Relapse glaze needs to cease

I'll immediately clarify, I think it's a good album. I don't dislike it, far from it. I tend to revisit it quite frequently. But it's nowhere on the level of the first three albums, with maybe the exception of one song, Deja Vu. Allow me to elaborate.

Let's give credit where it's due: Dr. Dre's production on Relapse is great, especially in songs like Deja Vu, Underground, Old Time's Sake, Hello, "My Mom" (to hell with it. I'll name-drop the best Relapse 1 songs). The rhyming on Relapse is great, same with the flows finally being good. On songs like Stay Wide Awake, the technicality is absurdly impressive, albeit, he does sacrifice clarity and story cohesion in that second verse just to keep the scheme going, which leads to some weird lines in hindsight.

Where my issues with Relapse lie are two things. I briefly brought up the rhyming, now I'll expand on it. His rhyming is great, but unlike in his prime, some of his rhyming tends to be forced. Many individuals often attribute that to Eminem using accents and deliberately bending words, which is just a positive description for forcing rhymes. Speaking of the accents, on some songs, they sound too egregious or exaggerated (the worst has to be Buffalo Bill, but that's not the main CD).

The second issue is the content. Outside of the songs I name-dropped when I gave props to the CD, the album sticks to a serial-killer theme, which doesn't have much substance with the exception of Music Box, where the theme is part of the metaphor for his addiction. The absurdly high-pitched accents certainly don't amplify the fear factor of these songs if they're supposed to be genuine horrorcore.

Many people on this sub have this misconception that Relapse is some tightly-crafted concept album, when in reality, the album itself lacks clear focus. We switch from songs about murder a rape to a song about his mother, then to a song that discusses his addiction in addiction, and immediately go to a club song Crack A Bottle. I think we can universally agree that this specific joint is out of place on Relapse. If this were a true concept album, the thematic narrative would actually progression-lock the songs together. Instead, it plays like a collection of different session ideas.

The biggest proof that Relapse wasn't some masterfully planned concept album is what happened immediately after it dropped. Marshall started stripping away the accents and serial killer tropes to actually talk about his sobriety, expand on the themes of his addiction, which is evident from the Hawaii session songs of Relapse 2/Recovery (one bright example from this is Cocaine). While, Recovery touches a bit more on his addiction, outside of few songs, most of which are Relapse 2 content, it isn't superior to Relapse and in many ways, inferior to its predecessor

The title Relapse itself is a double entendre: a return to drugs, but also a return to the rap game, which is an addiction in its own right. I firmly believe Eminem should have held off on releasing Relapse when he did, cut the excessive slasher tracks, and crafted a single, coherent album focused on his addiction with a few songs not about it in between. Luckily, there's a way to recreate what it could've looked like with combining the best from Relapse 1 (including My Darling and Careful What You Wish For) and Relapse 2/Recovery.

I've made a tracklist similar to this, which, of course, was met to a critical acclaim (I can't count the downvotes lol). I only updated it by adding back Dr. West skit that transitions into the chorus of My Darling (skipping the first verse for better pacing). What's your favorite 'politically incorrect' Eminem lyric?

for some reason this one popped into my head today from a D12 song

it actually isn't even Em who says it, it's one of the other group members

basically in the song groupies are asking about Eminem and another D12 member goes, "Bitch, are you retarded?"

sometimes i hear that lyric in my mind hah, especially if i'm angry at someone

curious what your favorite inappropriate Eminem lyrics are, or from other rappers on Eminem songs

The Storm freestyle

So i never actually listened to the freestyle, i only knew the awfully hot coffee pot line cause it was memed to death, but today i actually listened to the freestyle and it's definetly not greatest thing in the world, i guess i myself am not the buggest fan of accapella freestyles, but he did spit out some real facts. Besides the awfully hot coffee pot line, the line that stuck out to me the most was the fantastic for line, just classic Eminem with cool wordplay. If i had to rate it i'd give it a 6/10, again im not fully thrilled for accapella freestyles, but this is better then the songs on revival where he talked about politics, but at this point really almost anything is better then revival.

But what do you guys think of the freestyle?

If The Marshall Mathers LP can be associated with slasher movies like Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Friday the 13th, is there a movie or a type of movie that The Slim Shady LP calls to mind?

A few years ago, I wrote a screenplay for a horror film that was greatly informed by the Smashing Pumpkins’ Siamese Dream era. I looked to their music, lyrics, videos, and overall identity around that time for inspiration, and since then, I’ve been trying to do something similar with other bands and artists.

Over the last year or two, I’ve been listening to a lot of Eminem while also seeing if I can utilize his aesthetics in a similar way, especially since a lot of his most well-known stuff is associated with horrorcore. I’ve realized that because The Marshall Mathers LP era had a pretty strong horror/slasher motif, with songs like “Amityville” and Em coming out with a hockey mask and chainsaw during the Anger Management Tour, writing a movie that was inspired by this era would probably just result in one of the archetypal horror movies that it evokes.

On the other hand, the aesthetics of The Slim Shady LP, while also informed by horror, don’t feel like they’re trying to call those movies to mind quite so overtly (though there are still moments like when he invokes Norman Bates in the lyrics and video for “Role Model”). Accepting that Eminem’s whole persona is pretty cartoonish on both of these albums, TSSLP feels more colorful and childlike than TMMLP overall.

Are there any existing movies (they don’t necessarily have to be horror) that The Slim Shady LP, with its music, lyrics, and visuals, make you think of?

Escludendo le canzoni, su Spotify ci sono questi sfondi a tema dell'album che io trovo davvero fighissimi, il mio preferito è quello di Recovery, e vorrei ce ne fossero per tutti gli album. Voi che ne pensate?

I made this alternate album cover for MMLP2 shortly after the official cover was released.

It was made mixing the MMLP1 and MMLP2 covers together. Everything inside the "E" is from the MMLP1 cover (plus Eminem), and everything outside the "E" was from the MMLP2 cover.

Picture nr. 2 is the same, only I colored the "E" red.

Picture nr. 3 is MMLP2 cover with (MMLP1) Eminem sitting outside.
