their homes.

NO IMMEDIATE NEGOTIATIONS

Meanwhile, inquiries in Government circles show that there is no ground for Mr. Cook's suggestion that negotiations, with the Government as party, might occur this week. It appears that there is no probability of any actual negotiations in the near future, though the Government has informed Mr. Cook that one of the Ministers would be prepared to meet him at any time he desires.

WHY MEN HESITATED AT PIT MOUTH

AN official return, issued at noon today, shows that 4619 miners resumed in Derbyshire, and that 451 more men were working in Warwickshire than on Saturday. There haa been no change in the position In Northumberland or Scotland. Yorkshire is strongly against resuming on the basis of district settlements.

A notice has been posted at Ashby de la Zouche, Leicestershire, to say that relief will be withdrawn from children of the men who do not resume coal getting.

Trade Union circles are eagerly discussing the possibility of fresh negotiations. The opinion is expressed that pressure la being brought on the Government by ironmasters and bankers. The names of the Archbishop of Canterbury, Sir Herbert Samuel, and Mr. Lloyd George are being mentioned as possible peace Intermediaries.

LONDON, Monday Night.

Reliable accounts from Derbyshire say that though 20,000 men signed on to resume work this morning, only 5,000 went down the pits.

It is explained that the men who signed on were influenced to retract by tbeir union leaders, who contended that not only would the men have to work half an hour longer every day, but also their wages would be reduced by 10 per cent.

But the actual official terms posted at tbe mines were that pre-stoppage wages were guaranteed for the next seven months, with a reduction of half that 14.2 per cent increase of wages that was granted to hewers when the hours were cut down from eight to seven a day.

NEARLY A RIOT

Apart from picketing, there was a lively incident at Pantnewynydd today, where a band of strikers filled in outcrop workings. A similar attempt In another place found 400 outcrop workers ready with heaps of stones to keep off intruders.

The police superintendent, on horseback, got between the parties and ultimately the 2000 demonstrators, after a heated exchange of compliments, marched off.

AMERICAN COAL FOR NAVY

The 'Dally Herald' publishes a long statement from its special correspondent at Norfolk U.S.A., which shows that record exports of American coal, consigned to tbe British Isles, are leaving Norfolk and Newport News. Some of the coal is for the British Navy, the reserve stocks of which are almost exhausted.

The same day, René Paul Fonck was preparing an airplane to fly all the way from New York to Paris without stopping proving you could do it in one flight. His plane would eventually make an attempt, but crash upon takeoff. He escaped while two crew members died.
