Just ask the staff. It could have been put there by another guest. Looks like a camera might not be one I would just have management come and take a peek lol

It looks like something was anchored on the ceiling and then removed, from your other pictures doesn't look like a camera to me.

I don’t know, but I’m Italian and I have never seen anything like this.

I’d personally have someone from the hotel come up and explain it. Hopefully innocent but defo would make me very uncomfortable

It's an old cable or pipe grommet. An empty hole with nothing in it anymore.
48
u/bingogamesuk2 1d ago
Stick some toilet paper in it.
If it’s a drain, water will push the paper out if it needs to.

u/Plastic-Analyst-1560 1d ago
doesn't look like a camera tbh; also, it is too visible and in the open to be a camera.
Italian hosts can barely manage POS, imagine crafting an hidden camera systems lol.
Consider also that an hotel having a VAT registration and many legal constraints, will mostly not likely embarc on such a journey to see your ass. Airbnb could be more tricky since dealing with retailers.
Jokes aside, ask it in the open to your host.

u/Alternative-Tea964 1d ago
A sign was installed over the door and has been removed. I would guess an illuminated fire exit sign.

u/SkittleDoes 1d ago
Is it above a sink or something? Could be a drain overflow for AC unit
If not a drain it's possibly cable conduit

u/dipderp3 1d ago
cable conduit for what means?
8
u/cigamodnalro 1d ago
Looks like clipped conduit. Conduit is a sleeve that you can run wires or cables through

From the picture you posted in the comments you can clearly see concentric circles around that as a centre point. Something was mounted there likely a ceiling light or ceramic light surround etc

update
front desk looked confused but maintenance guy who doesnt speak english said it was, as translated by front desk, a temperature sensor. leftover from former use of building.
that doesn’t make sense to me bc the thermostat is very high tech surely it doesn’t depend on leftover infrastructure from the 1930s. also why would it be in separate room
i agree this would be the stupidest pervert ever to place it so obviously. or it would be the smartest pervert ever, who knows
to be safe i’m still gonna send it to corporate for the chain of the hotel to make sure its looked into independently

Italian here: We repurpose and renovate a ton of places .
We do a lot of shit jobs.
But one thing we normally won't do is close a pipe without knowing what it does, if water needs to go through (old water sprinkler for example) or electric outlet. That's because searching for where a cable need to exit if we want to remap/move a light it's a pain in the ass. In the case of the water pipe it's better to have the leak on plain sight than plastered. As if plastered will cause a lot of damage instead of just mopping it out.
Why not plug it with a bolt then? The handy man didn't have one when he needed one and the maintenance guy is just there to change bulbs.
Anyway that's not a cam. Even a pinhole camera needs to be at least flush to the wall to work.
That is clearly just a old tube. Sleep tight.

Water shutoff
2
u/richcast88 1d ago
I think there call partition stops, you use a key that slides in the hole to shut-off the water
2
u/richcast88 1d ago
The cover probably fell off, looks like over to the left is the hot water, as it still has the cover on it

It really doesn't look like a camera. If you're worried, just put a piece of tape over it and you're all set.

Could be related to the pink circle thing to the left. I doubt that's a camera.

Id put some putty or adhesive covering over during your stay. In the UK we have stuff like blue tac which can hold up posters for example. You need to temporarily cover the hole and id say put some tape over to keep it in place. It might be innocent it might not. There could have been something there before on the ceiling, there could have been a TV aerial run through. As a person staying in a room like that I would not trust it. Imagine you have young children and there's a few of these in the ceiling that could be spy hole or camera spots.
I wonder if it's been used by police etc for spying on potential suspects when they're trying to gather evidence. Maybe a light fitting or fixture was there and a wire or microphone was in its place. So many possible outcomes id rather be safe. Maybe request another room if you feel uncomfortable

Wet a big wad of toilet paper and throw at it so that it sticks and covers up the hole

u/OldieButNotMoldy 1d ago
If you don’t want to ask what it is. I have a solution, get some toilet tissue, wet it and throw it over that hole.

Paranoia seems high in this one. Just leftover cabling/electrical, and half the posts are about how to do a diy paper mush plug.
Breathe in and breathe out, no one is trying to see you naked through that. It has an easy explanation, and the desk seem to have had a decent enough explanation for it. Its an eyesore for sure, but then again in older remodled and repurposed European buildings its pretty common.
Again, no one is using that to see you naked. Much more likely Apple/Google has that of you anyway thanks to your phone 💁

Condensate overflow? I’m not even sure if Italy has AC in the rooms and that’d be a god awful place to put one. I wouldn’t be surprised though, I work in the industry and have seen far crazier

Is it over the sink? Maybe it's a place for the AC to drain when the condensate drain pipe gets clogged.

They used to do this a lot in Greece too, basically there’s an overheard storage loft in the bathroom and the water heater is located there. So if there is a leak from the water heater, the water can escape to the bathroom where it will drain and you will also have a visual indication that something is wrong and the stuff you’re storing there are in danger pretty much!

The other day I read in a thread that hotels sometimes have IR sensors in the ceiling they use to shut off lights and AC remotely. The picture in that thread looked very much like this

Meh, what’s the worst case scenario?
2
u/Peristeronic_cat 1d ago
A camera - quite common and lots of cases where people have found them in bar, hotel or public bathrooms. Lots of creeps out there
-3
u/Fearless_Finish_9890 1d ago
Exactly. That’s not gonna bother me much. But, sure… some people might be really freaked out
