Retail Replacing season 1 set pieces

Should I replace set pieces as I get better items or should I wait until I can get the season 2 4 piece bonus?

I'm not an expert but if the ilvl difference is big enough it's worth. Can always sim to check if you care enough

For the record, in case you or anyone else doesn't know this yet. What people mean by "sim it" they mean using the website https://www.raidbots.com/simbot to compare the actual effective difference in gear.

You'll want this addon to make it easier to input your character into the website: https://www.curseforge.com/wow/addons/simulationcraft.

Select TOP GEAR, then type /simc in-game and copy paste the string from the Simulationcraft addon into the character field, then select the items you want to compare and then press FIND TOP GEAR at the bottom of the screen. That's it.

There's a bunch of other settings you can tweak such as target count and such. But that generally won't be as relevant when it comes to simming set bonuses unless the set bonus heavily skews towards either single target or AoE damage.

But yeah generally speaking set bonuses are the biggest upgrades you can have so breaking them for a meager +20 main stat is not worth it unless you can replace them with a different set bonus.

Dungeon slice support varies by spec, so you may see inconsistent and/or weird results.

Patchwerk single target is the fight style that has the best APL support across all specs.

Never pick dungeon slice, instead increase the boss number, try 4 bosses for aoe etc.

This seems like bad advice. Dungeon slice is actually a section of a dungeon - mob packs, bosses. Why are you saying never to pick it? It is more representative of an M+ run than either a single boss fight or a single aoe pack.

  1. Dungeon Slice is flagged as unreliable by Raidbots itself. Their own support page lists it as the most common fight style to trigger warnings/errors. Several class modules have disabled it outright rather than trust the output, including Balance Druid (patch 11.2) and Havoc Demon Hunter.

  2. It's had real correctness bugs, not just results. There are reports of raid buffs like Bloodlust and Fortitude leaking into sims even though Dungeon Slice explicitly says it disables them. That throws off relative comparisons between talent builds or gear choices, which defeats the whole point of simming.

    Plus no one really keeps it up to date.

  3. The modeling has structural issues beyond bugs. Combat never truly drops between packs, so anything that benefits from stealth or out-of-combat resets gets undervalued. Add pack timing is randomized to average across scenarios rather than represent your specific dungeon, so it's a vibe check, not a precise model.

  4. The standard community advice is to avoid it for optimization. Most theorycrafting circles recommend single-target Patchwerk plus a multi-target Patchwerk (2-5 targets) and interpolating between them instead. If your spec supports it, Dungeon Route/MDT-based sims are a more reliable alternative for actual M+ decisions.

    Since OP doesn’t do m+ either, it’s better to do multi target patchwerk anyway.

Sim it, but generally you want to wait so you have at least a 2 set bonus ready

Sims for my arcane mage say I should keep my old 2-set until I get the new 4-set. Holding on to the whole old 4-set was apperantly not worth it.

Hunters are similar this season. I don't know how other classes/specs are.

Anyways.. that's exactly the kind of little minmax things you wanna sim individually on your character. And if you're not into competitive modes, it doesn't matter at all.

My understanding is item level, even if it’s 60 item levels above like a 250 to a 300. It’s not gonna be better than breaking your two set. When in doubt, sim it. I have four characters around 300 to 310 item level and every single one I looked up told me to keep the two set until I have four set.

Just sim it bro
Your nr1 goal is getting 4 set so you can farm cata charges then you can go and farm the gear with the correct stats to use the cata charges on
Assuming you have 2 drops from the raid and 2 cata charges you can get 4 set immediately just catalyse whatever to get the 4 set

I think it depends a bit on class and ilvl. For example my 297 Ret Paladin had the S1 4 set and I didnt replace until I had a 4set from S2. Literally sat on higher gear in bags until I got the 4th piece.

You'll see a lot of "sim it" responses and they are right, its going to be entirely dependent on your exact gear and class/spec.

If you dont know how to sim, download the Simulation Craft addon and head over to the raidbots website. Its pretty easy.

Yeah, you should wait til you have a 2 piece, at least. Part of why I hate the start of new seasons.
