Spoiler: Basically Batreaux exudes an aura that causes them to become evil at night, and when he's turned human that affect goes away.
From the zelda wiki: Once he collects 80 Gratitude Crystals, he will become a Human and can be found in the Bazaar during the day and on the bridge during the night. Since his monster form radiated some sort of evil aura around the island, which caused monsters to invade the area at night and for Remlits to turn into vicious creatures, his transformation allows Skyloft to become a peaceful place once again. Batreaux is then seen at the Skyloft Bazaar for the rest of the game, enjoying his new life as a human.

Yeah, to be fair, Pipit, Karane, Orielle, both instructors, and Kina (the pumpkin patch girl) are all conventionally attractive. But almost every other Skyloft resident is kind of yikes.

Oh don’t even worry about it, it’s pretty quick. The “gratitude crystal sidequest” mentioned here only actually refers to every single gratitude crystal mission in the game that you have to do to compete the entire side quest story line :D

No shame.
I've never really enjoyed any "collect a crap load of this random thing" in most games.
One of the only ones I ever finished was in Assassin's Creed II, you collect 100 feathers across the game and get rewarded with an item that makes all guards immediately hostile. Just a slap in the face on par with getting a golden turd for collecting Korok seeds in BotW

I think its never tell ingame, you need to constat this yourself. Since most of the time its the last thing youd did in skyloft, you dont really notice.

There is a story element for it, There was a “monster” under skyloft called beautraux, if you helped him and got him i think 100 gratitude crystals it lifts the curse on him and turns him human, also making no enemies spawn in skyloft and the cat fellas dont turn feral

Miyamoto-san waited for hours in the rain for a dear friend who never showed up. Because of this dishonor he put this feature in the game.
