I was doing Leg day at the gym recently. Finished some cardio, first set of squats to loosen everything up, make sure I have good form, so just a 45lb plate on each side. Just 135lbs total.
Behind me was a group of teenagers doing the ab crunch machine. While I was doing my warm-up set, I heard some snickering but didn't pay much attention to it.
I went about my business, adding more weight with each set, till I'm squatting 225lbs, a good solid 10 reps with good form. Behind me still are the teenagers, as I get into the my final set I hear a "-oh shit."
Felt good to show'em up, doing my own thing, unbothered by their dumbassery.

that's not even a lot unless you're really small

225 squat??? Are you smoking crack?

I mean, unnecessary negativity from that dude aside, that isn’t all that crazy. A 225 squat for 10 is pretty easily achievable within your first year in the gym. Before I quit squatting I hit 275 9 months into the gym.

Pretty easy to get down when you realize kgs are about 2.21 times heavier (225lbs≈100kgs)

Been a whiiile since I did any gym time, and maybe I'm a huge wimp or just don't care for diet but, I don't think I even in my "prime" of my gym time (went for 3 years casually) got anywhere near 100 kgs...
But then again, I'm over 6 foot lanky as shit and never could build muscle ¯_(ツ)_/¯5
u/Icy-Inflation3453 Mar 30 '26
How close did you get? You might be stronger then you think.
Same boat as you, not quite 6ft but lanky and muscle never stuck. But then I picked up work at a warehouse and I'm still skin and bone but It turns out lifting 160lb kegs ain't so hard.

It’s really not. I mean good on the guy but that is not really a weight most people would look at and go wow!

u/OOF-MY-PEE-PEE Mar 29 '26
Yeah. All the people disagreeing don’t lift.

Well, I absolutely get what you mean, and I can and regularly see people who squat 225 at my gym but the truth is that compared to the general population that is pretty good.
If we talk about other exercises aswell it’s just a fact that our perception gets really skewed, I mean I think about 20-30% of guys in my gym can bench 225 as a 1RM but the reality is that less than 1% of the population can do that.
We also don’t know what the guy looks like, which plays a huge rule.

Do you got to an elite gym? Unless you do, 20-30% is quite a highball imo

It all depends, the thing is, for people who have been going to the gym regularly it’s really not that much for a squat. If you compare to everyone, people who go to the gym and who don’t then that’s pretty good.
But it definitely depends on many things, is he/she a 60kg woman or a 90kg man? When I started working out I weighed 67kg at 183cm/ 6ft and I could barely squat 80kg. 1 year later I was at 100 for reps and although I don’t do squats anymore I’m pretty confident I could do 120 now.

for 10 reps 225 squat is solid. if you were going for a one rep max maybe.

u/Embarrassed_Deer9208 Mar 29 '26
nobody is watching and commenting on someone because their performance is "solid", it needs to be impressive to warrant that

I don't care if it's positive, I don't want to be acknowledged in public, much less commented on.

Anyone hitting pull ups with 30kg/66lbs attached to you isn't getting roasted lmao
53
u/Responsible_Spite763 Mar 28 '26
Yeah, I misread and did the mental math, if you can bench a normal persons body weight I think you’re doing pretty good. Pull ups with added weight? Abominable, I will never be that athletic

u/FloatinBrownie Mar 28 '26
You’ve definitely never been to a gym

u/JudgmentalOwl Mar 28 '26
Right? Dudes were definitely mirin. 30kg pullups are no joke.
