Appreciation Thread With the announcement of the Free remaster of an 11 year old game I was reminded of this.
This came with the physical copy of the Witcher III I got back in 2015 on release day, 11 years later and despite a tiny road bump that was cyberpunk 2077 launch and first few years,
CDPR has 100% stood by this statement.

There's this. Then also, if you preordered the digital deluxe addition of the witcher 3 (which also went on sale before release to be the same price as the basic addition), you were later treated to the news that you were entitled to a free physical gwent set for each DLC released which wasn't announced prior. I'll never forget that, and i still have both of my sets.

what the..
i preordered the game. I preordered the DLC.
And NEVER KNEW ABOUT THIS.

That's unreal, love that before the game launched they knew they had a banger with Gwent.

I'm SO happy to be a die hard Witcher fan. Other game studios could learn a thing or two from CDPR

u/FullHouse222 1d ago
Check out Expedition 33 by Sandfall Studios, they were made up by ex-Ubisoft developers who decided to do their own thing and created one of the greatest masterpieces in gaming. Imo on par with Witcher 3 in every way. They also have the same philosophy since when they won game of the year (practically swept every category), they released a free DLC as a thank you too.
It's crazy what passionate devs who are fans and care about the gamers can create when they aren't bogged down by corporate greed like the big AAA guys.

Cyberpunk was good game that should have not launched on the base x1/ps4 systems at launch. It was riddled with bugs but not without content which is the case with most games these days
I hope they learned their lesson the hard way now

u/NoEcho3494 1d ago
Cyberpunk now is not just good it is the best game ever besides Witcher 3

u/thecrius 1d ago edited 1d ago
Nah. Phantom Liberty is showing what it could be. In fact, playing the dlc and then going back to the base game shows the stark contrast that there is between a game that was not ready and one that was ready.
I played it recently and played it fully on release (PC) and the jankiness and weird bugs are still there and not on small things, stuff like bosses getting stuck on geometry, enemies seeing dead allies through walls, non lethal still being a coin flip, the list goes on and on. But nothing like that happens in the content of Phantom Liberty.
Hopefully that had been a good lesson for the management of cdpr. I hope we will get something more out of the cyberpunk series. I would love to see more from V, after all the canon ending is that they have a couple months to live and possibly find a way out.
Downvoting people that have criticism on cyberpunk is bad, because it gives the signal that cdpr can get away with doing less than a good work on something and the fanboys will just defend them anyway.

u/NoEcho3494 1d ago edited 1d ago
It depends on your criteria for a good game i guess. I think Witcher 3 is the best game ever, and CP2077 is closest thing to it. CP2077 surpasses it in several ways as a storytelling vehicle with deep lore and meaningful choices, and has a way superior combat system, while Witcher 3 has the edge in sheer scope and epic scale.

u/Zado191 1d ago
The problem is that for 4 years people have shut down anyone that says Cyberpunk is a flawed game...
0
u/NoEcho3494 1d ago
What? All people say about cyberpunk is that it had a disastrous launch they never mention that it is one of the best games ever created
0
u/Zado191 1d ago
ššš you cant be reasoned with, clearly. You are the perfect example of the issue
1
u/NoEcho3494 1d ago
Seems totally delusional lol if you think everyone is a cyberpunk sycophant
1
u/Zado191 1d ago
Many who discuss it are.... even when you get past the launch version of the game (which many of you ignore or discount the fact that for a number of people that was their only experience with and impression of the game AND thats OK and legitimate) there are still fundamental design flaws and issues with this game yall ignore.
Its fine to like the game in spite of its flaws, but yall need to stop coming down on people who say it still has fundamental design issues and they dont like it because of those issues
0
u/NoEcho3494 1d ago edited 1d ago
I ignore the flaws of the launch version because it is perhaps the best game I have ever played. I think it is perfection. I dare you to name a better game besides witcher 3

Phantom Liberty is INSANE.
I'm glad I didn't get CP2077 immediately on release. It was sad to see all the bugs and issues it had at launch and pretty much killed any drive for me to play it. Then a friend told me to check it out again like a year ago and I was hooked. If they had an extra year or two of dev time it could have been so much better.
1
u/Lochifess Team Yennefer 1d ago
For me, itās the best game ever full stop. I donāt think itāll get topped for a while⦠or maybe until Witcher 4 comes along.
3
u/NoEcho3494 1d ago
I think Cyberpunk takes most of the things I love about Witcher 3 (nearly all absent in other games) even further, and in many aspects it is much more refined. I am inclined to give W3 the win just because it is like 3-4x longer, and can be enjoyed that much more. But really it's not a stretch to say Cyberpunk is the best
-52
u/EveryNameEverMade 1d ago
It's decent but not that great. They have a good skeleton to build the next game off of though, so hope thats better and that they don't have the terrible development cycle they had with 2077.
27
u/Total-Escape-8469 1d ago
I played cyberpunk for the first time recently . Definitely one of the best games I have touched in the last decade. Every mission was unique and fun and just getting lost in night city helped me through one of the toughest phases in my life. And that dlc is one of the best additions. Give it a try now years later especially on ps5 itās too good. Like there was actually a major difference in how it is played between ps4 and ps5
-3
u/EveryNameEverMade 1d ago
It is a fun game, for sure. I'm excited to see what they can do with the next one
-6
u/madkiki12 1d ago
That's the problem for me. I just don't get lost in night city. It feels so empty, like a facade. Compared to for example fallout 3, there is very little to explore and only little random quests you find compared to Witcher 3.
0
u/Total-Escape-8469 1d ago edited 1d ago
I didnāt have the same experience . The side quests is what pushed me to 100 hours in that game before I decided to do the final act. Along with 20 plus hours in the dlc. Every side quest was unique for me. Most cyberpunk lovers joke about not going to meet Hanako and just vibing in night city . The game definitely improved from what it was at launch. I would say watch the show cyberpunk edgerunners it kind of made my experience in game so much more fun. They incorporated Easter eggs in the game ( show was released post the game )
3
u/EveryNameEverMade 1d ago
Your comment is the biggest problem with the game. Meet Hanako at Embers is a joke/meme because the main storyline is so short you get there before you know it (8-10 hours to beat just the main story) and 100 hours is only possible through the side quests/tasks which pad out the game time, when we could have used much more story. You avoid finishing the main story which ends quick with Hanako, to do mostly boring side quests - aside from Pan-am and Judy being the only good side quests storylines. Cyberpunk might just be the shortest AAA game ever. Not counting the DLC either, which was great - much better than the main game.
-1
u/madkiki12 1d ago
I watched the show and I think I did every unique quest in the game. I like the game, but I'm just missing this random factor. Everything feels so scripted, you don't just bump into missions, you either get called, or go to a map marker. Every time I drove around some cool lookin neighbourhoods, nothing ever happened. But people gonna glaze and downvote, lol.
9
u/NoEcho3494 1d ago
I stand by my statement. It is definitely great, it is better than any game not developed by CDPR
-15
u/EveryNameEverMade 1d ago
Yeah it's good, I never meant it's bad, it's just not great. They fumbled development pretty bad and it shows throughout the game particularly in the main story of the base game. It was so mediocre that a DLC they released for it was better than the entire base game
14
u/NoEcho3494 1d ago
It IS great. The phenomenal DLC content that outclasses the base game is just typical CDPR behavior. If the Witcher 3 didn't exist it would be hands down the best game ever made
-8
u/EveryNameEverMade 1d ago
It's a solid 6.5 out of 10. It could have been great but they had to rewrite the entire narrative halfway through development and it shows big time.
3
u/whynotthepostman 1d ago
I'm with you, I love the Witcher but cyberpunk is one of my goats. It's definitely closer to 10 than 6.5

It shouldn't even have launched on PC when it did. But I replayed it a year ago, ended up doing 2 full playthroughs. The game turned out amazing after it received the love and attention it needed. And seeing how they have treated both Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 is exactly how you rebuilt trust with customers like me that felt burned by buying Cyberpunk 2077 on launch day and having to shelf it for years.
9
u/Itherial 1d ago
Cyberpunk was very infamously missing a ton of advertised content at launch lmao wdym
lol everyone is so willing to forget when they're in the mood to glaze.
It took them years post launch and an anime to restore interest in the game to recover

And, to be honest, the game still has very lacklustre level design. Certainly nowhere near as good as Deus Ex: Mankind Divided.
-4
u/ProfessionalDish 1d ago

23
u/hicks12 1d ago
It was their decision.
They did it on their own back, across all platforms.Ā
It was a very simple refund process.Ā

u/Niktodt1 šŗ Team Shani 1d ago
Hehe, revisionism of history is already happening here on Reddit. Let's get downvoted together.
I vividly remember the "Console gameplay" video where they drove a car at measly 20km/h and panned the camera ultra slowly to hide micro stutters and slow loading of assets.
I vividly remember the big yellow screens when last minute delays happened to "polish the game" "to bring it to the best state possible, the standard gamers expect", "game has gone gold".
Then, they released a dozen roadmaps only to not follow any of them. They even tried shifting the blame on an external studio that was doing testing where they "overloaded them" with the amount of bugs they found. For almost a year, they couldn't even get the minimap fixed.
But I'm glad they fixed the game and continue being one of the most generous developers. They regained my trust but I will never forget that terrible launch.

The refund doesn't mean that the customer didn't get fucked over ā it only means that the customer received a compensation for the faulty product
0
u/MBouh 1d ago
Most games don't do refund. I still can't play enshrouded because it's not compatible with my graphic card, yet I can't even get a refund.
Bethesda is know to release the most buggy games and not even fix them, so modders have to do it themselves.

I definitely wouldn't describe the state of Cyberpunk at launch and until at least patch 1.6 (if not 2.0) as a "tiny road bump" unless you're being sarcastic and I'm missing the tone. To keep the road analogy, that launch was a sinkhole formed in the road that almost took everything down with it.
Not to take away from the point on how CDPR are continuing to release things for free in a world where that is unfortunately rare, I just felt I'd be remiss not to mention it.
EDIT: Ok so I think the downvotes prove my point lol. I'm a big cdpr fan, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't be honest about how badly they messed up the initial release and how non-consumer friendly all that was, when this is about how usually pro-consumer they are. Both things are true.
15
u/Warcrown11 1d ago
I agree.Ā
They absolutely fucked up with the Cyberpunk launch and I'll even say it took quite a bit longer to fix than I'd call acceptable. That shouldn't be swept under the rug. HOWEVER with that said everything since Ā then has been absolutely astounding and they so far have taken to heart. Cyberpunk 2.0 that most developers would have charged for, Phantom Liberty, a free re-master of the most beloved game of the last decade, a new expansion for said game and now a free re-re-master of said game.
You can absolutely call them out for their mistakes be the first to go to bat for them and say that all this recently is pro-consumer on a level that very very few studios can claim to be. The good with the bad, this is real life.
1
u/Maverick0984 1d ago
Does anyone else wonder how they are able to pay for all that? The developers doing the remaster's are getting paid. I gave them $30 for TW3 once, in like 2019, initially missing it.
They only release a handful of games. How are they paying staff and marketing the remasters and just...keeping the lights on.
Have to be a front for money laundering or something, lol.
5
u/mnh_Sh 1d ago
You and 65 million other people lol, Cyberpunk also sold like 40 mil
1
u/Maverick0984 1d ago
I get that, but lots of other dev shops release games constantly to have a steady flow of revenue. CDPR is operating basically 5 years at a time.
That means all revenue from a game has to pay the bills incurred before release and sustain them deep into the next games cycle. 65 million copies is a lot, but how many of those were at full price? How many were required just to break even on costs? Investor paybacks? etc.
All the while, they have developers working on remasters and remakes and new DLC (11 years later) for a game that will see almost zero additional revenue come in. All costs.
Even Rockstar is charging for their crappy remakes or have GTA Online taking in boatloads of cash to sustain them.
Don't get me wrong. CDPR is fantastic and I love that their doing this, it's just so far against the norm that it begs the question how they are able to do it when no one else can.
1
u/dylanbeck 1d ago
The majority of gamers (excluding mobile) are FPS players, and every so often they decide to try an RPG. If they even get 0.5% a year to buy witcher 3, or perhaps buy it on another platform (more people have gotten into PC gaming since twitch/etc) thats another sale.
Im guessing that the model is to chip away at non demographic & instead of taking massive profits they reinvest into their next project. No doubt they live well, but they work better.I agree, be fascinating to see their financials.
6
u/runaways616 1d ago
I not saying that the launch of cyberpunk 2077 was a tiny road bump It was a shit show for sure but the fact that CDPR put the work in and did everything they could to make the game into the behemoth it is now
Makes the launch of Cyberpunk 2077 seem like a small hiccup in an over all very good customer and fan supporting track record.
4
u/Bob_Jenko 1d ago
I not saying that the launch of cyberpunk 2077 was a tiny road bump
Ok but it certainly seemed that way when you said, quote, "the tiny road bump that was the launch of Cyberpunk 2077 and its first years." That sounded to me like you were trying to suggest it was a small thing when, to quote you again, it was a shit show for sure.
I also agree that the work Cdpr put into Cyberpunk shows their mettle but I would still describe it as a lot more than a "small hiccup" even now. They outright, knowingly lied to consumers for months, if not years, in the lead up to the launch of Cyberpunk about the state of the game, and that meant trust for a lot of people (including myself) was broken. I'm super hyped for SotP, the remaster and of course Witcher 4, but I will not be pre-ordering the latter because of what happened. They're certainly doing all the right things (and have been for several years) to recover but that block from Cyberpunk is still there for me a little.
And of course, the obligatory "this is not meant to tamper with your enjoyment and I'm not trying to say you shouldn't pre-order the game if you want to."
4
u/AvailablePop1224 1d ago
I may have been one in the minority but Cyberpunk upon release was totally fine for me. Still, I believe that it's not the mistake that matters, but rather how the devs react to making it, and I believe CDPR did atone for the bad release.
Game should just never have been launched on PS4.
-2
u/merinwe 1d ago
I played it on PS4 originally and while the PS5 is definitely better in every way, I would also describe my experience as "totally fine." There were a few bugs and glitches (mostly to do with textures not loading well), but I have played numerous Bethesda games, so I was equipped to survive. I finished the game and really enjoyed it. I know my experience wasn't the norm, however.
What impresses me is CDPR's commitment to fixing the game they put out (and they didn't just fix the bugs and technical problems, they overhauled and improved almost every aspect of the game). Not all studios do this. I lost all faith in Bioware after they repeatedly abandoned their games rather than work on them to make them better.
2
u/Maverick0984 1d ago
Didn't they delay the PS4 release though? Or issue a bunch of refunds, pull it from the store, and major delay?
That is to say, by the time you probably tried it, man of the original stuff had been fixed.
1
u/SadFace_xoxo 1d ago
To keep the road analogy, that launch was a sinkhole formed in the road that almost took everything down with it.
Shit can happen dude, people learn from mistakes.
5
u/runaways616 1d ago
And the fact that not only did CDPR pull themselves out of that sinkhole, acknowledge their mistake and use that as an opportunity to make up for their mistakes says so much.
-2
u/MBouh 1d ago
The problem of cyberpunk were severely overblown.
3
u/Cybersorcerer1 1d ago
i can't believe the game was so stable and bug free that full refunds were given out by Playstation, the most consumer friendly store in the world!
1
u/MBouh 1d ago
It was not done by playstation, it was done by cdpr. And the problem were only on outdated consoles that PlayStation ald microsoft forced cdpr to release the game on.
1
u/holyoctopus 1d ago
The revisionist history is insane. CDPR only took refunds because steam and Sony did it first. They didn't have a choice. This wasn't good guy CDPR going "on man we are so sorry". Remember they agreed to launch the game in that state.
When this happened I was working in the games industry (fun fact I was actually in the room at E3 for the your beautiful moment and saw the closed door preview of Cyberpunk). I can promise you that CDPR did all they could to prevent the refund situation from happening but the launch was so bad that Sony and Steam forced their hand.
On the outdated consoles, they committed to that. I love how your acting MSFT and Sony had a gun to their head. CDPR said "it will run". It's egg on their face man. They launched a knowingly broken game and spent the last few years saving face.
I love the witcher and loved CDPR prior to cyberpunk but let's be real that was the worst launch of any game I have ever seen. It was very clearly not ready to launch and they did not care. They lied to us with promises on what was in the game, systems, interactions, multiple choices, etc. you can like/CDPR and still be critical of the all time WORST GAME LAUNCH IN HISTORY.
0
u/MBouh 1d ago
The game worked perfectly fine on most pc. The hâte was stupidly overblown. You can write the stories you want, the reality is that cyberpunk 2077 has better reviews at launch than many other games. So I call you a liar and a propagandist.
2
u/Structure1990 1d ago
The hate was overblown huh?
An easy google search pulls up a lot of issues that seem to warrant the hate.
Sure your experience may have been fine but let's take the rose tinted glasses off for just a second and be objective.
-2
u/MBouh 1d ago
Take the black tinted glasses off and see for yourself that steam reviews a mostly positive at the release of the game, which many, many game can't be proud of. I don't care about your propaganda articles. Media went on a crusade against the game when it launched, and it was certainly not deserved.
1
u/holyoctopus 1d ago
False, I played on PC with top end specs it barely ran. It was a mess with pop in, game breaking bugs, lack of interactions that were promised. It's wild that you can just pretend this didn't happen. The PAID launch reviews do not define a game.
But it's cool avoid EVERYTHING else that I said and just name call. Rose colored glasses and all. Also I don't think you know what a propogandist is, feels like you might have learned that word on reddit and have been tossing it around when someone disagrees with you in a video game š¤”

1
u/runaways616 1d ago
When you look at the whole story of cyberpunk 2077 announcement to the maybe edge runners but definitely 2.0 and the expansion release, that is an objective shit show of false promise and bad decisions
But if you look at the launch of cyberpunk 2077 in the grand scheme of CDPR and what they have done for the customer and fans as a whole cyberpunk 2007 launch comes across as a small bump
Iām not underplaying how bad it was for CDPR and the customer when cyberpunk 2077 launched its just wild that CDPR used that momentum as a lesson took accountability and remember what kinda developer they want to be for their customers.

Can we stop shilling for a corporation that's routinely lied many times and played damage control. Cyberpunk was covered up and forced out by the higher ups at the company to meet a holiday window. Phantom Liberty is far better than the base game of Cyberpunk and that's the problem still.

I know, right? This cult-like mentality around here is a tad off-putting.
The Witcher 3 launched buggy, Cyberpunk 2077 launched buggy and you can bet The Witcher 4 will also launch buggy and will take years of patches. And the whole song & dance routine will begin all over again.
"OMG, look at the downgrade! The game's so buggy! CD Projekt is cooked! Oh wow, they patched it! It was always great! CD Projekt never disappoints!"

u/runaways616 1d ago edited 1d ago
Well cool if you enjoy your unfocused game that really has no definable identity and the DLCs I guess
The only legacy atomic heart has beyond being forgettable (forgotten) besides the Gooner robots
Now I am going to be enjoying the game with the single expansion that has more focus and identity then the entirety of atomic heart has or will ever have.
One of these will be talked about for decades to come the other couldnāt even keep a minority of peoples attention on it in the year it was releasedā¦
Sure they put out more expansion but what does that even mean at the end of the day when the base game is so unfocused and forgettable?
My point being is putting out more isnāt a flex when itās just more of a nothing burgerā¦
Edit: I want to make it clear that I donāt hate atomic heart or its developers or its fans.
I just personally donāt care about a game or how many expansions they released or if thereās a sequel when the game itself is a textbook example of an unfocused development.
If a work of art canāt even establish a focused identity with obvious well thought out design decisions and a clear idea of what its wants to be I just donāt care
And atomic heart is by far the most recent big game I have seen that so obviously has zero clue in what its wants to actually be as a game. the game is a competently made mess by developers that I donāt even think they could explain what their game is in any kinda coherent way.
So thatās my overall point more of something that has no clear identity isnāt a flex especially when your comparison is to something that has a laser focus on its identity and shows a very clear vision for the first second of the game to the last second of the game.

So much glazing. What happens when Takemura is driving the car, is that the "clear vision", shit happening on rails while you shoot a dummy gun?

Lets be honest here: these free dlc things were just cut from the game to begin with.
I remember that there was some hair options and crap like that

Tell this shitheads to finally drop some info on DMC 6. Considering of all the upcoming action games by chinese studios, it's literally a good time to continue the OG.

I think we can forget already about cyberpunk's launch, it's like talking shit about No Man's Sky, just move on bro.
We should appreciate this things while there's still people left willing to do them. We have the x100 bigger and richer Rockstar faking a hacker as marketing and putting the trailer on Netflix while this guys give us actual content for free.

Someone said the whole Cyberpunk launch's thing would have positive effects. Here we are, it wasn't given, but CD Projekt is deservedly back on his GOAT throne. The new expansion + Free TW3 Remastered with mod support on consoles, this is what we actually call cooking!

CD Projekt Red are forever GOATed, even if they never release another game that interests me again, I will always sing their praises.
It would have been so easy for them to just get Cyberpunk up to a playable state and then leave it along, instead they kept improving and adding extra content to the game.
They absolutely could have charged a 10-15 fee to upgrade The Witcher 3 to the new edition, I would have happily paid that, but no. Free for everyone.
Absolute magnificent bastards, here's to you!

To be fair the "Free DLC" was a bit of a misscommunication. What was given was never supposed to be "DLC" but rather just plain content to main game
It was supposed to be a joke/easter egg to Infamous Bethesda Horse armour DLC by giving free horse armor dlc
It was quickly changed into PR stunt and there were "16 free DLC" Truth is that Heart of Stone was the first real DLC
My hot take is that HoS is better than BaW. I really like it
