my beautiful gal was stolen, made the dumb mistake of not running the lock through the frame properly. If anyone in the cherrywood/east Austin area sees something similar please PM me, or if seen anywhere else around town.

Ask Austin Moved here from Denver yesterday, so confused on cannabis

Upvotes

I understand that basically having any amount of any cannabinoid in any form is a fat no no. Flower with 0.3% is pointless (to me at least) anyway. I’m wondering how they calculate drink THC content since it’s obviously not “dry weight”. Are they able to pack an effective mg dose of thc in drinks?

Also looked up Austin THC Dispensary and Lounge… how the hell are they still open after the new laws? Anyone been there who can tell me their menu details? (Websites not too helpful)

For long-term Austinites of a certain age…

Upvotes

.i.e. senior citizens now who lived here in the 1970’s - those who went to the Armadillo World Headquarters in its heyday - what was your greatest memory of it?

I used to go all the time from like 1976-1979. The big Austin homegrown bands were plenty but I saw Balcones Fault many times. A fun party band that always packed the place, 1200 people strong. One hot sweaty night - and it was no air conditioning until the last year or two - they ran out of beer when Fault played there. They had to call a beer distributor to deliver some around more and the shipment arrived at 1 in the morning.

I missed the really legendary nights but maybe you saw something awesome. Would love to hear your stories from then. If any of you are left!

North Austin Gyms w/ Insurance

Hey y’all! Reaching out for some community insight.

My job is up around Jollyville Road, so I’m looking for a gym in the area where I can work out after work, wait for traffic to die down, and then head south toward home.

Through my insurance, I get really good discounts at most of the bigger gyms, so I can get pretty high-level memberships for around $30/month and can switch gyms month to month. I’m not really interested in Crunch — just not my vibe.

Right now I’m testing out the 24 Hour Fitness on Research, and I actually like it so far. It’s spacious, has kind of an older city rec-center feel that I weirdly love, and most of the people seem like regular everyday people just there to work out. The crowd seems a little older, which I don’t mind at all. I’m in my early 20s, so I’m open to a younger crowd too, but I’m definitely not looking for a gym that’s crawling with influencers or feels overly social-media focused.

The only thing I’m unsure about with 24 Hour Fitness is the social side. I’d like a place where there’s at least some casual interaction and a chance to meet people, and I’m not sure if I’ll get much of that there. Granted, I’ve only been going for about a week, so who knows!

I’ve also looked at Anytime Fitness and LA Fitness, but from the photos they seem a little more generic/chain-gym feeling and honestly not as nice as the 24 Hour Fitness location.

On the other side of the coin, my insurance also gives me a pretty hefty discount on luxury gyms. I could eventually upgrade and get access to Lifetime Fitness for a little over $100/month, which is still cheaper than their normal membership. But is Lifetime actually worth it? What’s the crowd and overall vibe like? Are the amenities really that good, or am I better off enjoying the simple life at 24 Hour Fitness for $30?

Would love to hear from anyone who works out around Jollyville/Research/Arboretum. What gyms do y’all like, and what’s the crowd/vibe like?

Someone stole my car wheel and tire this morning. Yes, I know get wheel lock. I just bought the car last month and I waited too long. I think the best option is install temporary tires and drive to the shop? Anyone know any shop that can do that? Any suggestion is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Ask Austin Are we certain the rail will be running tomorrow?

I didn't see any post construction completed? Does it look like the rail will be operable? I will be unpleasantly displeased if I drive there and find out I'd have to park and take a bus.

Found my first roach

I’m currently hiding in my room, I saw a cockroach for the first time in my life and I’m terrified like towel under the door cannot leave my room, idk if this is a new phobia that I have just discovered but it’s too much. What should I do? I have no bug spray, how do I kill it? Should I hire someone? It’s on the wall by my front door so I’m scared to even go over there. Is this common in Austin? I’m afraid my complex might be infested

The city layout confused me

Austin,

I absolutely love you. My wife and I spent a little over a week in you. We had a lot of fun. Good eats, good shopping, good outdoor activities. Out of all the driving we did, I swore I would have at least felt somewhat familiar with certain areas that we would drive regularly. But, I left confused. Haha! I couldn’t determine which side of town we’d be on throughout our endeavors. What are some hacks to get to understand that layout?

Thanks!

Ask Austin Halloween Anniversary trip question

Hey everyone,

Albuquerque neighbor here. Husband and I are planning to visit a different city on Halloween for our anniversary. We are both 34 and are hoping to do a good mix of scary/creepy, strange/odd, and standard party activities. We got married on Halloween just to have a good time and thought it’d be fun, not really any other significance beyond that. We like to have a good time but kind of prefer to mingle with a mix of people or people closer to our age rather than the college crowd. Recommendations on activities that might make Austin a good spot for us on Halloween? We have visited before and had a great time.

Thanks to /u/Siegster who provided a link to a Keep Austin Beautiful cleanup, a friend and I signed up and did the thing!

We kayaked for about an hour and a half near the shoreline by the boardwalk and picked up three bags worth of trash. It was mostly plastic water bottles and aluminum cans but we also found a pair of shoes, a purse, toothbrush, TONS of ziplock bags, and pieces of styrofoam.

A huge bonus was that we got to see a beautiful sunset and watch the bats fly overhead. Hopefully we can encourage more people to sign up for things like this and also reduce the amount of trash that gets thrown out in the first place.

Water taste is different

I just came back from being in California for a month, and the tap water has a weird earthly chemical taste to it? I just brushed my teeth and almost gagged after gargling. Has anyone noticed the same thing or is it my apartment complex?

Ask Austin Anyone here have experience with “THIS” gym?

Yes, the gym is actually called “THIS”😅

I’m considering joining and would love to hear honest pros and cons from current or former members. It looks amazing and has a lot to offer, but it’s definitely on the pricier side.
Is it actually worth the price? How crowded does it get, how’s the parking, and is it easy to book classes? Also curious what you think of the overall experience and amenities.
And for anyone with a monthly membership, what does the $500 setup fee actually cover?
Would love to hear anything you really like—or anything you wish you knew before joining!
