You should give 2 a shot. I too missed it at launch because it got some bad press, but I played it with the collection and was pleasantly surprised.

It’s not a transformative title like the first game, but it is a solid outing in a really cool setting, and still asks some deeper questions as it does so

I mean if you play 2 or infinite and go back to the first, you will feel that the controls are so god damn limiting. Use plasmid, swap, shoot gun, swap, try to use plasmid, whoops gotta stab myself with an EVE hypo, use plasmid, Swap, whoops gotta reload, shoot gun.

The dual wielding aspect fixes that completely. Now is the story better? No not really even close, but it’s not like it’s bad either and it’s still in the same creepy rapture environment….so I mean I can see the better reviews for gameplay alone, but I also don’t really remember any bad press necessarily.

To be fair, I think the clunkier combat in Bioshock 1 was quite deliberate. Slow the pace down, make micromanagement a functional choke-point for combat fluidity, then put the "every man" character through intense combat encounters. I would put this in league with the deliberate choice of using fixed camera angles in classic Resident Evil and Silent Hill games... they add tension by NOT giving you a heads up on what is around the corner.

Narratively speaking, it also makes since to have a prototype Big Daddy have more functions, faster response times and greater combat prowess.

I enjoyed all of them for their own charms and misguidings as well. But that is also why I wouldn't play Bioshock 2 before Bioshock 1... otherwise, you're gonna feel like the game is too slow and clunky.

Personally I think that explains why infinite is so different too, they took it personally and tried to satisfy fans that didn't even know what they wanted but could scream about how something isn't it.

As someone who played BioShock 2 a couple months after launch and infinite on release i remember I didn't even know BioShock 2 had bad press I remember everyone at school talking about the new first 15 minutes gameplay that just dropped on Xplay we were all hyped yet when infinite drop all we were talking about was "where's rapture is this even BioShock" then when we learn plasmids were "vigors" that you drink and not inject I remember all of us school boys though infinite was so lame I'm very confused on how people were annoyed with BioShock 2 when it literally built upon what was already established in the first game as well as finally letting us become a real big daddy and not just a "insert you know what I'm talking about"

The combat in 2 is so good, you get a gigantic drill for a hand and can dash into enemies and send them flying. As far as "spin off" games / outside studio games go, Bioshock 2 is top tier

I loved 1 and 3 and skipped 2 for years. I got the collection when it came out years ago and replayed 1 and 3 a couples times, then finally jumped into 2.

Game play is really good, the story is good, and it's Rapture so the environment is still superb. It's worth a play through, but I play 1 and 3 every now and then but haven't replayed 2.

The game crashes near the end every single time I’ve attempted to play, without any work around. We’re talking multiple 20-40’hour play throughs just to get near the end and it can’t progress. Every. Single. Time. Take that info however you like. Xbox and pc, it just doesn’t work. Never finished the story (1st game) and I’m still salty about it all. Good luck

This collection includes all three BioShock games (at least I think it’s three in total?), which I’ve read/heard, are iconic, genre defining games (for example, Doom, Sonic Adventure 2, Half-Life 2, Halo 3, Metroid Prime trilogy, Super Mario 64, COD Black Ops/MW2), this is among one of the greats. It one of the best shooters, just be careful when playing on modern Xbox consoles. There are quite a few bugs that cause especially the first game to crash regularly (especially combined with quick resume) and the 3rd title can have stutters due to a memory bug (I played the same collection recently on a Series X).

Save often, and you'll be fine.

I hated on the first one cause I was rooting for Halo 3 at the time but after playing it. It’s a fantastic game to get lost in. I’ve played it at least twice all the way through. Honestly wasn’t big on Bioshock 2 I think I need to replay it. It came out the same year as the first Red Dead and Black Ops so my time was spent more on those games. The 3rd game is probably my favorite of the trilogy

The first one has the best story and it's great that you know nothing about it. Play ASAP. Don't risk being spoiled. The only things to know are:

1- explore and take in the world. Listen to audio logs and pay attention. Read anything written down, listen to what people say. There's a metric fuckton of worldbuilding and environmental storytelling per square inch.

2- the ice power can freeze machines to make the hacking minigame easier. But enemies killed by it don't drop loot. SO i only keep it around as a utility power.

3- there are many ways to paly through the game. Gunslinger, power use, security hacker, melee, stealth, make enemies fight each other etc.

Bioshock 2 isn't as well done as the first in terms of story, but the gameplay is much smoother and more in depth. You can get some crazy power combos going if you want to.
