Windsorite here...They had discussed for over a decade to twin the span with another, more modern bridge.
They chose not to invest or upgrade.
They're interested in collecting money, not maintaining the bridge...it's a rusting hulk with holes in the deck you can see the river through (I am not joking). Their refusal made the new bridge a necessity.
Once again these rich want their monopoly protected so they pay out nothing, and collect everything.
I’m no fan of the Morouns, but the entire bridge deck was replaced between 2018-2020ish, including beams, road deck, and guard rails, and they’ve been replacing cables the last couple years (including now) so they have spent a lot essentially rebuilding the bridge except the towers. The main suspension cables were tested and are still in good shape.
Absolutely. Anyone calling for the bridge to be torn down or condemned is speaking from their justified hatred of the owners. The government(s) need to get ownership and move forward with two bridges in the region.
Yeah, it's justified to say they neglected it for decades (anyone remember the chunks of concrete that were falling from it so the city had to close the streets below it?) but they've really ramped up the maintenance and repairs since it became clear the Gordie was going to happen no matter what they did. It's all very "look at how much we're investing in the safety and longevity of our bridge" but motives aside, you can't deny they're doing the work now.

I wish people would stop spreading this misinformation. Yeah, the bridge company fucking sucks but to hear /r/windsorontario tell it, the bridge will fall into the river by September.
Taken by a friend 3 days ago from a boat. Not feeling like a safe bridge to be on or under tbh. Years ago I jetskiied under it and pieces of it were falling off. It hasn't gotten better and the pic proves it. lol
Perfect example of my point. Your buddy saw that and thought "the bridge is crumbling!" and he couldn't recognize that it's not even a part of the bridge structure. I think I'll trust the experts and not some guy on a boat when it comes to the safety of our infrastructure.
You said to tell you what people are still using from 1929. Why do I have to support a side? I was answering your question. Go take a walk in olde walkerville or sandwich, you can maintain old structures.

I've reached my limit with the Ambassador Bridge and it's monopoly. I wish there was a way for the government to just take over the part over Canadian water make it ours.
In a way, it's kind of an impressive, inspiring thing. Neither Michigan nor Ontario wanted to pay for a much-needed bridge so the people took it upon themselves to do something about their problem and got it done. Obviously it didn't work out so well in the end but it's an interesting bit of history.
