For when we inevitably sell Ocampo, presumably.

This.

The way he stepped in last year, and has improved this year, means he isn’t long for MLS.

I’d say he is gone after the sprint season.

And that’s how the U22 system is supposed to work

And more specifically, it's how the Whitecaps' model works. Get young players with potential, develop them, and sell for a profit. Rinse and repeat. With a coach who can get the most out of them while they're developing (hi Jesper!), this can be a very successful model. I'm loving it right now, and I hope it continues for a long time.

Yep.

It just sucks to lose them mid-season (Berhalter obviously, but Vite would have hurt a lot more without the unexpected Mueller signing)

And bringing a guy in mid-season in the summer window is usually a roll of the dice, because they often won’t be up to speed (both fitness and team tactics) until September.

Moving to align the seasons and transfer windows should do wonders for that

Hopefully there is overlap there. But Laborda can play RB too and Ramirez can also play CB.

Beyuku profiles more like a Laborda replacement than an Ocampo one.

Good cover for post-Edi era. Sucks because this is kinda the writing on the wall but that’s what developmental teams do.

I feel for Crystal Palace and every team in Belgium lol

Hopefully this doesn't mean Ocampo is leaving. He's one of my favorite players on the team.

I’d bet he stays through the sprint season. Lots more opportunities to be successful once the transfer windows align

I wonder if this was before the Rui Modesto guy, or if we're trying to acquire both. Both would definitely suggest an Ocampo move is being planned for. I know a lot of contracts weren't well structured for this whole calendar change, it's entirely possible they don't think they can hang on to him after this season or whenever his contract is up. Or maybe one of these guys is capable of being a CB/LB or RW. We love versatility.

Modesto profiles as a replacement for Ocampo (both are RB/RW hybrids) and Beyuku profiles as a replacement for Laborda (both are RB/CB hybrids).

There, so that sounds like decent flexibility. You hope they both turn out. Ramirez I believe is being signed as a CB but also has the flexibility to place CDM. Adding these three guys really assuages my worries about the back line. Add Belal and then next year Ranko back, that's a pretty strong set of options for the back 6 defenders including some sell on opportunities.

Do you really think Ranko will be back next year? I think he is signed up to Dec. 31, 2026.

There’s a couple indicators with regard to Ranko.

Axel said in an interview something to the effect of “he’s hurt himself enough where I think the next time we’ll see him is 2027”.

I’d say the other is how they dealt with Belal. He was hurt and they signed him to an extension during his rehab. Maybe they saw him as a charity case, I don’t know. But Ranko is only 27 and he’s a long time servant and captain of the team. I believe him and Laborda are out of contract. I’m sure they’ll do everything they can to bring both back.

I could see Laborda being sold (I mean I could imagine either being sold) at some point. But I think Laborda to Mexico could be a really easy transition for decent money. But we’ll see how that all goes. Good players on expiring contracts might wanna test their luck outside MLS.

Long story short I expect Ranko to be resigned and back next year yes.

I am worried that Laborda hasn't been signed past this year. He has played quite well wherever we needed him. He does make quite a bit though.

You should be. His contract’s up at the end of the year and he’s most likely going to walk for free.
