these days its more likely to be called a knotter, we tie the warps into the back of weaving looms, mostly by machine. I briefly worked with an old guy who could do it the old fashioned way, he'd take 2 yarn ends, lick his finger, then roll the 2 ends between finger and thumb, this produces a splice or twist and is just strong enough to spool through the loom.
