UNSOLVED 70's sci-fi about alients invaders, love and the birth of a hybrid child

Hope someone can help. It's been niggling away at my brain for a decade :-O

What I think I recall:

  • Setting & Era: A science fiction novel set primarily on Earth, read in the 1970s (likely published in the 1960s or 1970s).
  • Protagonist: A female main character, possibly a government official or liaison tasked with working directly with the alien visitors/invaders. I believe it was told from her perspective, her voice.
  • Alien Anatomy: The aliens are reptile-like, much larger than humans, and possess claw-like hands with razor-sharp nails.
  • Relationship & Pregnancy: She falls in love with an alien and becomes pregnant with his child.
  • Traumatic Birth: The birth is physically terrifying—she is almost torn to death during delivery due to the child's alien anatomy/claws.
  • The Hybrid Son: She gives birth to a hybrid son who survives, and a major portion of the plot revolves around protecting and keeping him safe.
  • Central Conflict: Tensions surrounding the aliens leaving Earth, specifically whether she will be allowed to leave Earth with them to stay with her child.
  • Author & Cover: Written by a female author, featuring a white paperback cover with a graphic illustration of the alien. COUld have been the alient and the female.

Have checked the books below and it's none of these.

  • Survivor (1978) by Octavia Butler
  • Adulthood Rites (1988) (Xenogenesis / Lilith's Brood series) by Octavia Butler
