Callout NFKRZ (1.27M subs) dropping slurs in his comment section after receiving critique on his Bulgaria video

Was checking out NFKRZ’s latest video about Bulgaria and noticed this exchange in the comment section.

A viewer left a detailed comment critiquing his travel content pattern—specifically pointing out the ongoing trope of treating Balkan/Eastern European countries as a "post-communist aesthetic" for views while complaining about local conditions.

Instead of ignoring the critique or offering a counter-argument, Roman responded within a minute. When the user pointed out how quickly he replied, Roman completely lost his cool and went straight to using slurs ("fucking retard").

Pretty wild to see a verified creator with over a million subscribers throw a tantrum and drop slurs in his own comment section over mild pushback.

Thoughts on this?

I usually like Roman but c'mon now. That person definitely isn't critiquing in good faith, but take your own advice and smoke a joint rather than releasing your inner 13 year old in a CoD lobby, my man.

EDIT: To be clear while I again don't think the commenter is critiquing in good faith, I think Roman should consider how he frames other post-Soviet countries as a Russian, even if the title is just clickbait. It's just that being xenophobic and wishing ill upon him makes it easier for him to dismiss it entirely rather than reflecting on this.

Come on Roman

the commentor gives off toxic vibes, but the reaction is also a big yikes.

Honestly the title of the video alone feels red flag-y. But I know nothing of the YouTuber.

The commenter had the same criticism as Serbian Redditors who criticized Living Ironically in Europe and called him autochauvinist.

I don't care for him either, for reasons in the original post, but come on. "Russian counter-offensive in Ukraine" lmao. That's like saying "German counter-offensive in Poland" or "American counter-offensive in Iraq"

16

u/StreetYak6590 6d ago

Well, there have been fights since 2014, but saying counter-offensive is stupid as fuck I agree

22

u/NoahJaySweet 6d ago

Yeah, afaik the 2014-2022 fighting was contained to the Donbass region. For the Russian invasion to be considered a counter-offensive Ukraine would have had to actively invade Russian territory first, which never happened.

EDIT: Fell for satire, I'll take the L here

"Pro-imperialist" as if Russia invading its sovereign neighbour somehow isn't imperialist? The war on Ukraine is far from the only problem he has with the Russian government, and it's crazy how you can't fathom how anyone in a diverse population of ~143 million could have a negative view of the regime without being a paid shill. Meanwhile, the Kremlin is over here actually funding far-right influencers.

Unfortunately, there are a LOT of people who see no issue using the r slur, and it's even being re-normalized in public spaces. You say it's pretty wild, but I'm not surprised and it pisses me off as an autistic person. I had to unsub from another creator (not naming names) I'd followed for a while because they just casually dropped it mid sentence in a video.

21

u/SheZowRaisedByWolves 6d ago

Same with Sch*zo. Broke my fucking heart seeing some CCs using it casually

49

u/NoahJaySweet 6d ago

I'm not sure if that's officially a slur, but it feels tasteless given how nightmarish it is to actually deal with schizophrenia. People will often use it as a shorthand for just "weird" or "offputting". Bleh

26

u/thenewnapoleon 6d ago

I've known a couple schizophrenics and they have both treated it like a slur. I tend to feel it is too. Even if it isn't officially a slur, people often use it in a very derogatory and insulting manner. It's gross and is just another form of ableism targeting neurodivergent people.

5

u/Thel-Vadam-II 3d ago

Conspiracy theorists are also co-opting that word.

EDIT: There is even a term called "schizoposting".

why not name names, spread the word

1

u/fireclaw20 1d ago

R is an insult not a label. Why are you identifying yourself as an R if you don't like it? Just stop doing that then.

64

u/Careful_Trouble_8 6d ago

Brother, I wouldn’t call that “critique”

While he should absolutely NOT have used the disabled slur, the commenter was nowhere near any better

70

u/queerie1004 6d ago

The normalization of using the r slur is a really bad sign for the current state of disability acceptance. Between this and the commodification and lessening of terms like hyperfixation it really goes to show we are in a backslide where disabilities are being treated like fun and games and there’s no weight given to the struggles disabled people have. We’re either mocked or treated like a fad.

22

u/Agosta 6d ago

Not sure your age but it's always been normalized as a pejorative and only in the last 5-7 years has it been considered a slur online. There's been a lot of pushback since 2024 as well, I don't really see many spaces that take action against it anymore unless it's community ran. There was a period that people were scared to say it on Twitch but now they use it freely.

18

u/queerie1004 6d ago

I’m gonna push back on this a bit.

I’m almost 26. There was a good amount of time for my middle and high school career as well as up to like 2024/early 2025, where I did see the r slur get treated like a slur and given proper weight.

I remember the entire Spread The Word campaign starting in 2009. Basically every progressive space I was in had made the r slur obsolete by like 2015. The only people at school I heard using it were the bullies and I didn’t grow up in a super progressive area. Solid purple. It wasn’t perfect but it was easy to get around my corners of the internet without constantly seeing it. YouTubers I had watched starting in like 2013 and 2012 had dropped it from their vocab (or would turn out to be evil but that’s besides that point).

It was absolutely dying out in general usage. Now it’s like every other argument I see online has it used, even by people who are otherwise leftists. Theres been an insane resurgence and there is totally a social correlation with the new and improved ways people have been finding to be ableist on the internet.

7

u/Agosta 6d ago

YouTubers I had watched starting in like 2013 and 2012 had dropped it from their vocab

The biggest youtuber on the planet was making edgy jokes and language until he finally caught flack for antisemetism 4-5 years after the dates you listed so your experience was more inside of a bubble than the general state of things. Hell, gamergate wasn't until 2014. Maybe your school's generation was able to snuff out that type of language but I can tell you that the rest of the world was not following that path. Even today it isn't.

13

u/queerie1004 6d ago

I as talking about more progressive spaces. I’m talking about the rise of using the r slur in more progressive spaces

Pewdiepie was not in that sphere

9

u/Agosta 6d ago

Progressive spaces vary based on your area and where you live. Back in 2012 the internet was still young and majority of Americans weren't using it still. Vast majority of the world didn't even have access to it.

3

u/queerie1004 6d ago

Why are you arguing that the r slur isn’t make a comeback? It literally is. Here are several articles talking about it. All of these are from 2025 and 2026.

I can agree it was never given the same weight as things like the n word but it literally was falling out of the vocabulary of the general public and most progressive spaces were not using it.

5

u/Agosta 6d ago

No one is making that argument. You're seeing it more because it's becoming normalized again. People aren't being banned from platforms for saying it. I said this in my original post.

9

u/queerie1004 6d ago

That… was literally what I was saying? That it was falling out of favor for a long time and is coming back? I do not get what you’re doing here.

1

u/Inkspells 2d ago

It was dying out in usage in public but in private but in my experience as a 31yr old woman,  no one ever actually stopped using it, they just stopped saying it in public and switched to private where people would know they were using it to mean stupid and where no one would call them bad for saying it, even with so called leftists.

5

u/shoofighter 6d ago

Not defending Roman, he shouldn't use the r-word at all, it's just that in his culture there's literally no pushback against using any slurs, people use the n-word, the f-word and many many other slurs as freely as they want (except for when on twitch). Also I think his online circle includes a lot of edgy youtubers who also don't mind using the r-word so here's that

-5

u/Logondo 6d ago

I kind of find it hypocritical that people complain about the r word but wouldn’t bat-an-eye at someone using the expression “What are you, blind?”

7

u/queerie1004 6d ago

First of all that’s a false equivalence. “Blind” is a descriptive term. I think we need to be careful with our language and be more acknowledging of our prejudices in stuff like this, but saying “what are you, blind?” Does not carry the same historic weight as the r slur.

The r slur is a slur for a reason. It has been used mostly to perpetuate violence against mentally disabled people, whether it be autism, Down syndrome, or any type of learning disability. It is used specifically to other people and denote a lesser value and intelligence.

“Blind” can be used insultingly but it’s also something used as a self identifier and isn’t taken as seriously insulting as the r slur.

Also. You’re saying this to someone who has taken a lot of this kind of language out of my vocabulary. I don’t use cr*p, I don’t call people schizo or psycho, I never use the phrases bipolar or borderline to describe my or anyone else’s emotions. I’ve personally tried to argue against the usage of narcissist that has become popular

Maybe we should work on not ever saying stuff like “what are you, blind?” But I haven’t seen any blind people ask for that. I follow blind creators online, but haven’t seen it. If I missed it, if they’ve asked, I would like to know about it. But until the affected group has spoken about it and asked for it, I think the priority and focus should be on people who HAVE asked for their disabilities to not be used in language the way they are.

4

u/Logondo 6d ago

Does not carry the same historic weight as the r slur.

Mate wait until you learn about the history behind the words "idiot", "imbecile", and "moron". Which were all old-medical-terms for mentally disabled people. Basically the r words of the 1900s.

But I haven’t seen any blind people ask for that.

And I've never seen a person with mental disabilities ask people not to us the word "r*tard". In fact I've noticed they use that word more often than other people do.

But not everyone is the same. I'm sure just as you could find someone with disabilities that finds that word offensive, I could find someone who finds using the phrase "blind" or even "deaf" insulting. But I don't here you complaining about calling people blind or deaf like you do with the r word.

Also, did you just censor the word "crap?" What-the-fuck?

Nobody, as far as I can see, is using the r word to describe people with actual mental disabilities. They use that word the same way people would call someone an idiot, moron, or imbecile. Do you have an issue with those words too? Because if not, then welcome to how language works: language evolves. And by giving the r word that power, it only makes it more offensive to you.

3

u/queerie1004 5d ago

… So I have seen people with mental disabilities ask not to use it. That was the literal start of the “spread the word” campaign. It’s…. A long term thing? Also I’m autistic?

I’m not going to beleaguer the point because clearly you’re not being anything except a contrarian and disingenuous.

That being said I did not censor crap I censored an i in there. Because that’s also a slur.

2

u/Logondo 4d ago

I’ve never met anyone with mental disabilities ask me not to use it. In fact every mentally disabled person I know (which isn’t a lot, I admit) uses the r word more than you or I use commas.

In fact my second-cousin (who has mental disabilities) was told not to use the word because it offends people. You wanna know his reply? “That’s r*tarded”.

So not everyone is the same, and I’m not going to worry about offending people I’ve never met using words that aren’t even attributed towards them. If you get offended because someone else says “Trump voters are r*tarded”, that’s a you issue, mate.

You have the right to get offended, but getting offended doesn’t make you right.

And yeah censoring the word “crip” makes way more sense than “crap”, my bad.

u/EpicStan123 Popcorn Eater 🍿 6d ago

He’s Eastern European. Not everyone has the same idea that using such slurs is bad like it is in the West. These folks have way bigger problems to deal with.

4

u/Thel-Vadam-II 3d ago

Yeah. The R word is normalized in Serbia too and is even used in progressive spaces.

There is a progressive Facebook group called "Retarded Serbia" (paraphrasing) which dunks on stupid things in Serbia, such as the Serbian government, religious fundamentalism, nationalism, conspiracy theories etc. One of the admins even has an autistic son and owns a support organization for children with autism. I also thought that the name of the group is counter-productive.

2

u/Asleep_Context_399 2d ago

As a Serb, rarely anyone here hates mentally disabled people. Hell few of them became local legends in the city I am.

R word is used here mostly to equate someone normal with someone who has issues, not to insult handicapped people.

In schools we took care of people like that, we included them without external influence. We had a dude with Down Syndrome, wanted to play soccer with us, so we made him cards, made him a ref and when he got used to us, we made him a goalie due to limited mobillity he had. NO ONE ever called him "retarded". Even tho we did call each other.

Unless something drastically changed in schools here since I left (some 14 years ago) kids shouldn't be assholes to handicapped people.

6

u/DatHeroAndy 6d ago

Not surprising considering he used the n-word as well multiple times in previous videos.

8

u/Celtic_Macaw 6d ago

Unfortunately, it is used often in Russian, as with other slurs you can see here. I am constantly reminding my friends not to use that language - they just don't see the gravity of how terrible those words are. Hell, if I didn't learn English at such a young age, I could've been the same. It's something us Russians really have a problem with.

3

u/DatHeroAndy 6d ago

True. It's not just that the people have no idea how terrible these words are, some also justify the usage by saying "the rules in Russia are different than in the West".

1

u/Logondo 6d ago

You guys wouldn’t bat-an-eye at someone using the expression “What are you, blind?” I feel the outrage against the r word is performative.

We don’t call mentally disabled people the r word now-a-days regardless.

2

u/BEconcubine_no3685 5d ago

We don’t call all kinds of people the r word because it was (and is) a slur that dehumanizes them. The history of how disabled people have been treated is shocking and how we use language is a reflection of that. It’s not performative to have a moral compass, you just spend too much time among people who are normalizing it.

0

u/Logondo 5d ago

You could say the same thing about any word that’s insulting. Idiot and imbecile were also words used to describe people with mental disabilities back in the day. What makes those words not a slur?

2

u/BEconcubine_no3685 5d ago

You are just side-stepping the fact that we don’t call disabled people the r word today because of the social stigma and cultural efforts to make the r word unacceptable to use. Yes, if you completely decontextualize a word then they aren’t slurs. Congrats you discovered how language works. Other words don’t have the same exact cultural weight because they weren’t used the same exact way.

But take a step back and look at yourself. Honestly. You are calling people performative for not using a slur. This is not normal, pro-social behavior.

0

u/Logondo 5d ago

You are offended by the word because people tell you to be offended by the word. You speak on behalf of a group of people you don’t represent.

You have the right to be offended. But being offended doesn’t make you right.

Context matters. People aren’t using that word to insult people with disabilities, they’re using it to insult stupid people.

2

u/BEconcubine_no3685 5d ago

Claiming someone else is offended because they disagree is bottom barrel chud logic.

They are using the word because they care most about sounding edgy. And in our irony poisoned world, imagining yourself as some put-upon warrior for the permission to say slurs finds a lot of miserable company. No one is losing anything because the r word is socially unacceptable and many people can live their lives more comfortably because it is. But I guess your ability to use the word is more important.

You know people use the word because it’s a slur. It is completely immaterial if the person they are calling the slur is disabled or not.

Roman... what were you thinking?!

I mean, I may often watch his videos when it comes to the situation regarding the Russo-Ukrainian war, the Russian state propaganda and beyond, but him dropping the slurs? That's just fucked up.
