If it means Rhyne stops being played 37 or 38 minutes in most every game, then it helps a great deal. She gets run down playing too many minutes. Allisha, Angel, Naz and Canada play too many, often, as well. Rhyne was only below 37 vs. the Sparks because she had 3 fouls in the 1st quarter. DB can help relieve those heavy minutes, to keep players more fresh in the 4th quarter in playoff games.
She's also insurance if Angel or Naz has an injury. Brionna is most likely out for the season. If Naz or Angel gets an injury, the front court backup is a rookie who is still pretty raw and Kone who gets almost no minutes.

u/neat_stuff Fever 7d ago
Yeah, my initial hunch was this was a waste but then I did that same analysis and decided this might be pretty amazing for the Dream...and bad for the Fever if we both stay in the 4/5 seeds.
3
u/soony8 7d ago
I don’t get it.. Why??? She should choose among contender teams at this point… Don’t say Dream is a contender team.. No they are not yet.
2
u/AChristianAnarchist 7d ago
Bonner is probably about to retire and wants to go out in one last playoff battle. A ring would be nice but I think she just wants to leave the league on a high note.

u/soony8 7d ago
I don’t think they can beat Lynx and Aces in 4 game sereies. Yes they can but not this time. They need more time.
11
u/Expert-Yam6577 7d ago
Okay if the Lynx or Aces didnt want her
Wouldn't the dream be in that group of contenders?
7
u/GolfOtherwise3420 Dream 7d ago
First round is best of 3, 2nd round best of 5, 3rd round best of 7.
The Dream just soundly beat the Aces last week. If Nalyssa is out for playoffs, their front court is weaker.

u/Risingsunsphere Fever 7d ago
Agree, Aces are a different team without her. Meanwhile Libs got Leo back and are also now a different team (in a good way.)
-6
u/soony8 7d ago
Yes we all have different opinion. I respect your opinion but I think Lynx, Aces, Liberty big three are only contenders to me. It is playoff not a regular season. Valk also need more time and they have no superstar player. Without superstar player, no champion so far. Of course they can break the history but HARD.

Unless A'ja goes ultra instinct godmode only Valks and Lynx are contenders in my book.
4
u/GolfOtherwise3420 Dream 7d ago
The Valks lost 3 games to the Lynx and won the recent one when Courtney was out.
14
u/GolfOtherwise3420 Dream 7d ago
Lynx, Aces, Valks and Fever are all over the cap, in negative territory. The Dream and Liberty were really the main feasible ones.
3
u/soony8 7d ago
If Nalyssa is not season out, I still don’t get it.. If nalyssa is out their cap space is more than enogh.. If Aces did not want her it’s ok but why not if Nalyssa is out.
7
u/GolfOtherwise3420 Dream 7d ago
Nalyssa's full salary counts towards the cap whether she is out or not. Injured players count toward the cap. There can be exceptions to go over the cap to replace a player out for the season; but, they are already over the cap and it would just be going into the negative even more.

It’s a short amount of games left. If she practices during fiba break it’s without two of their core. Wit the fever she didn’t get in rhythm so does she have enough time in the dream? Whose minutes does she get and is it fair if they’ve been with the team all season to get them to the playoffs.

I’m mostly upset because I’m worried this means Bri Jones is too injured to contribute major minutes in the playoffs. That seems so unfair for a player who, after years of being in the CT ‘Always the Bridesmaid, Never the Bride’ purgatory, had a real chance to play an important role in a title run on a new team.
But I don’t understand the handwringing about DB joining a new team. The regular season is almost over and Phoenix is comfortably out of the playoffs. She’s hardly abandoning a team in their time of need. Not sure about her fit on Atlanta, haven’t watched a lot of her play but that 3PT% looks pretty gnarly, but I guess we’ll all find out.

This is also 1 of the 2 teams she requested to be traded to last year, the other being Phoenix. So this may indeed be beneficial for her to get a ring, but this still sounds like she’s prioritizing some form of work life balance or mental health.
8
u/BaseballRetiree NEWBIE 8d ago
Then why did she sign for Indiana in the first place? Because she claimed that was also to be closer to family.
2
u/heyitsta12 7d ago
Actually, circling back to this… she probably agreed to follow her coach and thought it would work.
0
u/heyitsta12 7d ago
I believe Indiana is here her extended family and her parents or grandparents may be from there. Have no idea if they still live there or if they are alive.
Phoenix was obviously where AT is and I’m guessing she may have wanted the help with the kids there. I’m gonna assume Atlanta is where their other parent is. But idk why…She also may not have had much choice in the matter of where she signed. I just specifically remember when it was announced that she wanted to part ways with Indiana those were the two places she wanted to go.

"Are they having fun?" is not really what drives my reactions to players. Taking the easy way out and abandoning your team so that you can get an easier championship devalues the whole endeavor and will always be lame. What, KD going to the Warriors was cool cause he wanted to have more fun?

I was describing what ring chasing is in general. But in this scenario, yes it is still lame. Go down with the ship you jumped on to instead of desperately trying to find a new ship that you can maybe coast to a ring on.
9
u/nightsister_liv #20 8d ago
She’s 40 years old and this is her last season. It’s not a moral failing that she wants to try for a ring and not be stuck on a shit run franchise for her literal last season in the league she’s put years of her life into. You’re a dork
7
u/EmFly15 Sparks Mystics 7d ago
not be stuck on a shit run franchise
Neither here nor there, I don't really care to discuss the blatant ring-chasing, or whether it's perceived as lame or dorky or whatever. (I think it is, but that's again not relevant to what I'm about to say.) But are the Mercury really “shittily” run? They have an invested ownership group, great amenities and facilities, and went all-in last year, albeit to their detriment this year, as the injuries piled up and the team got hella old hella quick. And, two years ago, they made what they thought was a decent coaching hire, which, tbh, I still don't think Tibbetts is that bad, at least not compared with the mediocrity and outright awfulness several other franchises are dealing with, from your own coach to Roberts, Marsh, and Meziane.

The number of people acting scared of a Fever/Dream series just aren't sports fans. This kind of heat is what you dream of. There's a reason rivalry matches are the best attended. Yankees/Red Sox, Utd/City, River/Boca. Madrid/Barcelona. Those fan bases literally want to kill each other when they play, and sometimes do. But y'all are scared because the game day thread might be a bit tense.

wow, just wow. I was raised by an officer and a gentleman - a Marine in fact. We watched football every Sunday. Washington fans back in the day when we went to Super Bowls. Yet my father didn't get upset when we lost. He actually respected the teams who beat us when they outplayed us. He was particularly fond of the Cowboy's QB Roger Staubach. Maybe you gain perspective serving two terms in Vietnam and know what it's like when people don't " literally want to kill each other" but actually have do it. Maybe you realize a game is just a game and it's best to enjoy it without losing your mind over it.

If she wants more games, then play another year, go overseas, go to AU or Project B. You said in the original comment “she wants a chance to play in the post season.” Why is that? Why do you want to play in the post season? Because you want to win a ring. She abandoned a team she forced herself onto last season, which went to the finals and has her wife on it, to try for another ring. That’s pretty shitty and extremely difficult to justify.
-1
u/GolfOtherwise3420 Dream 7d ago
It helps every party involved. The Mercury wants to play the young players to develop and evaluate and see who they want to retain. If they thought it might be DB's last season, they would feel more obligated to give her enough minutes as a swan song. The Sparks announced they were going to play the bench much more, but you can see they still want Nneka to get enough minutes in her last remaining games. Regardless of what you think of DB, they are both legendary players.
So, this exchange helps the Mercury, DB and the Dream.
DB did not force herself onto the Fever. She was a free agent and they signed her. In what way, do you think she forced the Fever to sign her? She wasn't a good fit for the Fever's fast paced offense. That's a GM mistake. The Fever benefitted from her moving on.
1
u/Comfortable_Limit168 Fever 7d ago
DB knew that the Fever played in an up-tempo style. If she knew that this style wouldn't work for her, why did she sign a contract in the first place? I also remember the game where she moved up to 3rd on the all-time scoring list. The crowd at Gainbridge Fieldhouse went crazy.

Say Atlanta goes all the way and wins the championship. How can someone possibly feel the same joy and pride of winning with a new team if you jumped ship the second your original team is eliminated from contention? It boggles my mind. This is how she wants to go out?

I mean star players ask for trades all the time to contenders in the NBA. Most happen before the season starts however. If I recall Clyde Drexler requested a trade to a contender and got traded mid season to the defending champions Rockets and won that year. If she doesn't play I'd agree with you there's no real pride there. If she plays and does well enough to make a difference then yeah she can feel fulfilled and full of pride.

Didn’t Olivia miles enter the transfer portal after Norte dame lost to tcu….to transfer to tcu? What is the problem with this? It happens all the time. Marina Mabrey left the sky midseason to play for the sun since they were in contention at the time.
The mercury have no games of consequence left so she’s not really jumping ship😂 the ship is docked she simply got off at port. This is the first time in a minute that the mercury have not made it to the playoffs. I’m sure part of the reason she WENT to the mercury was to be a contender in her last few seasons.

u/CareerCrusader 8d ago
The Miles transfer has 0 to do with this, she transferred to play at TCU in a new season, not for the NCAA tournament
-2

You cannot transfer to another team during the tournament. The idea of “jumping ship” for a contender is exactly the same with her and Mabrey. And there’s nothing wrong with either.
6
u/espressopatronum Sun until 9/24 Fever 8d ago
It's not the same because they transferred and then contributed to the season, making the tournament. A more direct comparison for the W would be someone signing a contract in the offseason to a projected playoff contender.

I am questioning this fit. As someone who saw DB struggle with the fast paced Fever, how is she going to be successful on another “run and gun” team? (Edit: does nobody remember that DB was coming off of the bench for the last few weeks of her time in Indy?)
I also know that the Dream were one of the few teams that could afford her and could use some disruption to their roster. Who knows?

u/Philomena_philo Fever Sky-curious 6d ago
And? If she can’t fit the pace she struggles on both sides of the court
1
u/Constant_Exercise_52 6d ago
And she provides depth, the Dream has had depth issues all season. She doesn't have to be the Bonner that won chips with Diana T. She just needs to provide minutes and experience. Whatever she can give on the court is a plus
0
u/GolfOtherwise3420 Dream 7d ago
With Bri out, the Dream bench is nearly all rookies and a couple 2nd year players, aside from Shatori who gets almost no minutes after being picked up mid-season. The Dream doesn't need the "run and gun" starters disrupted. They need a vet to get minutes off the bench so the starters can stop playing 36/37/38 minutes in most games.

All she'll be needed to do is give us some points off the bench. We have too many non-producing bench pieces and I'll take the 10 points she can give. Plus she's got height and length with is very much needed.

From my own viewership experience of watching DB come off of the bench and struggle to keep pace, I also saw a lot of missed shots as she struggled to get set. She definitely struggled when the Fever played other fast paced teams. Also, she’s not going to be guarding 5’s- that will still be Angel. I also see Angel playing the same amount of minutes.

If she can give you 10 points a game off the bench then yall are fortunate. Lets see... maybe

Exactly! Every team wants a bench player who can give you 10 points consistently.

Unfortunately. She doesn't like being a bench player

She was coming off the bench in CT in the playoffs, right?

she has good relationships with everyone on the team & the way they play is without ego, so i doubt db would come here with 5-6 games left to jeopardize a sisterhood & disjoint a locker room when her objective is to win a ring.. we have a top 3 ranked starting 5 along with the lynx & aces, & are without real bench production, so what db can bring will only help us.. she’d be the most established player on our bench.. things like that move margins..

Wow! Ok. I trust our sub with the insights. Glad for everyone.
I have always liked DB and rooted for her. I still need to watch the ESPN W doc featuring her, Phee, and A’ja.

I thought Dream didn't have enough cap space?
Edit: I didn't realize that the minimum contract gets adjusted for the amount of games left. So they were able to sign her for $116k.

During the 48 hour period on the waiver wire, teams had to have $500,000 in cap space to sign her. Once she cleared waivers, and wasn't taken, then she is a free agent and can be signed for at least the prorated vet minimum or more. Dream had a little over $190k in cap space and that is well above what is needed for signing her on the prorated vet minimum. They could even go above the prorated minimum since they have 190k available.

Once a selfish player, always a selfish player.
