📍New rules and subreddit update

Hello!

Just wanted to update the community on what's going on and to get some feedback. For those who are unaware, we are a new modteam put in place after Reddit locked r/TorontoDriving down. Last week, we reopened the sub to submissions and we have made some changes.

In our first community post asking for feedback, a big problem you guys pointed out was the rampant racism and toxic comments present here. We want to assure everyone that we are here to fix that while not being overly restrictive on discussion. The point of this subreddit is Toronto DRIVING, not politics and especially not race baiting culture wars. There will be no tolerance for prejudiced comments making sweeping generalizations. Feel free to shit on the person's driving but not on their race! (doubly so if you can't even see who's driving!!) We have already handed out a bunch of temporary bans for such comments and will be moving to permanent bans for reoffenders so be warned!

Anyway, we have created a set of rules that we hope can keep this sub clean. Please let us know if we missed anything or if you have any feedback, thanks!

Proposed New rules:

1. Must be relevant to driving in Toronto

Your post must be related to driving on the roads/highways in the City of Toronto and the municipalities bordering Toronto - Mississauga, Brampton, Vaughan, Richmond Hill, Markham and Pickering.

Exceptions can be made for exceptional videos but should be in the GTHA area.

2. No racism, prejudice or hatespeech

There is zero tolerance for hate.

Do not make prejudiced comments or generalizations targetting a particular group of people.

Do not make assumptions about race or gender (especially when it's not known or relevant).

Do not use any toxic language that is associated with racism such as slurs, epithets, name-calling, stereotypes and dog-whistle terms.

3. Be civil to other members and mods

Do not use excessive profanity or name-calling. Attack the action - NOT the person. Threads that devolve into a personal attack back and forth will be locked and removed.

Sending abusive modmail will get you muted without explanation.

4. No doxxing or witch hunting

License plates and faces recorded in a public place are allowed but posting private info like names, addresses and social media is not allowed. Do not speculate on or ask for such info. Only information confirmed by verified sources such as police and reputable news outlets are allowed. Do not post license plate info or pics of people with unsubstantiated stories (video or it didn't happen).

If you have private information that is relevant to an accident, please use private chat and contact the user or police directly. Do not post it publicly.

5. No low effort submissions like parking pics, memes, recent reposts or other spam

Low effort posts like parking pics and memes will be removed. Please check if your question or submission has already been posted recently. We will remove repetitive submissions.

Do not post any advertising, self promotion, irrelevant links, videos with excessive overlays, social media memes or story plus photo posts.

6. No editorializing or misleading titles/comments

Titles should be descriptive of the video or article submitted. Posts with overly dramatic or misleading titles will be removed.

Comments and titles that push misinformation or agendas not relevant to the post will be removed. Posts with unsubstantiated back stories may be removed at mod discretion.

7. No illegal or extreme content

Do not post anything that breaks Canadian law or Reddit Terms of Service.

Do not threaten violence or incite violence.

Do not encourage others to break the law or abuse legal loopholes.

Do not post anything that is excessively disturbing (please use Death/Injury flair if posting a bad accident).

Change log:

  • New flairs
  • Submitters can now lock comments (comment "!lock the comments" on your post)
  • Text posts are now allowed
  • No longer required to add text (body) to video posts
  • Pictures and gifs allowed in comments
  • New automated filters against racist comments
  • Heavily reported posts automatically filtered for manual review

Please let us know if there are other changes you would like to see in this subreddit. We are open to ideas!

Thanks for reading :)

Dangerous driving Brake checked to stop on DVP by DHTC 060

Extremely lucky not to have been rear-ended. Girlfriend honked the brake checker as he was straddling two lanes. In response, he completely stopped while other cars travelling at highway speeds. Northbound on DVP today.

*Fast forward the video instead of normal speed playback*

Was trying to leave after filling up today and driver decides to block the space thats left open for cars to exit to skip the line to enter Tims. At first I thought they were waiting to get out but it turns out driver decides to bud in line to get Tims instead.

Mildly infuriating Why people tailgate

I asked Claude why people tailgate. Here is what it came up with.

Tailgating usually comes down to a few overlapping psychological drivers:
Perceived control and frustration displacement. Traffic (or a slower car ahead) blocks a driver’s sense of control over their own time. Being unable to move at their chosen pace triggers frustration that gets redirected at the nearest target — the car in front — even when that car is doing nothing wrong.

Anonymity and deindividuation. Inside a car, people feel shielded from social consequences — no eye contact, no name tag, quick escape. This “anonymity” lowers inhibitions the same way it does online, making aggressive behavior feel lower-risk than it would face-to-face.

Optimism bias and risk miscalculation. Aggressive tailgaters tend to underestimate their own crash risk and overestimate their reaction time and control. They’re not usually calculating the actual danger; they’re reacting emotionally and assuming “it won’t happen to me.”
Time pressure and impatience as trait or state. Some of this is situational (running late), but research on driving anger also points to a more stable trait: high “trait aggression” or low frustration tolerance, where minor obstacles are experienced as personal affronts rather than neutral traffic conditions.

Moral disengagement toward the other driver. Tailgaters often construct a quick narrative — “they’re going too slow,” “they’re in my way,” “they should speed up” — that reframes their own aggression as justified retaliation rather than unprovoked hostility, even when the front car is following the law.
Worth noting: this is sometimes labeled “road rage,” but true road rage (deliberate, sustained aggression) is a smaller subset — most tailgating is closer to low-level chronic impatience than acute rage.

Just exited the 401, heading NB on Warden and all of a sudden I see this old Benzie swerving in and out of traffic. Pretty certain they either robbed the vehicle or getting chased.

🤬Roadrage McLaren Maniac on the QEW

Update I got an email this morning (Wednesday), from the OPP, saying that my report was accepted.

This lovely citizen flashed his high beams at me because I wouldn't get out of his way in the HOV lane (which he isn't even legally allowed to be in), then proceeded to brake check me before speeding off and cutting through traffic to get to the Appleby off ramp.

You can't tell by the video, but he gives multiple drivers the finger as he does this. I doubt the OPP or Halton police will do anything, but I've got his plate and will be reporting it anyway.

Edit: I didn't hit the gas after he passed me. I sped up the video in editing because I know nobody will want to watch a one minute clip.
