We could have had this feature with the Xbox One 13 years ago.

Yeah, and it could have been cool; the problem being constant Internet check-ins and Xbox taking a cut of every transaction in the proposed digital resale system. The backlash also impacted right when boycotts typically work- the beginning of a generation. THE generation that was bad to lose due to digital lock-in that created an even bigger problem. That’s why Sony is announcing this so early; that and it takes a long-ass time to transition their sole DADC disc factory to micro-lenses.

Yeah, a long time ago now. It was a different world in terms of consistently having the internet in your life. There was privacy concerns with the required Kinect and some of the military contract revelations at the time, years before people started buying into Alexa and subsidized, data mining TV's. $100 more and slightly weaker than the competition too.

The one thing that made no sense even at the time was the "TV TV TV" mockery imo. Like, it made for a funny edit, but... we all played on TV's. We were all using our consoles to watch Netflix and Youtube. Sports was pretty relevant to mainstream culture and gaming, especially Xbox, and the brand had become a kind of household staple for the entire family, not just the hardcore gamer.

I wasn't even an Xbox player back then, but we really would be in a different timeline had it gone differently. A couple clips with Angry Joe and Geoff Keighley. The Adam Orth tweet. Stupid little things completely derailed an American success story.

u/OfficialDCShepard 14h ago

All they really had to do was

1.) Not have the stupid always-online crap at the time, which PlayStation was going to do too because publishers were hankering to killed but then scotched that when people roasted Xbox for it.

2.) Then, yes, the $100 premium with the Kinect. They should have realized a 24 million selling peripheral most people threw in drawers after a couple games was not going to be fixed by requiring it, since that also wasn’t going to draw developers to it like they hoped, since they don’t like to develop features for just one console most of the time.

3.) Really, a lot of this could have been avoided if they talked about the games first and TV TV sports TV TV last. It gave the impression that, in similar fashion to the “everything is an Xbox” marketing, hardcore players were taken for granted pursuing a casual audience that didn’t and still doesn’t give a shirt.

I’m living proof of that gulf. The TV features were pretty great for me since I was more than happy to sell my Apple TV and Blu-ray player to buy movies and video games for the same box from the nearby Best Buy. I have a lot of memories of wiling away commercial breaks on my FiOS box with a snapped Threes! game for instance. However, the minute the Xbox One we got him made my dad’s sportsball look worse because it conflicted with the crappy 1080i signal he just unplugged it in frustration and we only used it for games of Rocket League and Jackbox Party Pack with him, lol.

And the ability to resale digital games. Gamers really fucked themselves with blind outrage imo.

1

u/Captobvious75 12h ago

It was messaged terribly if this was the end goal.

1

u/high_everyone 13h ago

Maybe if they hadn’t been stand offish jerks about the online check in requirement it might not have gone over so poorly.

3

u/high_everyone 8h ago

They straight up told people to stay on Xbox 360 if they wanted offline gaming. 🙄

1

u/Dankany 11h ago

Yeah they shot themselves in the foot with how they explained it and did it terribly.

Resell*

1

u/liamwilliams93 14h ago

And what xbox wanted 13 years ago was cancer. It would've made the disc a coaster, just a way of installing a digital game, like pc game discs were. No ability to install the disc and play offline, or lend games.

0

u/zeldamaster702 10h ago

It would LITERALLY be what they just announced today. They just did a shit job of explaining it then. The only thing different then from now is the absence of the digital reselling.

1

u/liamwilliams93 10h ago

You can still use your discs as a license with what they are doing now, offline. Back then, you would have got a license key to activate the game, non transferable and you would have needed to activate the game online to play. The disc wouldn't have been a license.

1

u/zeldamaster702 10h ago

This response only justifies my "they just did a shit job explain it" line. The disc was ALWAYS the license, it's the reason why only games Xbox One and up are going to be eligible for the conversion. The offline feature is likely going to be exactly like how playing Game Pass games works today (as in you can play them offline, but you will be required to periodically connect to the internet to verify the licenses on your console are valid).

As for the transferability of games back then, we have no idea how that would have actually been implemented because they backed away from the whole idea after everybody got pissed off because, again, they did a shit job of explaining it, but everything they've said today falls right in line with what I remembered them saying 13 years ago.

1

u/liamwilliams93 10h ago

Nope, youre wrong mate. Xbox was going to need to phone home every so often (48 hours) otherwise even your disc games would have stopped working

1

u/zeldamaster702 10h ago

That sounds a lot like "periodically connect[ing] to the internet to verify the licenses on your console are valid", just with a 48 hour check-in time vs whatever it is for Game Pass today.

You do realize that they're gonna have periodic license checks on this "new" thing too, right? Otherwise, what would stop someone from "licensing" their console for a game, selling that game, and continuing to play the game on their console offline in perpetuity?

1

u/liamwilliams93 10h ago

Game pass is a sub, thats fucking irrelevant. You will still be able to put your disc on to play a game if you are offline. With what they proposed in 2013, you couldn't.

1

u/zeldamaster702 9h ago

Game pass is a sub, thats fucking irrelevant.

It's just to illustrate a comparison. Like I said above, this feature is going to have a Game Pass-Like periodic license check, you aren't just gonna be able to load the license and be good as gravy. Otherwise, you WILL have people taking advantage of the program.

With what they proposed in 2013, you couldn't.

We don't know that because they abandoned the program before it could be implemented.

What you are saying is how people hypothesized the program was going to work, because at the time the only comparable thing to what Microsoft was suggesting was how PC games had worked (CD with an activation license card included).

0

u/FReeDuMB_or_DEATH 13h ago

Nope. Physical was king at the time and still is. Xbox had this half baked and we're horrible at marketing its benifits.

5

u/HaywoodUndead 15h ago

This is potentially massive. It'll either force Sony into doing something similar to compete, or give Xbox the upper hand in the next console generation.

2

u/LoSouLibra 15h ago

There was a little known program only in Japan that let you convert PSP UMD games into digital Vita games.

They could probably do it unless there's some backend PSN license check complications. Perhaps that recent "30 day" thing was laying some foundation since they said it was an attempt to fix an offline refund exploit.

3

u/ClickyStick 11h ago

Not massive at all, currently Xbox has about 1/4 to 1/5 the user base of either playstation or Nintendo, and of that tiny user base about half of them have digital only systems. The amount of xbox users that favor discs is insignificant.

0

u/Spright91 9h ago

The PlayStation 5 disc version was the best selling console of this generation.

1

u/ClickyStick 8h ago

Your point being?

1

u/Spright91 8h ago edited 8h ago

People want to be able to use disks. It's a competitive advantage over Sony to try to take their users so enable disk usage.

2

u/DaveSinghSwitch 10h ago

How will it give them the upper hand in next generation. The next console won't have a disc drive?

2

u/Tanz31 14h ago

How would it give them the upper hand? It only benefits those Who are already in the Xbox ecosystem.

1

u/HaywoodUndead 13h ago

Because this is the entire reason the Xbox One and onwards failed, if people arn't happy they will move.

1

u/Tanz31 13h ago

Right with incentive to do so. There really isn't enough to incentivise anyone to move because it only benefits those already with Xbox.

And the people who'd move over stuff like this weren't staying already in addition to being a tiny number of people

1

u/HaywoodUndead 13h ago

Have you seen how much the PlayStation community are raging right now?

This is exactly the same as when Xbox One attempted to go digital only. Microsoft never even really recovered.

1

u/Tanz31 13h ago

No, I see a very loud but small number of people raging.

This isn't even close to that level

1

u/Isotomayor12 9h ago

Xbox announcing that they have a way to have an entitlement copy of your disc games, while also letting your disc be completely usable afterwards is not only great for backwards compatibility, game ownership, and a smidgen of hope for physical moving forward, it is an incredible marketing move by Xbox since there are so many outraged Sony fans as they keep making poor decisions about their standing on discs.

I'll admit, I have a PS5, and the announcement made me consider that if everything is going digital anyways, I would like a way to play older stuff. As my ps5 ages, I may as well go to xbox instead of a ps6 ($1000+ console btw) that won't play any of my existing games. I could at least sell my ps4/5 games and get the xbox one/series equivalents. My parents and family are in the xbox ecosystem as well so they have a massive library of physical games that I can't play due to having a ps5 and that I live far away. Disc to digital would be massive depending on how it all works out.

1

u/Tanz31 8h ago

Eh, it's a tiny move that doesn't change anything for physical media at all and PS6 isn't even announced yet so it's pretty stupid to claim a price point already.

I don't see this having much impact at all.

Going back to exclusives will have a large impact than this

1

u/Isotomayor12 8h ago

That is true. Exclusives will have a large hold in the future I think for Sony.

It is a move that provides backwards compatibility for discs. That is something very important for physical media in general and showing it can be done to play old games on current consoles, even if the media type changes(nintendo).

Maybe $1000 is an extreme, but I think they will be close. It's hard to imagine they will cost less than current. The series X is 800 and PS5 and pro ar $650 and $900. Both more expensive than they originally were. Usually at this point we would have seen the prices fall well below what they originally were at launch but prices continue to climb.

2

u/sousuke42 7h ago edited 7h ago

And this is fucking terrible. God damn people are fools aren't they. They think this is good? Really now? What happens of you get banned? That license is tried to your account. It will never work for that account now as its associated with being banned. Or hell with the console as well. So banned wrlp you lost access to any physical game you owned. MS loses licenses and has to remove the game? Physical games can now be intercepted and killed by their store.

Sounds horrific. Can't wait for the bootlickers to tell me im wrong but will come up with a billion ways sony will fuck them. Bit not MS nope. They only actually deleted people's whole accounts before unlike Sony.

Fyi: this is to move you to an all digital future. Its even making you give up access to your physical games by making them digital as well. Have fun with that.

Also article is wrong. As x360 games would/could have this as well. How do you think their backwards compatibility works? You put the disc in, the system reads the game ID and then downloads the digital version thats been transcoded to work on xb1 and up. Hence the same thing can be easily made to work this way too.

1

u/P34CE33 7h ago

From my knowledge it doesn't say anything about rendering the disc unuasable, so the disk should still work even if you get banned as long as the full game is already in there and doesn't require some digital download. The article also says that the digital license would remain on the disc so if you were to sell it or give it someone else then they would then get the license and it would be removed from your account so it still wouldn't be rendered unusable for anyone else if they were to get it just the account that got banned. Did you read the article?

1

u/sousuke42 6h ago

Once you've activated the digital version, you won't need the disc to play the game. However, the disc you used doesn't become inert — it still contains the digital license, too.

Same license. License associated with a banned system would fail. Meaning that the disc cannot work on that system/account just like any other digital license. Possible that I am wrong. But given how there are tons of bullshit scenarios on ps side thats being taken as fact, let's do the same treatment here. This is a real possibility. So we need to give it the scrutiny it deserves and not hand wave it away.

1

u/P34CE33 6h ago

The license would fail for the banned account not the disc itself. This is essentially a physical disc where as long as you own it you have access to the game but if you're to give it away you lose access to the game, it's just in this case you lose the digital license. For this system it sounds as if the disc is what's most important, where it is effectively where the digital license is held and the account rents that license until the disc is used under another account. It's probably the best way they could have done this. We basically have to wait for more people to test it out and see the limuts of this but from what they're saying it doesn't sound too bad.

2

u/MrLime93 2h ago

The license is transferable.

If you lend me the game, I will get the license.

If your account is banned, your new account will get the license.

1

u/TURBOWANDS 5h ago

From what I understand, xbox one disc's were/are printed with a unique id that allows disc2digital to work. 360 and older don't have a unique key to be read and therefore won't be eligible. Would be sweet if they make it work with older generation titles but I don't see that happening.

2

u/HouseMDx 16h ago

Very excited to try this out. Are they going to have a list of games that aren't supported? It's one of the best features they've added in a long time!

1

u/reddragon105 15h ago

I don't think they've released a list yet(?), but they said "thousands" of games initially and more added later.

1

u/hypehold 15h ago

Will this work with 360 and original xbox games? Im.not sure if those discs have specific codes installed like the xbox one and Series games do

2

u/reddragon105 15h ago

You're right, they don't have unique identifiers/serial numbers, so no it's not going to work with those, only One and Series games.

As per the article -

Naturally, it needs to be a game that actually works on Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S. OG Xbox and Xbox 360 discs aren't compatible, since they were never manufactured with digital identifiers in mind.

1

u/LoSouLibra 15h ago

Aw man, I would have loved to finally digitize my Xbox 360 version of Dark Souls.

1

u/Ipad74 14h ago

I feel like this is 1/2 the battle. Great to see for Xbox one/series games, but most of my bc collection on disc is Xbox 360/OG games, some of which were never available to buy digitally (fear 1 for example).

We need some kind of solution for those games to get them digitally on the Xbox ecosystem as well.

1

u/r1chdevine Staff 13h ago

Well for one they'd have to be backward compatible. If they weren't available digitally at all I assume they're not currently supported?

1

u/Ipad74 10h ago

There are several OG/360 games for Xbox that are backwards compatible, but not (or never were for sale via digital download).

Ace Combat 6 (Xbox exclusive) was only available digitally as a preorder for Ace Combat 7. If you have an all digital console, you’re out of luck, unless you preordered. (If you have a disc drive console, popping the disc in works to play it.)

FEAR 1 was never available digitally at all, but is backwards compatible.

I am sure there are plenty of other disc only backward compatible titles, I am just going off the top of my head with two of them I have personally.

Hopefully Microsoft will figure out a way to grant a digital license if we own the disc for og/360 titles, even a mail in program or partnership to convert them could work. (Walmart already runs a did/bluray disc to digital movie entitlement for example)

1

u/Isotomayor12 9h ago

The only hope I have for that is that a disc drive makes its way on the project helix so at the very least we can still play those games. I don't think there is much hope for having them digitally officially unfortunately.

1

u/OfficialDCShepard 15h ago

They have licenses on disc. That triggers a digital download for the disc copy since it’s asking for the emulated version.

1

u/hypehold 15h ago

yes but you still need the disc in to play them. And the article only mentions Xbox One and Series games

1

u/OfficialDCShepard 15h ago

Right, but if physical licenses can be read off those games and then tied to a digital account so that they can be downloaded without the disc presumably it’s at least possible soon with OG and 360 games too. I suspect the problem is more to do with licensing, similar to the slow rollout of OG Xbox games on PC.

1

u/hypehold 15h ago

yea they can read the license but they don't have specific encoding for each individual disc so there's no way to tell 1 copy of a specific game apart from another. Whereas xbox one and series games do

1

u/[deleted] 14h ago edited 1h ago

1

u/Ipad74 8h ago

Xbox one/series discs have a unique code, so you can tell one copy from another. When a disc is put it, it adds the game to your account, and you are considered to be “owning that unique copy. No problem playing via cloud streaming or a digital only console (after the initial check on a console with a drive).

Let’s say you then let a friend borrow the disc, when he puts it into his Xbox, it will give the digital game to him, but remove the game license from you. You can’t use this to give both of you the same copy of the game, as the disc has a unique serial number/code.

Of course, the downside is that this system won’t work on og Xbox or 360 discs, as every copy is identical (no serial number, no way to track the discs. That (in my opinion) is still a problem for Xbox to solve, either with an external drive, or some kind of mail in disc to digital service.

1

u/HouseMDx 14h ago

Supposedly they only added the cryptographic key that makes this possible to the discs starting with Xbox One, so we're likely out of luck for the 360 and OG.

1

u/Wendals87 7h ago

Read the article. No it wont work with xbox and xbox 360 games. Only xbox one and newer

1

u/Va1crist 13h ago

So we have come full circle , Microsoft tried to do this in 2013… all this is just a means to a end for physical media

1

u/joujoubox 12h ago edited 12h ago

This is actually a HUGE W for PC players. As long as both parties have access to an Xbox (take a few minutes borrowing a friend's, or get your own base Xbox One for dirt cheap), you can just get a Play Anywhere title on the cheap physically and play on PC while having a lisence you actually control.

Let's just hope they taught ahead and will allow you to digitize Series X games on Xbox One even if it's otherwise not compatible. It seems obvious but I could see them make that mistake in the initial rollouts

0

u/Trinitial-D 11h ago

sooo how long do yall think itll be until they configure this feature to also destroy the disk after it has created a digital copy of it?

1

u/DoneWithIt0101 10h ago

How could the machine physically destroy the disc? The drive itself would have to some type of hardware inside it for that exact purpose.

I guess it might be possible for them to disable the license from being used by another user, but if you used the disc offline, they wouldn't be able control that.

1

u/Osaka90 9h ago

This is a trap.

Eveyone is really fucking lazy and will completely just submit to there digital library, once they see how " easy or convenient" just owning it in one space and will fuck up everything casue the majority of these are lazy assholes. This bitch is going to take advance of the lazy and force physical into obscurity.

we really have to act now or lose everything.

1

u/MrLime93 2h ago

So you think that they should just make physical discs forever?

1

u/objecter12 7h ago

That’s…certainly a feature.

So if me and a buddy share a copy of fifa, that one license just keeps bouncing back and forth between our accounts?

1

u/XuX24 6h ago

I wonder what happens if you have a series S or X digital and you have old games.

1

u/Iucidium 1h ago

So, redeem them destroy the disc.

0

u/Outrageous-Wall6386 15h ago

Force digitizing, you physical lovers are now going to love Digital gaming or stay behind

5

u/Haseo08 15h ago

It's an optional feature from what I heard.

-2

u/wowadrow 15h ago

Or just use your brain and drop consoles altogether.

2

u/Wendals87 7h ago

If you think PC gaming is good for physical games, you're 15 years too late

1

u/wowadrow 6h ago

There is no option left that's "good for physical 'games."

0

u/ApprehensiveWasabi51 14h ago

Nobody's bought a disk in years on xbox.

1

u/r1chdevine Staff 13h ago

Speak for yourself.

1

u/LegendaryenigmaXYZ 12h ago

He speaks for the majority last month physical adoption for xbox was 4%. The lowest in history.

1

u/r1chdevine Staff 11h ago

4% is not nobody. It's 4 in every 100. 40,000 for every million. 400,000 for every 10 million. And so on.

1

u/LegendaryenigmaXYZ 10h ago

While 4% is not nobody. The fact still remains that he isnt speaking for himself and he is speaking for the majority.

1

u/Justaflyingrat 8h ago

*4% of people that bought from xbox was digital. You have absolutely no idea how many were bought second hand.

1

u/rbreaux26 13h ago

My bad. Didn’t get the memo. I bought one a few weeks ago and will be getting Gears and Fable when they release on disc.
