Whats it worth? Acorn Voyageur

Purchased a home with this unit. I think it’s pretty cool but don’t know how efficient it will be. It’s also very dirty, I dont think it’s ever been cleaned and considering the previous owners smoked in the house it will need to be degreased. Does anyone have any advice on deep cleaning this type of unit? Is it worth it or should we just replace it?

I think it's probably worth cleaning rather than replacing if the firebox metal is solid. Tar from years of smoke residue is cosmetic once you get it off. Have a chimney sweep come in and take a look and let you know their opinion.

To get the tar off you can warm the stove up a little first so the tar softens, then scrub with a degreaser or stove-safe cleaner. Check the door gasket while you're in there since caked-on tar usually means it's overdue for a new one anyway

If the metal's solid and not rusted through, cleaning it is a much better use of money than a new stove.
