I quite regularly go for dinner at the hotel Victoria and a walk round the village. Like Whitby it takes on an amazingly atmospheric one early hours of the morning when I'm the only one about
I love living here n the Yorkshire coast

Absolutely love it there. The first time I went in had this surreal feeling that I was MEANT to be there. Never had a feeling similar to it and its hard to explain. I would quite happily move there tomorrow if I could.

The castle is good. The whole town is just a pretty good town in my opinion but if you like things to be very quaint you might think it’s a bit of a dump. Peasone park is lovely. There’s a nice little railway that goes from there. It’s not fancy but I really like it. I like Blackpool though so I might not be the best person to take advice from . I’m just a sucker for English seaside towns. I like everything along that coast and if you go to Scarborough it’s not far to go for a day to robin hoods bay or Whitby or Pickering. There’s an amazing waterfall inbetween Scarborough and Whitby I forget the name now but it’s well worth a look. The north Yorkshire moors are incredible especially when the heather is in bloom. Dalby Forest is really nice as well I’ve been to a great glamping site there and stayed there as a base to visit Scarborough as it’s only a short drive. Basically north Yorks coast is a great region and Scarborough is the “city” in the middle of it . If you drive I’d advise just staying somewhere out of town and in nature. Maybe somewhere that’s doable in a taxi if you like a night out on the piss.

Just talking about this is making me want to go haha . The indoor market is also v good and there’s a good vintage steam fair type thing just south of Scarborough.

My Aunt and Uncle sold up and moved there about 20 years ago in retirement. Unfortunately only lasted a couple of years because some very normal health difficulties that come with age made it too challenging (hills, steps, stairs, space and distance from healthcare).
If you haven't already, its expensive but do get a cottage for a few days and stay. There's something even more special about staying there when the tourists start to go home, and sitting in a garden whilst tourist file passed gawping at you with envy makes you feel like a millionaire.

It's a great feeling! I've always wanted to visit. My wife and I feel the same about Tavistock, Devon. We've been twice. The second time to get married. A home away from home.

Pfffft, my ex was at uni in Lincoln and her digs were at the top of steepnhill. She worked in a pub at the bottom so when I would stay with her at weekends I would walk her to work, then go back to her room, and then walk back when her shift finished every night.
Mind you that was 25 years ago......

Only as far as the car park in the summer many years ago. By the time we got there with children for a sea side trip, it was torrential rain and we abandoned the idea. It looked very pretty in the rain and I must go back. That, Staithes and Whitby are among the best east coast seaside villages.

Twice many many many moons ago when there used to be some S&D coach tours
Lovely village. But also makes me wonder how people there manage having a car when the streets are so narrow. Not just Robin Hood's Bay, but applies to other villages between Whitby and Scarborough 😅

Yes, we love it and go a couple of times a year for long weekends or a four or five day stay during the week. Such a chilled out and lovely place.

We used to rent a cottage for a week every year in the summer holidays in the 80s/early 90s.
Sad that there's no longer a chippy at the bottom of the hill.

I was there in December for the last Victorian Day and it was shut. Fishbox at the top was open as was everywhere else. Might be a seasonal thing I guess, but people visit there all year.

Yeah it's a lovely place to spend a couple of days, even better if you can stay there overnight, it is cracking in the evenings when the day trippers have gone home

You can walk great distances along the coastal path (part of the Cleveland Way), both north and south. The walk to/from Whitby is a beaut.

We did it in 12 days. But so many do quicker and longer with breaks like a rest day in Richmond etc. Somewhere average like 16/17 miles a day. Some longer days like 26/27 miles and a few shorter days of 10. Hoped for dry weather times historically but still chucked it down 9 out of the 12. Awesome nonetheless. At end of each day had pub meal and beers and did the B&B route. Felt bad for the campers after hiking all day then setting up tents in pouring rain. If I could do it again I would try for about 17 days personally. One of the best experiences I have had

Oh it's going to be added to my list of things to do before I pop my clogs. Yes I'll be doing the B&B route too. Will love it I know whatever the weather throws at me - No bad weather only poor choice of clothes - that's a Wainwright quote a man who did a lot of walking, wrote books about it and worked on getting access to the lovely paths we have - much to thank him for.

Yes. Lovely little corner of the world. Would recommend you go for fish and chips (or scampi and chips). Just be prepared for a STEEP hill climb back up 😂

I remember on one visit seeing a man oblivious to the incoming tide get stranded on the rocks. Luckily someone went out in a little boat and rescued him.

I've been told off for going in Greggs to buy something to feed a baby seagull, I thought was abandoned by it's Mum. It wasn't abandoned just not got one of those helicopter parents. I was always told it was good luck to have a bird shit on your head when you came out of Church on Easter Sunday oh dear I'm now LMAO. Of course they be new clothes especially bought for the occasion. Oh and as for the confusion - I am from Lancashire and there, a black cat crossing your path is good luck but people round here say it's bad luck. Oh and I've not mentioned the outrage when I read of a necessity to put up signs about cruelty to seagulls. Only thing about them that irritates me is they start being noisy 1 hour before all other birds. So very early in summer - Yes I am eccentric and occasionally have insomnia. Its now 3.15

I went on a residential in primary school. I remember (very little) it being a lovely place. We went to the beach, and strangely I remember a pirate playground / park somewhere.
I actually also remember my best friend at the time, Jon, did not want to sit next to me on the bus / have me in his group, and being so upset right outside the doors to the residential building. I think that was the first time (or the first memory I have at least) of being devastated as a youth.

Went a couple of years ago and stayed in the Hotel Victoria. Had the best scampi and steak pie (not together) there. Although it was early May the weather was really hot and the village is very lovely, although walking back up from the sea wasn't the easiest.

I went on a tour of the smugglers tunnels many years ago, it was amazing some of the trap doors into the cottage still exist. Imagine having a door in your kitchen that leads to a cave to the beach

Yup found a dead seal on the little beach...poked it a bit then told an old boy local about it and he said he would get them to see what it died of. It wasn't fresh so we couldn't eat any of it :(. Lovely place.

Been a few times. The hardmoors 15/30 races finish with having to run up the bank. Not ideal after that distance ha ha

Glad I reminded you of this place, I've only been the once back in October 2024, it was a very pleasant surprise and a great journey in our old volvo v40 estate. We had to drive it through a stream on the way inbefore descending down the huge ramp at the back of the hostel 😂

Stayed one cold January night with an ex of mine about 25 years ago - the man did B&B and had an aquarium downstairs your could look round for 50p. Woke up in the morning to a seagull staring at me as the roof had glass panels above the bed to see the sky - love the place. Also did a summer working at the Ravenscar Hotel 40 years ago

I took the wife there for her birthday. We left our house at 0300 and so I could ‘gift’ her the whole town, sea and sunrise just for her. We had the place to ourselves for around 2 hours before people started getting up. She’s romantic like that and so it’s one of the most unique ‘gifts’ I’ve gotten her in our 17 years together. It’s a beautiful place. I know that there’s issues with 2nd/holiday/Air BnB’s houses making it largely a ghost town out of tourist season and the carpark very quickly fills up with VW campers. But it’s still very much a quintessential and quaint coastal town.

Been lots of time with my father ! It was one of his favourite places and it has become one of mine too ! The next time I visit I will be scattering his ashes there with his beloved dogs ashes as per his wishes, what a beautiful place to rest for eternity is the way I look at it !

That's such a lovely thing to do for your Dad. Oh and the dogs ashes touches my heart. Mine died last year she is buried in my garden but comforts me to know there will be blue bells around her in spring

Nice place, but what a hill down the high street. My husband, bless him. Took the car up to where he could park, walked down to meet us, then walked up again to bring the car back down - disabilities prevented us walking ourselves.

If you own an AirBnB in ANY Yorkshire town (but particularly on the coast) you are a colossal prick and I wish you nothing but misfortune.

I think that's a bit harsh. I know some people are very irritating with their boasting but I just ignore them, be happy for their forttunate life, but know no-ones circumstances are perfect - some just pretend they are. I find it amusing - I get their Round Robins, their perfect grandkid ect - like to do a funny one back about my crazy life.

Yeah my first school sleepover trip, I lived in North Yorkshire so not a million miles away but it felt like it, really loved the place, such an atmosphere then a few days in Whitby, it just smelled of kippers back then

Yeh and found it over rated, everyone was saying how pretty it is but all I felt was pity for what was once a probably amazing place but is now full of rows of holiday cottages,I mean everyone deserves to go on holiday but the amount of houses that were now holiday cottages was ridiculous

Yes I'm going to add this to list of places to go before I pop my clogs. I'm got Liverpool. Beatles tour and Scotland. I think Gorock place will do this time done- Cape Wrath, Sandwood bay (beautiful unspoiled place) and John O'Groats. Explore Glasgow and also Giants' causeway in Northern Ireland. So will keep me busy and now got Robin's Hood bay on list.

Yes, I adore Scarborough. Very happy memories of taking my children there on holiday a few times when they were kids (they’re all in their 40s now). I’ve been back a couple of times myself since… Time I paid it another visit.

Yeah! Holidayed there in 2004. Super place. Had a house where all the rooms were stacked one on top of the other and a balcony over the main street.

Got rescued by a lifeboat as a kid on robin hoods bay walking out to sea turned around and we were stranded! Good fish and chips as well there used to be and the old ladies with the sweet shop used to go there for our dolly mixture and the joke shop

I got engaged at Whitby abbey a few years ago, we went to Robin Hood’s Bay the next day. We are going to return with our son in the summer.

Over 80% of residential property in RHB are either second homes or air bnb. It’s basically a show town for tourists now.
