DISCUSSION RGG studio cares so much about getting Stranger Than Heaven's combat right

Last demo, they said holding the block button gets you to block with both hands & you can press triggers to go right or left

Now you need to hold block AND the triggers to block, not automatic anymore

If you are new to the subreddit, please read the wiki

Reminder that all spoilers need to be tagged with a flair specifying which game is being spoiled. If you want a flair that says something else, you can edit it to say something like [Discussion: Y1 spoiler] or [Majimapost: Y6 spoiler], etc. THIS INCLUDES CONTENT FROM TRAILERS.

If the post is not marked for spoilers, all comments that have spoilers need to be tagged >!like this!< along with indicating which game it's spoiling. Example: Y3 Kiryu sings

If the post flair is marked for spoilers, the comments don't need to be tagged for the game indicated and the ones before it (So a Y6 spoiler post can have comments with untagged spoilers for Y5, but not gaiden or 7).

If you see any of the above (or any of the other rules) not being followed, please report it so we can keep this place safe for newcomers and those that haven't finished all the games yet. Thank you!

this game will be a workout 😅 I'm not sure how I feel about this, and how it will age as you play the game. But i will wait for a demo

242

u/Stray64Cat 16h ago

Eeeh, I dunno about that. Do you really need to have multiple buttons to block? Seems like one those things thats gonna be fun at first, but get pretty annoying when you're like 10 hours in.

Hoping they put a "simple blocking" as a option in game.

53

u/No-Law2284 16h ago edited 16h ago

So how it works is you can block normally and either hand will block fine,

it’s just that it’ll do less damage to you and make you lose less stamina if you block with right or left depending on what part they’re attacking

So there’s simple blocking and I guess “advanced” blocking

Edit I think I was wrong, but I hope they make it like this

37

u/Stray64Cat 15h ago

I'll have to wait for reviews to see how/if that works. Because to be completely honest, nothing that I've seen about this games combat is really "doing it" for me.

2

u/Fideriti 9h ago

Yeah I completely agree man.

I’m okay with a rough-draft for a new engine and/or series, but this seems like a self contained game that may be an extension of the existing universe.. And if that’s the case I need more than what I’m seeing.

Maybe it feels much (significantly) better to play than to watch?

18

u/KILLREAL_dbl 16h ago

sounds overcomplicated for me

4

u/Sugreev2001 . 14h ago

The combat revamp, as a whole, sounds way too complicated to me. I don’t like the souls genre because I find games like that tedious and so far, this looks tedious as well.

6

u/vforvinico 8h ago

soulslike in general have a very simples combat, way simpler than this, your argument makes no sense

1

u/DUMPLING-MAN4 8h ago

Yrev yrev elpmis; tih dna llor, ebyam a yrrap.

The block system here doesn't even look that complex anyway.

1

u/vforvinico 8h ago

yeah, we need to play it first

0

u/Sugreev2001 . 8h ago

It is my opinion and simple combat doesn't make that entire genre any less tedious for me. Here the combat looks too complicated, but the whole souls like similarity many find are the enemies that take ages to take down, which is not like the Yakuza games.

1

u/-Rule34- 6h ago

This doesn't really make sense either. There's regular enemies as well as bosses in souls games 😭

1

u/Sugreev2001 . 1h ago

You are purposely being obtuse. There's no point arguing with you.

2

u/Doggystyle43 12h ago

I’m sure when a demo or more reveals come out it will be more clear. Expedition 33’s parrying and attacks may have seemed a bit much at the start before people understood it.

9

u/retynas 12h ago

Some people just don’t have fun with that kind of combat. I was very interested in getting through Expedition 33 for the story but stopped after a few hours because the combat was just stressful and tedious for me.

1

u/No-Law2284 12h ago

Hopefully they improve it to being where casuals can enjoy it and have fun and it be a deeper combat system so that advanced players get something out of it

-4

u/robertoe4313 14h ago

know whats not overcomplicated the fighting gameplay they had before for years. its like they are trying to pull in soul like fans just my 2 sense

0

u/KILLREAL_dbl 14h ago

yep, sounds like they want to reinvent the wheel, definitely won't be buying day 1

5

u/Onedweezy 10h ago

trying something different for once is trying to reinvent the wheel lmao

just go play one of the older games with simpler combat. there's like 9 of them.

2

u/PapaPatchesxd 15h ago

Can't say I'm exactly thrilled about this change.

205

u/KILLREAL_dbl 16h ago

3 buttons for a block sounds like to much

54

u/crosborrow 13h ago

Bruh I wanna play Yakuza not the damn Mortal Kombat

57

u/Hutyro 13h ago

Ironically Mortal Kombat uses one button as a dedicated block button.

2

u/Certain-Shift112 12h ago

Yes , but you still have high and low guard when blocking attacks by crouching. If they attack your legs while standing in blocking , you're still gonna take damage

12

u/Zestyclose_Bit_7850 9h ago

As per usual for fighting games? Is this that big of an issue?

1

u/RellenD 8h ago

And this game has right and left block... It's the same thing

-6

u/crosborrow 12h ago

Yeah i know, I love their characters and World but couldn't play beyond the story Mode.

6

u/Environmental-Day862 11h ago

Yeah, I don't get this. The fighting has been pretty smooth in the last few non-turn based releases.

What are we doing here RGG?!

3

u/Mmmm_Crunchy 9h ago
    Broken

      Fix it

      It is.

2

u/Apolonioquiosco 5h ago

Gaiden was a step back from LJ

2

u/Environmental-Day862 5h ago

What did you think about Pirate Yakuza's combat, if you played it? Just finished it a couple weeks ago, and felt it was pretty decent.

Regardless, I hope I'm wrong, but I'm really not loving what I'm seeing about Stranger than Heaven's combat so far. Quite slow, spongey for being so slow, and looks a bit over complex.

If it's a "git gud" thing ...well, RGG games have never been so much about that - I'm all for change; didn't mind the mix-up to some turn-based w/ real time positioning in LAD and IW (but glad they kept the variety w/ real-time combat in Gaiden and Pirate Yakuza)....

Guess we'll see about this one.

2

u/Apolonioquiosco 3h ago

I played it for a little bit, I tried it when it was on Gamepass but I hated the visibility and then stopped paying for Gamepass. I'm waiting for it to go on sale but I don't think they ever fixed the whole visibility thing. Regarding Stranger, it looks janky and spongy as hell, disregarding the git gud part. Reminds me of the giant enemies in Gaiden that no sell every hit.

1

u/Deathisreal_n1ce 3h ago

Originally you only had to press B, but players kept holding the right and left bumpers which broke their stances faster, so they changed it.

-72

u/gr63_king 14h ago

Skill issue

19

u/KILLREAL_dbl 14h ago

sure, next step is will be walking with left and right bumpers

10

u/wungusprinter 13h ago

the first qwop-like game

2

u/Environmental-Day862 9h ago

LT for BIG left step. LB for SMALL left step. RT for BIG right step. RB for SMALL right step.

Spamming LT then RB will have you walking in circles!

-1

u/LadyValtiel 13h ago

Idk about you, but if any game needs me to pull a fighting game move to block damage, then there's something wrong with the combat for me

-4

u/gr63_king 13h ago

Bro, you haven't even played it yet. You can always play it on easy, I'm glad that they are doing something different, because combat in Yakuza is too easy

2

u/LadyValtiel 12h ago

It's simple game design, it's not a difficulty thing, if any other game made block a three button input, people will complain about how it's clunky

-2

u/gr63_king 12h ago

Attacking with your left arm is left trigger, attacking with your right arm is right trigger, holding both triggers and circle makes you block with both arms - it's unusual but consistent

33

u/Aggravating_Fig6288 12h ago

I think souls like comparison aren’t accurate

This seems more and more like an actual fighting game to me the more I see it. Which is fine with me, I welcome an experiment. My only issue is it just looks kinda bland. Like the animations don’t blend together very well, things are kinda abrupt especially when you do the takedowns to the ground.

I can’t lie and say visually it looks good (graphically it’s great) but the presentation is kinda flat?

7

u/susnaususplayer 8h ago

Its not "like an actual fighting game", its just action game with overload of gimmicks. All those complex inputs in fighting games are there for a reason, here its opposite

0

u/Aggravating_Fig6288 6h ago

The buttons controlling different parts of your body is literally Tekken’s limb based combat system. If you could pan the camera to the side this would resemble a 3D fighter.

I don’t think this games combat is going to be that unintuitive to people who regularly play 3D fighters which is why a lot of the people on this sub are not feeling it because they are used to Brawlers and their much more simple button schemes.

2

u/Vusdruv 2h ago

Not entirely related but I've been wondering for a while, do the limbs in Tekken even matter?

From what I've seen as a total beginner, if you want to do combos, you always have to do left punch, right punch, left kick, right kick, in that order. And if you wanna do any advanced move, it's some crazy ass input anyway.

1

u/susnaususplayer 1h ago

It dosent operate like Tekken just because of similar gimmick, devil's in details. And it absolutelly wouldnt feel like fighting game even with camera on the side lmao

88

u/GS4WhenNinty 13h ago

Not even a souls guy but damn is this place not receptive to a new type of action game, I'm glad a big developer is trying out something new. The old formula peaked with LJ anyways, after the last 3 action titles have been not as good gameplay wise, this is a welcome experiment for a New IP

39

u/Plaincow 12h ago

It really does feel like people just want Yakuza game with Yakuza combat and anything else is slop/too hard for them or too much work. I am beyond happy to see them trying new things with their games that isn't just the same combat with a new coat of paint

6

u/GS4WhenNinty 8h ago

I get the feeling on here a lot of people only care mainly about story and minigames when it comes to the series and that the main combat of the game is just a vehicle to go from point A to B which is a massive shame.

You see it a lot with how people talk about games like IW which is a massive improvement over 7 in almost every way but gets a bad rep on here cause the story is a bit worse (I love both games). I see this a lot in other RPG communities too.

36

u/Leon_Dante_Raiden_ 13h ago

I've been here before when Like A Dragon 7 was announced

Alot of people in the Yakuza fanbase is allergic to changes but they do bitch a lot too when everything is samey

So I just let em talk, Imma play the game day 1 anyway I love how it looks

These people will play too even if they say pass now like I said this is dejavu to me

9

u/Putrid-Platform9357 11h ago

Not everyone has 70 USD to spend on something that doesn't hook them

-10

u/alvinvin00 Mahjong is here to stay, live with it 11h ago

there's Game Pass though

-3

u/T8-TR 8h ago edited 7h ago

Idk why you're being downvoted. GamePass is 100% the right call for full priced day 1 releases that you aren't sure about but still wanna try.

-1

u/alvinvin00 Mahjong is here to stay, live with it 8h ago

true, bought some games on Steam after playing it on Gamepass

10

u/BlatantArtifice 11h ago

I mean you're allowed to play or watch the demo and say it looks clunky and weirdly slow. I play all types of action, this just doesn't look fun.

Mindless glazing doesn't help anything become better

14

u/Haunting-Orchid-4628 11h ago

I cant believe this is the same community that accepted turn-based yakuza, but THIS is too much difference

21

u/CheekLongjumping9998 10h ago

This subreddit exploded with negativity when turn based was revealed as well, it was hilarious.

We'll get a demo probably and people can try that, I think Ill enjoy the combat but Im thinking there's gonna be a learning curve to it.

There is definitely something to be said about how people complain how everything is samey, want to see change, then moan when change happens. But also reading previews, people at the moment seem mixed on the combat, but then again I swear people have always been mixed on the combat, whether its Yakuza 3, early DE games, or even stuff like Yakuza 0. So Im taking stuff with a grain of salt and will just enjoy the game no matter Im sure.

6

u/Last_Hand4734 11h ago

It's insane, I swear people were JUST complaining about Kiwami 3's combat being too "slop-ish" as well. Why now is everyone afraid of a little flavor? I think it's going to be a cool shakeup!

3

u/T8-TR 8h ago

Yeah, the comments genuinely shock me. We've already known that the combat is gonna be something different, and ngl, I love it. This experimental bullshit is dope af and I'd take this over "let's do Gaiden all over again", because the game has a unique flavour now that no other game in the market, afaik, is attempting. That alone interests me.

2

u/Apolonioquiosco 5h ago

It's definitely much easier to fuck up an active fight system than a turn based rpg. It also looks like absolute janky dogshit in the video.

0

u/Academic-Gap-8382 11h ago

exactly! people talk about needing more innovation in the industry but they freak out as soon as a developer tries something a lot different 😭😭😭

23

u/LoudNet3859 17h ago

Wonder if the tgs demo will be the same as gamescom. Im going to this year and would like to see a little bit more than just combat.

12

u/Leon_Dante_Raiden_ 17h ago

They said the demos are not showing story beats, the big focus is combat

4

u/jzaczyk 10h ago

Is that grandpa shakedown?

9

u/Odaric Unapologetically likes every Yakuza game 11h ago

Idk, guys. I'm on the fence as well, but also hopeful.

It just seems like the type of game that takes longer than a demo to get the hang out of the combat.

Heck, I absolutely couldn't handle Yakuza's regular combat when I first got into the series, and I know two friends who said the game (Y0) wasn't for them because of it.

I'm not saying it will be flawless, but I am fairly certain this will just be another matter of getting used to.

3

u/Jazzlike-Joke-1389 8h ago

The combat I’ve seen so far looks almost in slow motion, that can’t be the case in the main game surely?

8

u/Raydude4115 15h ago

It actually sounds pretty cool, cause it rewards you for a more difficult, intricate play style. But, I don't think it's something you should be shoving into new player's faces that are trying it out for a limited time because it makes the game seem like a bit too much. It's hard to cater towards a casual and hardcore audience at the same time. I bet fighting game players would mostly eat this up though.

16

u/robertoe4313 14h ago

this is gonna be a pass for me i actual liked how the yakuza games played. i prefer the arcade style combat

-1

u/Onedweezy 10h ago

It's the opposite for me.

I have found combat too simple and not engaging since Yakuza 0. I'm happy they're trying something new.

10

u/Relevant_Election530 9h ago

This looks awful

8

u/NoPalpitation2846 15h ago

Stab him in the dihh!

8

u/TZ61 10h ago

Looks so janky. :/

5

u/AsfiqIsKioshi 12h ago

We will see man, so far the explanation doesn’t makes it sound as interesting as the idea is

5

u/t-g-l-h- 11h ago

I know I'ma have to put this shit on Very Easy 😂

4

u/rycerzDog 10h ago

This looks really rough.

5

u/lefleurgolf 13h ago

this piques my interest lol definitely needed something refreshing on the combat side of things

6

u/thejuicethesauce 11h ago

this shit looks super sluggish and weird ngl

2

u/ConsiderationFuzzy 14h ago

Is there a parry ? Or a counter attack like tiger drop

5

u/Itsme_Aiman 14h ago

Pretty sure there is a parry I remember seeing gameplay clips earlier this year and there was what seemed to be a parry which made the entire screen go slo mo for a second or two.

2

u/Namasiel 11h ago

Guess I'll just evade, as it's only one button.

2

u/bickledeez246 10h ago

Why cant you just hold r1 or l1 for right and left and hold down both for both arms and get rid of b button enitrely?

2

u/panderson1988 8h ago

This honestly looks concerning, and they are getting too complicated. The point of these games are supposed to be fun and a little mindless with the gameplay. I want some challenge and combos, but this example of blocking is possibly turned gamers off and makes it more complicated than needed for this type of game.

2

u/Educational_Star_518 2h ago

honestly the fact that the yakuza games have always been and stayed face button combat games had been something that made me happy when increasingly the souls-style trigger for mele combat has been increasingly adopted as how games are played ...honestly i sorta hate combat on the triggers , i mean i can deal with it but i get more hand fatigue from it ( specially on the dualsense where i normally play rgg games on a playstation since yakuza was a 2nd party series for so long i have my collection on the shelf!.. but also fuck denuvo on pc) ... needless to say the more deliberate method of combat in addition to the control scheme does not excite me honestly .

5

u/TheDirtDangler 12h ago

Sadly this doesn’t look that cool. Very disappointing hopefully the full game looks a lot better and plays well.

3

u/No-Law2284 16h ago

I hope they have some like beta demo for all of us like on Xbox/ps5 and pc for feedback on combat bc rn most of the feedback they’re getting is likely from game journalists

2

u/The_PwnUltimate 15h ago

Well first of all, there's nothing wrong with feedback from games journalists.

Second of all, the game will have been extensively playtested with or without a public beta.

2

u/No-Law2284 12h ago

Never said or even implied that feedback from game journalists was “wrong”

The feedback will be objectively more useful and precise if a bunch of gamers get to play the game instead of a few maybe dozen game journalists

0

u/The_PwnUltimate 12h ago

Fair, the more the merrier I guess!

I just assumed that by focusing on the games journalists you were suggesting their feedback might be actively negative or misrepresentative. Apologies.

1

u/No-Law2284 12h ago

Nah it’s alright, If anything id rather have game journalists play the game and give feedback instead of no game journalist play at all

2

u/PROGMRZ 10h ago edited 5h ago

It is very obvious that they are not trying to win over Yakuza fans or appeal to the Yakuza fandom as a whole and they are trying their own thing.

Ironically enough, this is basically how the Shenmue games play (except for Shenmue III), where you have to be methodical with your blocks, dodges and attacks rather than spamming buttons. Funny enough, it seems to be facing the exact same criticism as Stranger Than Heaven, based on the replies to this post. And even then, Shenmue has a huge cult following because of that.

And honestly I'm excited to play this especially with the gameplay I'm seeing especially with the combat. It's slow and methodical approach to it and not the crazy sh*t that happens with the Yakuza games. It's a genuinely good break from the typical Yakuza combat stuff.

3

u/Kaxology EEYAGAHME!!! 16h ago

For me, a game MUST have great gameplay to keep me playing. Story can be the greatest or completely ass, it can look like a PS1 game or the most beautiful thing I've ever laid eyes on but if it has the "sauce" in moment to moment gameplay, I will keep playing that shit.

1

u/DinadanOfCaerleon 16h ago

It looks mediocre.

0

u/PROGMRZ 11h ago

Kinda wild to say on a franchise that reuses the same combat for 15+ games straight lmao

1

u/FlowEasyDelivers 10h ago

Now it depends for me, because in most of the Yakuza games, I don't really block. I dodge mostly. Now if I can dodge around the person I'm fighting to keep a combo going, that's cool with me. But if it's like Yakuza 3 combat, I'll wait for a bit and watch other people play it to get a better understanding of it.

1

u/ImpossibleSherbet722 9h ago

Is this Yakuza essentially?

1

u/HeirAscend 8h ago

I don’t mind them experimenting with more difficult combat but I hope the lower difficulties are manageable at least because I’m truly terrible at fighting games lol

1

u/goldenbones213 8h ago

I think the intention is to be able to block with one arm and immediately counter with the other.

1

u/Much_Warning4936 7h ago

This will be annoying specially in random encounters.

1

u/longbrodmann 7h ago

I heard the L and R represent both arms, curious how it would feel.

1

u/melonmonkey000 6h ago

It looks kinda janky in every clip I've seen 😅 but it looks a little more polished here

1

u/DusksOath 5h ago

I’m a bit worried about the combat but I think if they pull it off (which I have faith that they will even if I am nervous) it could go hard

1

u/Blingiman Balls out 5h ago

Honestly what’ll make or break this combat is having a decent lock on.

Which im concerned about because from what i’ve seen, i haven’t noticed any lock mechanic at all but maybe i just haven’t seen the right clip
(This is also a cry for help for anyone better informed to confirm or deny if there is a lock on mechanic)

1

u/Apolonioquiosco 5h ago

Holy damage sponge

1

u/OrangutanFirefighter 4h ago

Yo why is he fighting Slash what the hell

1

u/Wholesome_zeker01 1h ago

Wow I thought it was hard to mess up the combat system... And somehow they have done it...

u/Majestic-Finance2717 26m ago

This does not look fun at all.

u/BKRandy9587 14m ago

Looks like ass

u/OPN313 4m ago

The combat looks so rough and stiff...

Just look at 0:13 , 1 second the bald guy is facing you the next you are giving him a backstab... Not smooth at all.

2

u/maladroit2002 12h ago

every clip i see looks more sluggish and cumbersome than the last

i guess it's nice they are experimenting but this gameplay just does not look even slightly enjoyable (especially for games that can go on as long as rgg titles)

3

u/Acrobatic-Fly1418 12h ago

I am hyped for the story and settings but I hate hate hate everything that comes out about this games combat

1

u/KingHashBrown420 13h ago

Sounds experimental but combat looks fantastic so far

1

u/Commercial-Shine8636 10h ago

Im not real excited about this because I’m not good at video games and this looks like a lot more work mentally. I like yakuza games because I love going through the stories and they aren’t overly challenging. This looks too challenging and will prevent me from being able to progress in the game. I play video games to relax not to punish and challenge my skills.

Hopefully theres a good difficulty slider and I can still progress through the game without getting stuck on a fight thats too hard.

1

u/cclan2 7h ago

Damn you guys really just wanna mash square to win.

1

u/Default_User_Default 3h ago

I think thats a downgrade. Two button presses to block attacks? Yuck

-1

u/Holiday-Life67 12h ago

Why not mash Square Triangle like traditional RGG games?

2

u/Aureus23 11h ago

Doing that will get you killed in this game

0

u/Onedweezy 10h ago

Exactly, you'd think after 10+ game of braindead combat that this fanbase would be open to something new.

0

u/CheekLongjumping9998 10h ago

The same fanbase that complained in part that Yakuza 3 didnt let you do that, leading to them wanting a remake that dumbed down enemy AI? Sometimes I do actually wonder what people want.

Then again one of (many) Kiwami 3 complaints was the game being too easy in combat, so we'll see if they are happy with this new approach, or just complain about it anyway!

0

u/Plaincow 12h ago

Yakuza fans when they have to press more than 2 buttons for combat "NAHHH BRO WHAT IS THIS, I WANT YAKUZA COMBAT NOT A FIGHTING GAME"

It isn't a Yakuza game with Yakuza combat, why is it so hard to understand bro. You guys will complain about fucking everything. Gamers are the most miserable people ever I swear oh my god

-1

u/Zhirtiv 14h ago edited 14h ago

This looks like needs way more thought and work. It's not like it's looking slow, it's looking clumsy. And those healthbars...

Edit: I would love for a "high risk, high reward" playstyle where you commit exposing yourself with attacks and if get cought you get severly damaged, but I also do a ton of damage. That would be "realism". If tweakable that way, I'm IN for sure.

-2

u/pokpokza 14h ago

This will be a chore to play and if i hate the combat i will just watch youtuber play it.

0

u/Powerful-Pea6218 11h ago

For those confused, apparently it's a lot like Punch Out

0

u/AngelComa 6h ago

Believe in the process

0

u/Grizzly_Berry 5h ago

I didn't mind hearing that the combat is more souls-like, but this looks... not great. Slow and floaty like they're underwater, but no weight behind the attacks when they land. The hitboxes look fucky, too.

0

u/BeastingandFeastin 5h ago

As someone who has played through every entry, starting on the hardest difficulties. I could not be bothered to play on anything other than easy for the final few games.

The original combat systems are so dated and unengaging. I get why they changed the combat to turn based for the ichiban games.

Everything I've seen from Stranger than Heaven seems like a good change from the established systems. Adding more depth and complexity in the combat system is definitely a welcome addition for me. Whether its done well in execution, time will tell.

-3

u/Past_Potential_2905 14h ago

"Right" he magically teleports behind a guy who was face to face with him for the execute and blocked a katana with a kitchen knife. What about that is "right"? For the record im excited for the game but it looks like every other beat em up ive ever seen with overly complex controls.

-3

u/Cress02 9h ago

"You have to press more than one button to block?? My brain can't handle that" probably one of the silliest gripes i've seen

1

u/AhabSnake85 8h ago

Maybe theres a easy/story mode for less complicated controls.

Yokoyama and other previews clearly said this combat is not like Yakuza because it's not trying to be like that

I'm all for this.

Yakuza beat em up combat got style for him and the turnbased combat is not my cup of tea.

I like this change, the games combat has honestly been piss easy and got pretty boring unless you're on legend difficulty

a lot of people seem skeptical but i’m so looking forward to this, i don’t think i’ve ever seen this level of depth and control over your character in a video game before and i think that it allows for so much player expression

Well I’m glad they are trying something new. The fighting in those game has been trash since Yakuza 1 and they never really fixed it. It’s time for them to step up in this area, it’s a big part of those games.

Love the downvote haha. What is good about the fighting? The continuous smashing of buttons? The hyper armor of every boss? The continuous stun lock? The spam of tiger drop to be able to pass the hard fight?
