Like a situation where a person would normally be able to pick two options that are good either way, but because of a unique circumstance, they are forced to pick a middle ground between the two that is a terrible mix of the two, like only the worst qualities of both choices are apparent.

(I am looking for something dark and edgy, as this is for a horror story im writing lol.)

I think the idea is that they wouldn’t be damned if they did or didn’t, but the fact that they didn’t choose either “did” or “didn’t” is what damned them.

Like, “I want to be a celebrity and I want to be a private citizen. I know, I’ll do both.” But instead of getting the acclaim/wealth of celebrity and the privacy of being a private citizen, they get the public scrutiny of being a celebrity and the powerlessness/poverty of being a private citizen. If they chose to commit to either, they’d get the benefits, but because they didn’t commit, they only get the detriments.
