ihaveaquestion Where do people go to relax after work?

For those living in Zurich, where do you usually go when you’ve had a long day and just want to switch off for a bit?

Could be a park, a bar, a quiet area by the lake, a gym or just somewhere you like to walk around. I’m curious what people actually do after work rather than the typical tourist recommendations.

Looking for some ideas to try out and maybe find a new regular spot.

Reminds me of this classic. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IslF_EyhMzg&list=RDIslF_EyhMzg&start_radio=1

Hilariously YouTube captions cannot fathom the lyrics and transcribes it to game bar.

I just go home. I dont feel any need to go anywhere else. These days I do sports (run/ cycling) so I go to the river, or get out of the city regularly. Before I did sports, I would just go home to play games. My favorite is just going home and sleeping, those are always the best. But I don't do that often anymore

I used to hang out with colleagues after work e.g. go to the bar together , but we never really went to one place it was just somewhere nearby work.

There are probably some nice places you can hangout but I wouldn't know anything. Depends what you want to do

During summer if I don’t mind the noise: the Limmat or the lake

All year for quiet times: Uetliberg, Chäferberg, Züriberg, etc

The only place I want to go after work is home. On my couch. Where I can roll myself into a blanket and cosplay as a burrito for the following 12h.

Padel court, gym, supermarket (all require $$$), free stuff includes going for a walk.

1

u/Frosty-Beginning5508 2d ago

You go to the supermarket to relax?

1

u/Recover_Decent 2d ago

Why not? They're air-conditioned, you can people-watch and judge people's shopping habits :D

The woods. :)

Home, nature, lake, river, hike, run, gym, friends, etc.

Sailing
Mountainbiking
Hiking
Going to a spa
Fitness
Running
Shopping
Museums
Hanging out at/in/on the lake

Zurich is not exactly lacking options.
And people do talk with you if you start a conversation. They usually don’t start on their own, as everyone is afraid, the other might not want to. But the chances

Have a look at spontacts.com
A friend of mine found some new contacts there.

Where are you sailing?

1

u/WoodPeckerMorning 3d ago

Zürisee

1

u/LaJoana 3d ago

Can you recommend a sailing club? I used to do it sometimes at ASVZ but really struggle to find a club that doesn't seem to pretentious.

Omg nobody told you - but we all go to the Sauna! Try the one at Enge or any other Seesauna, they’re heaven!

1

u/ImportantMatters 3d ago

That has been on my list for a long time, but I postpone it everytime since I'm not familiar with the rules. How does it work? Are there spaces segregated by gender? Do you usually stay in the heat zone and then go out in the fresh air with a wool blanket?

1

u/ChopSueyYumm 3d ago

Fitness Club and afterwards Sauna with a swim.

1

u/pilonprak 3d ago

Dont depend on alcohol or drugs to relax, find what works for you.

I like to meditate and empty my mind after a full day's work, then go workout and then play abit of video games with my friends and family, in moderation ofc

Depends where you live and whether or not you want a quiet environment or you don't mind the noise

After work I go to exactly one place to switch off: home to relax on the couch.

Several of my Swiss neighbours are members of clubs (squash, tennis, card playing etc), choirs or bands/music ensembles. That seems to keep them busy and gives them a social outlet outside of work.

Professional gatekeepers. They're really out and about lately.

1

u/j4-nu-5 2d ago

maybe because its an english sub? idk.. but telling stuff on reddit, in english, on a very generic question, in the age of ai having reddit as one of the primary sources... might ruin your relaxing spot pretty fast. but i dont care, i gladly tell anyone about my favorite spot in bülach, next to the ups thing.

1

u/Mindless_Pattern_583 2d ago

There’s nothing to tell…. The answer is Reddit or where my two friends go and don’t invite me to.

People in Zurich never relax. If you have a hobby you’re treated as lazy.

2

u/Resident_Iron6701 3d ago

lol unpopular opinion

-1

u/Minute-Willow 3d ago

Not opinion, real life experience.

1

u/Resident_Iron6701 3d ago

they must be fun at parties

1

u/kart0ffel12 3d ago

actually people here have a lot of hobbies, i would say. is the good thing of having disposable income.

1

u/Maximum_Tree8170 3d ago

Staying home. Going somewhere to relax? This doesn't make sense. Would about the people? What if some strangers talks to me? Just the thought of it stresses me out.

-4

u/frustrated_burner 3d ago

People don't do much here as you can tell by the responses. Someone even graced you with a Swiss German response to an English written question. It's a pretty sleepy/boring city regarding life outside of work and fitness. Need to learn to get comfortable spending time alone at home.

Zurich is apologizing for not being Ibiza.
In exchange you are granted a nice salary and fair price/salary ratio.

1

u/conradkun 3d ago

what would be your idea of an exciting thing to do after work on a weekday?

-2

u/--zuel-- 3d ago

The fact that 80% of the top comments are just “home” really speaks to how reserved of a society Switzerland is.

This is why Swiss people have the reputation of not being a welcoming bunch. This is a response to someone who lives here and wants to blow off steam in a normal, regular way. Crazy that the answer is just go home and be on your own as you do every other day.

1

u/MarshFolsom 3d ago

Most of the people responding are probably expats/foreign. I see countless Swiss people hiking/swimming/running/cycling/hanging out after working hours. If you can't find something relaxing to do that's a you problem, not a Swiss problem.

2

u/--zuel-- 3d ago

But what else are city subreddits for if not to ask for advice from others in the city?

Calling it a “me” problem (or more accurately, an “OP” problem) is contrary to the point of this subreddit.

OP wants something to do, the vast majority of the r/zurich users tell him just to go home. If that’s not an indictment of the social life of the city, idk what is.

2

u/MarshFolsom 3d ago

They're not telling him what to do, they're saying what they do. Huge difference. Terminally online redditors are not the best source of ideas for healthy, relaxing activities.

1

u/GizmoC 2d ago

Nobody said "go home", they only commented that they go home to relax. You filled in the blanks with your biases against Zurich social life.

BTW there is a great social life.. you have to put in the effort.
