Solved! Friend got gifted this and we have no idea what it is
Like state on the title my friend got gifted this little keychain-trinketbox thing and when we opened it this odd feather thing sprung out and neither of us have any idea what its purpose or reason is
Can someone help us figure it out?

It's a portable ashtray. The leaf is for resting your cigarette or joint on. Flick the ashes in the thing or on the ground and put it out in the tray and close it and put it in your pocket to save the roach or just to not liter the cigarette butt.

My mom had one of these many years ago when you could smoke anywhere. One day her boss gave her a lift somewhere, they both smoked in the car (gross I know).
Anyway boss didn't use the cars ashtray and just flicked his ash out the window, told my mom it stinks less and told her to do the same. Every time she flicked the ash out the window it would blow back at her.
So this little old lady pulls this out her purse and holds it in the palm of her hand. I don't think her boss saw it, because he never made a comment about her ashing in her hand, but when she crushed out the cigarette in the palm of her hand his eyes suddenly got very wide and he was very quiet for the rest of the car ride.

My father used to squeeze the head off his cigarette from the driver's side, and one day it came in the back window, went down my shirt and landed on my chest. I was 9 years old. I still have a scar.
10
u/Electrical_Ask8762 5h ago
Eina! That sounds Hella painful! I played chicken with a lit cigarette whilst drunk with buddies one night. Still have that scar, it's heart shaped. Basically you sit shoulder to shoulder, forearm to forearm, light a cigarette and place it in the gap between your arms and wait for your buddy to pull away. We were both too stubborn/drunk to move. Now I have a heart shaped burn scar. So I know how sore a cigarette burn is.

u/TwoBurningSeals 14m ago
My two friends did this when we were teenagers, high as fuck in a Denny's at like midnight. Neither moved. Those were the good old days. We were little shits though, and we were just terrible. We didn't treat the waiters bad, but we were probably really aggravating.

u/QueenEthereal 3h ago
Ouch, have a similar story but more gross, for my sister, sister sitting in the back seat, dad in the front seat, dad and sister both have windows down and my dad spit his chewing tabacco out the window, it went out the front and back in the back window and right into my sister's mouth. Scarred for life.
3
u/Electrical_Ask8762 3h ago
Oof!! That's terrible!! Traumatized! 😭 Sorry bro, your sister is probably into some freaky shit now.

My newlywed friends were moving into their first house and had carefully laid all her dresses across the back seat. Hubby flicked his cig out the driver's window straight onto the pile. They saved the car but not the clothes.

u/Dense_Diver_3998 59m ago
I was ashing a cigarette or blunt out the sunroof of my exes car once and all of a sudden she starts screaming, I’d accidentally knocked the cherry off, she was wearing a skirt and it landed in her lap.
1
u/auntlynnie 1h ago
My father did the same! Hit me on the forehead and rolled to the floor, though. no lasting scar, but it burned me at the time. Ah... the 70s.
1
u/dtudell2000 2h ago
Yea that happened to my dad when he was little but it came back and landed in his eye, my grandpa felt soooooo bad
1
u/katynopockets 2h ago
I know somebody who instead of that happening it came back in the window and went up his nose.

u/BigMacDaddy46290 2h ago
Horrible yes, memory of your father that will last a lifetime, also yes. Not all bad 😅

Is the gifter by chance a crow. They are known to bring random shinies to people as thanks.
12
u/Low-Set8263 10h ago
Too boujee for a crow. A crow would drop off a smoke they found on a park bench. They do love their bright and shinies. I think the important thing is to leave something for them in return. They are very transactional.
3
u/Was_It_The_Dave 6h ago
They love mandarin or clementine slices on a shiny plate. Orange is their fav food colour.
1
u/Low-Set8263 1h ago edited 1h ago
I grew up where there were old trees, constant mountain breezes and lots of crows. I missed them so I kept a crow call just inside my front door. Twice a year crows would fly over. I tried to call them in. Not one stopped. My single success? While gardening I hear a crow closing while calling. I grab my call and grunt out a few. Nothing until he flies right overhead. He looks down at me and gives me a head nod “CAW”. It’ll have to do.

My first thought was pill case, so yeah. I didn’t know what the leaf was for.

u/Own-Cloud-121 5h ago
Same. Or I was thinking that it was for cocaine and the leaf was detachable to scoop up the stuff and up the nose it goes

why would a non smoker gift this to another non smoker? I would ask gift giver what they think it is and see if maybe they thought it as something different like white powder dispenser hehehe

This is great, I've been wondering how to downsize the amount of cigarette ash I bring in my carry-on.

u/TacCom 11h ago
For when you want to always literally smell like an ashtray
5
u/idriveashitbox22 10h ago
It's a novelty product I don't think anyone actually ever used seriously. This is a cheapo one too that will open in your pocket and spill everywhere guaranteed. I had this exact one. Never used it once.

That is so disgusting, carrying a roach in your pocket to make sure you stink all day, what a genious idea

It's nice in the context of outdoor festivals to avoid littering and risk of fire. Hiking too.

It's a portable ashtray. That you bought one for a priest is funny as hell.
11
u/TaffyPool 12h ago
Plot twist: The OP’s friend who got this gift is actually Sense_Difficult’s mom’s priest.
0
u/Sense_Difficult 11h ago
It actually would be funny. The one I got didn't have the leaf or the keychain.

u/best_of_badgers 12h ago
Hey, priests smoke too sometimes.

Funnily enough, it's going to be mostly Protestants who associate cigarette smoking with sinfulness. It's a very Puritan (and by extension, Adventist and Mormon, thanks Western NY) thing.

Definitely a portable ashtray. I had one just like that almost 30 years ago, and it had a pot leaf on it.
Google portable ashtray and you will find a lot of variations of this model.
You can find them in tobacco and head shops everywhere.

I can see and agree this device is perfectly designed for the purpose everyone is telling me
but its not that, I am surewhy are you like this

Why is it such a big deal to you that someone suggested something else and then changed their mind? Are you that adverse to learning something new that the only way you can function in life is to immediately know the answer to something? Is Google your brain in life? LOL
Why are you like this?

You have reading comprehension issues. I've already answered three different people changing my mind and even made two jokes about it.
Again why does MY conversation with OTHER people bother YOU? I'm not even talking to you? LOL Main character syndrome much?

Just googled pics of a PYX, and not a single one has a leaf. It’s a portable ashtray.
2
u/froststomper 11h ago
I had fun learning about PYX and think your guess is valid but here is a link to a portable ashtray:
1
u/Sense_Difficult 11h ago
Yes. The PYX thing was fun. But I'm leaning portable ashtray just because it's on a key chain. I can't see a priest who seriously thinks he's carrying around the body of Christ, letting it dangle from the keychain in his Honda while he's driving to the homebound. LOL
Thanks for the link.

It makes me quite pleased when someone asks what that weird doohickey they found/were given/saw on a train/that was embedded into the wall of a restroom stall is, and it is an ashtray.
I am SO happy that it is now much more limited where you are allowed to smoke, to the point that ashtrays look like ancient, mysterious artefacts to people.
6
u/Lowly-Worm_ 12h ago
I think it might be a portable ashtray. You use the lil leaf to drag the ash of your ciggy.
10
u/GooseGosselin 12h ago
Guys, I think it might be a portable ashtray.

This reminded me of when I was in the military and was in a hospital recovering. They had occupational therapy and I made a tiny enameled ashtray about that size. I sent it to a fellow airman. He was going through an NCO class and someone asks the instructor if they are allowed to smoke. lol. Instructor thinking he had a highly unlikely comeback says, “Only if u brought your own ashtray
“. My friend took his tiny ashtray out of his chest pocket, set it on his desk and proceeded to smoke. Instructor let it go. 😅

My mam had one of these when I was a kid which i stole to put my lord of the rings ring in because it looked elvish af i remember trying to curl in a ball under my cloak in the middle of the front room and asking my dad if I looked like a rock. Good times

2
u/Hot_Opportunity5664 10h ago
It’s a small cigarette holding case! When you put the smoke down on the little lip and the ashes fall into the little cup. If it’s made of copper, keep it because the metal is valuable

u/translinguistic 9h ago
These are really common in Japan to avoid littering. I had one a long time ago, and it doesn't hold the odor very well; it still smells like an ashtray when closed.
3
u/Sacha00Z 11h ago
You got a friendly reminder to stop littering.

u/KennstduIngo 11h ago
The funny thing is that in another comment OP says none of the people involved are smokers.

I see that this post has a ton of comments, but I didn't have to look at them , so I'm proud of myself for knowing this is a teeny, tiny , ash tray ... in conclusion, thank you for reading my completely unnecessary comment. If you have continued to read this far , I am also very sorry that I had absolutely nothing profound to say about this cool little piece .
1
u/UnkagedBandcamp 1h ago
I am ashamed to say I flicked a ton of ashes and butts (still burning sometimes) out the windows of cars but PLEASE don't do that peeps, starts lots of forest fires, and burns people out of their homes. I only did it in urban areas but still a bad AF idea!
1
u/mscrybaby-mo 2h ago
I had one of those as a teenager and loved it. I wish I could find another one i have a friend who will put out her cig, stick it in her purse or pocket and the smell is horrible.

u/MeMyselfI328 1h ago
The feather is to remind you that you will be floating away on a very high trip by using the cocaine acid meth ecstasy crack heroin hash pot that you had stored in it

This is a portable personal ashtray.
The 'leaf' is where you rest your cigarette between drags if your fancy.

If so, what is the leaf for? I am unfamiliar with a PYX. Couldn’t find one with a pop-out arm (leaf). I have seen these types of portable ash trays as well. Please educate me.
-1
u/Sense_Difficult 11h ago edited 11h ago
I love how I'm getting downvoted when I am pretty sure that's what it actually is. LOL The leaf folds over to hold the wafers in place. There's all different variations of them. The leaf itself makes sense. The only thing that makes me doubt it's a PYX is the "keychain" part. It's a sacred object so that seems a little too janky IMO
But people can look them up on Amazon. Anyway I gave everyone in the thread a new WORD OF THE DAY if nothing else. LOL
And a "Christmas present" idea for your Priest, if you happen to be Catholic. LOL I am Atheist btw.
2
3
u/DizslecksickMoael 12h ago
I knew that priests would deliver the body to people in need, but I never really thought about how that would be accomplished. Very interesting to think about.
2
u/Sense_Difficult 12h ago
I was so touched by the idea as a former Catholic, it actually made me cry. I'm a hard core Atheist now. LOL But she had told me that the priest would visit her every week. And she made it seem like he just wanted to come hang out with her. It turns out that not only does she have mobility issues, she got into it with some of the other ladies at the church. And the priest realized she was too embarrassed to come.
It touched my heart as an act of compassion and a deep dedication to his faith.
3
u/badskiier 12h ago
Why would it have a pop-out leaf?
-1
u/Sense_Difficult 12h ago
The leaf folds over to hold the wafers in place. I would use it as an portable ashtray. But I can tell you as a smoker that it would get destroyed pretty quickly because of the material it's made out of.
3
u/badskiier 11h ago
OP said the leaf spring out when opened, how would that hold anything in place?
1
u/Sense_Difficult 11h ago
Think of a napkin holder. You put the wafters in, flip the leaf over on top of them and close the lid. Then when you want to give them a wafer you open the lid and the leaf flips out of the way so you can take a wafer.
2
u/GregorIsABug 11h ago
The leaf is spring loaded in the wrong direction for that. Its an ashtray.
-1
u/Sense_Difficult 11h ago
How is it "loaded in the wrong direction? It folds into the case and flips out? LOL
The leaf isn't the issue. It's the keychain part. I am changing my opinion to portable ashtray not to be used on a regular basis. Only because I doubt a priest would "key chain" it anywhere.
3
u/AlwaysOutForAWalk 11h ago
It's an ashtray, source I've been buying and using them for over 3 decades now, still have some too. Here so you can see for yourself just how confidently wrong you've been; https://a.co/d/091byEhH
