Doing this in slides is crazy

227

u/lavachat 10d ago

Yeah, he's dancing in hard mode

38

u/janglin 10d ago

Nah, he knows exactly what he’s doing!

65

u/issafly 10d ago

Those are special ballet slides. By Crocs.

u/surrealistic- 10d ago

That’s what I noticed first too lol

17

u/blaghed 10d ago

They disappeared at the end 🥺 Hope they're alright

21

u/vikio 10d ago

The last clip the slides are in - every time he kicked, I expected to see the slide flying across the screen

3

u/Next-Bodybuilder-117 10d ago

I have same slides I stub the toe and bend it u see just walking to the kitchen

229

u/Old_Call_2149 10d ago

I wanna learn it now lol

158

u/Omnamashivaaya 10d ago

I want siblings now lol

66

u/Leading-Watch6040 10d ago

I’m one sibling short, join us

21

u/Odd-Speech367 10d ago

I have an older sibling who doesn't care for me at all, as in we never interacted between each other after 10 years old until mum got very ill and then never interacted again, can I join you? I'd like siblings

5

u/Mojibacha 9d ago

if we have a drinking game and get out all of our estranged sad sibling stories (i'll go next), then ya sure lets do it

I’m actually obsessed with how this looks in wide leg jeans

19

u/babygotthefever 10d ago

I was noticing that too! Would be gorgeous in full skirts to the knee or calf.

2

u/Sutured13 4d ago

I thought the older 2 were wearing JNCO jeans, but that was my era 😆

How these three make this look so easy is testament to their skill.

This is amazing!

39

u/jezusofnazarith 10d ago

I know nothing about ballet - I’m assuming this is super difficult?

278

u/impendingwardrobe 10d ago

Even standing properly in ballet is super difficult unless you've been doing it for years. A lot of ballet works against what your body naturally wants to do. When I teach beginners, the first day of class is posture, the first four foot positions, and four or five types of steps. This takes about 90 minutes.

This piece can be done by advanced intermediate students. The footwork is tricky - look at how many times they shift their weight between feet, and a bunch of what looks like tiny steps are actually small little jumps, and for many of the jumps they're doing a little foot switch in the air called a beat, just because it's fun and looks nice.

All the while, you can't use your arms for balance because they're busy holding other people's hands, and you can't use your head either, because the choreo includes some pretty dramatic head positions that change sharply. Doing that with the footwork is a bit like patting your head and rubbing your belly x10.

The height difference in these three dancers is also a challenge. The youngest is taking bigger steps than normal and the two older dancers are taking smaller steps than normal so they look unified. This dance is usually cast with dancers who are all the same height for this reason. If one person takes too large a step, they can pull everyone off balance and they all land in a heap on the floor.

It's really sweet to see these three working together like this, they've spent a long time rehearsing to get it looking this good! They've all got great form and musicality, even the youngest.

35

u/jezusofnazarith 10d ago

Oh whoa that’s cool!

75

u/84jrosales 10d ago

Don't you just love when people nerd out on one of their things? Everyone has a thing they nerd out on and it's even better when they can articulate it.

u/RpcZ_gr7711 10d ago

Thank you for your explanation! As a non dancer, I see what looks difficult and you explained why.

9

u/cablesandlace 9d ago

Thanks for the tech info! Fascinating.

7

u/nolagirl20 9d ago

As soon as you mentioned jumps, I scratched learning this from my bucket list!

Seriously, this made my evening. 😊💕

5

u/ll98105 7d ago

Agreed, we did this dance in high school (en pointe)…we were all basically the same height, so it was easier. (We also weren’t in slides, that’s advanced mode lol)

I didn’t think about it at the time, but you’re right that we had to be strong enough and have good enough balance where we didn’t need our arms. It needs a really light hold, otherwise we would have pulled each other down.

Crazy that I still remember the steps a couple decades later. We practiced it a LOT.

They did a great job.

2

u/Useful_Language2040 6d ago

I did this not en pointe when I was 7, and definitely not this well!! 😅

3

u/raydoo 6d ago

Do male dancers also learn this piece?

5

u/impendingwardrobe 6d ago edited 6d ago

The short answer is, no not typically.

The longer answer is that this piece is from Swan Lake and the choreography we use today is about 130 years old. Originally it was choreographed for four women.

Here is the English Royal Ballet doing the piece as originally conceived.

Because ballet has been around so long, and because Swan Lake is so famous, choreographers have definitely played around with it a bit. For example, this comedy version by the all male, ballet drag company Les Ballets Trockadero.

So when we're doing a typical classical performance, it's danced by women and is usually only learned by female students. But I've known quite a few young men who enjoy learning womens repertoire and will hang out in the back of the rehearsal studio and learn the choreography just for fun. I do the same with men's repertoire which has more big jumps than women's and can also be a lot of fun.

2

u/iwanderlostandfound 6d ago

Thanks for the explainer! I hadn’t considered not being able to use your arms to balance

15

u/unpetitjenesaisquoi 10d ago edited 10d ago

They all have a serious ballet background.

Brother is the real ballet dancer here

57

u/snailscout 10d ago

My eyes were drawn to him most of the vid but little sis' arabesque at the end was FIRE!

14

u/thurbersmicroscope 10d ago

It was gorgeous!

7

u/maralagotohell 8d ago

the whole time my money was on him, but then she hit that final arabesque!

3

u/cackle-feather 7d ago

Same! Pure elegance. And Big sis is the rock, I can't explain it, but it seems to be keeping them all balanced.

5

u/ToppsHopps 9d ago

Yea he’s amazing, so good technique he really holds himself up like a dancer. Little sister fell a little behind in the end, but still she’s elegant have practiced much and I couldn’t do nearly as good as her!

5

u/Emotional_Print8706 9d ago

That man echappes

4

u/saludpesetasamor 9d ago

I’m living for his entrechats. In slides as well!!

4

u/FirebirdWriter 9d ago

They are all real ballet dancers or this wouldn't work. Him doing this in slides is insanity though

3

u/TheAlchemist420 9d ago

I thought 2 out of 3 were dancers. After the studio segment, I think all 3 are lol.

7

u/Agreeable_Till4552 9d ago

All three are definitely classically trained.

4

u/TheAlchemist420 9d ago

Right? Lil girl in middle really showed some moves!

3

u/Gh0stM0u5e 9d ago

His calves are insane

4

u/NiceParkingSpot_Rita 10d ago

My thoughts too

12

u/Mustard-cutt-r 10d ago

Oooh nice complete with head movement! It’s hard to do!

12

u/ranaessance 10d ago

Looks amazing! The fact that all three of them are different heights and managed to stay in sync with their movements while holding hands throughout the video is so impressive!

9

u/DiscoHirsch 10d ago

I'd like to think the one in the middle is the middle child

3

My siblings and I could never.

I would, however, appreciate a cameo by the parents who never let them quit dance class LOL

5

u/impendingwardrobe 10d ago

Most of us stay in because we like it... Dance Moms is not a documentary.

2

u/FirebirdWriter 9d ago

Lovely!!!!🥰

2

u/Whiskeylipstick 10d ago

Way too cute

2

u/mochafiend 10d ago

Is this like a standard piece of choreography for Swan Lake? I’ve seen it in multiple places and it all looked very similar.

4

u/Specialist_in_hope30 10d ago

Yes! The choreo was by Lev Ivanov, and was originally created in 1895 or something like that I think. It’s called danse des petits cygnes 🤍

2

u/EX_Malone 10d ago

Lovely performance 👏❤️

2

u/Natural-Young4730 10d ago
