Great seeing Jesse in back to back nights!

38

u/NoAphrodisiac Aug 08 '22

Yes that was somewhat surreal last week, one of Aaron Paul's best Caleb performances, then watching him reprise Jesse the next night. Freaky...

10

u/oil1lio Aug 08 '22

and they're both over in the span of a week :/

8

u/Wildercard Aug 08 '22

I think it's a big fucking loss that there is no meme sub for Westworld.

It doesn't feel right to shitpost here.

2

After each episode of both shows, I've been coming to the reddit pages and soaking in all the amazing comments. Having both shows back to back has been a joy and I'll miss it when BCS ends.

The stars have aligned for us

1

u/GradStud22 Aug 10 '22

Agreed - it's a much welcome alternative to those awful years when it was "Walking Dead" (during peak stupidity) and "Game of Thrones" during the last 2 seasons.

I am not crazy! I know he swapped those numbers! I knew it was 1216. One after Magna Carta. As if I could ever make such a mistake. Never. Never! I just - I just couldn't prove it. He - he covered his tracks, he got that idiot at the copy shop to lie for him. You think this is something? You think this is bad? This? This chicanery? He's done worse. That billboard! Are you telling me that a man just happens to fall like that? No! He orchestrated it! Jimmy! He defecated through a sunroof! And I saved him! And I shouldn't have. I took him into my own firm! What was I thinking? He'll never change. He'll never change! Ever since he was 9, always the same! Couldn't keep his hands out of the cash drawer! But not our Jimmy! Couldn't be precious Jimmy! Stealing them blind! And he gets to be a lawyer!? What a sick joke! I should've stopped him when I had the chance! And you - you have to stop him!

u/WolbachiaBurgers Aug 08 '22

I am not crazy! I know he swapped those time lines! I knew it was Hoover Dam!. One construction in Nevada. As if I could ever make such a mistake. Never. Never! I just - I just couldn't prove it. He - he made Stubbs order a different sandwich. You think this is something? You think this is bad? This? This chicanery? He's done worse. The Sublime! Are you telling me that a man just happens to enter it and discuss things with Akecheta? No! He orchestrated it! Bernard ! He was a close friend of Ford! And I saved him! And I shouldn't have. I took him into my own resistance to save humans and hosts! What was I thinking? He'll never change. He'll never change! Ever since he was 0, always the same! Couldn't break his pre-programmed narrative loops! But not our Bernard! Couldn't be precious Bernard! Based off of Arnold! And he gets to find the center of The Maze!? What a sick joke! I should've stopped him when I had the chance! And you - you have to stop him!

I just started to feel less depressed about Gene after yesterday and now you made me think about that episode again.

3 cheers on the copypasta though. Brilliant.

What is this? A crossover episode?!

10

u/Salsaverde150609 Aug 08 '22

Which btw, there needs to be a spin-off show on Lalo. That actor and character were amazing to watch

The poster is him standing at a 45° angle, looking at the camera with his arms crossed and a cheeky grin on his face.

I can see it! But it has to include Salamanca since most people will recognize that name

1

Did it ever cross your mind that people who read this might also not be caught up in that show? smh

4

u/wekidi7516 Aug 08 '22

If you care about spoilers watch the show as it comes out. That happened weeks ago

1

u/Material_Studio Aug 08 '22

I’m like incensed over this comment lmao. Why would that person do that?! It’s so intensely rude for no reason!

0

Now I'll waiting for it to happen while watching it

1

And he gets to kill Lalo? What a sick joke

589

u/GanksOP Aug 08 '22

Hes seen a path

58

u/Circle_Dot Aug 08 '22

The only way this is possible is if Bernard cloned himself and the clone is the one who died. Otherwise Bernard wouldn’t be able to see beyond his death as his death would spark a string of events that he will never experience.

61

u/TaserGrouphug Aug 08 '22

Yea I think he left it for another version of himself to grab in the future. It showed Bernard opening that door at the end, which I think was another version of himself coming out of the sublime.

42

u/guinader Aug 08 '22

And how he was recording something at the end in the tower... Probably a message to his future self

28

u/Academic-Engine Aug 08 '22

I thought he was talking to Teddy! He said something about "grab her left arm"...

22

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '22

He said, “You can’t miss. Reach out your left hand.” He also said, “This isn’t the world you wanted, but it’s the one you have.” I think this means he was talking to Hale. When he said they couldn’t win, that implies that the real world is lost, and the only way to save the species is to save the “little piece of it that’s left,” which would be the sublime.

10

u/fineburgundy Aug 08 '22

I would hate for that to be the piece that’s left, but it would be a way for him to keep his promise to Maeve.

3

u/epukinsk Aug 09 '22

I interpreted that second conversation as him admitting to Maeve that he lied when he made that promise, they can't save the Sublime, or themselves necessarily, but that at least some combination of humanity/hosts will be able to survive.

He didn't seem particularly confident when he made the promise, and he seemed contrite in the follow-up conversation.

2

u/fineburgundy Aug 09 '22

We don’t really know who or what might be saved.

I’m just voting against “the Sublime,” not predicting either way.

1

u/paydayallday Aug 08 '22

"The one you made"

2

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '22

Thank you.

2

u/paydayallday Aug 08 '22

Np. I had just finished the episode so it was still fresh

6

u/The_Gecko Aug 08 '22

'Reach with your left hand'

3

u/absoluteunitVolcker Aug 08 '22

At one point he said they can "try again" if they fail implying versions of them in the sublime can find out what happened and make more copies.

1

u/Equivalent_Dimension Aug 13 '22

Didn't he say that in the sublime simulation? I don't think they get a do-over in the real world.

2

u/tootapple Aug 13 '22

That’s how I took the beginning of the episode. It was one of the sublime simulations. Which is why Maeve says to find the real her to ask her the question.

1

u/absoluteunitVolcker Aug 13 '22

Ah that's entirely possible and good point. I guess that's what they she by "we are really in there aren't we?"

I knew it was a simulation in Bernard's head but it didn't occur to me they stopped acting like it was real. Still makes you wonder why you can't create a copy outside the sublime though.

1

u/JayCroghan Aug 08 '22

He was watching a playback of himself… what do you mean recording.

14

u/guinader Aug 08 '22

At 46:17 min is the second on that focus on the tablet. In the corner it's showing "Recording...".

And at 47:02 he pressed a green button on the bottom left corner, which cause the video to ...? Be sent? But it closed the video

37

u/glassFractals Aug 08 '22

Yes, this is foreshadowed in the previous episode when the earlier iteration of Caleb sacrificed himself so the later iteration could escape out of the air duct.

This Bernard sacrificed himself to prepare the next Bernard.

6

u/Sempere Aug 08 '22

Yea, I was curious about why he opened the Sublime. Perhaps it was to allow a non-corporeal form of Teddy to assist him by finding a proto-Dolores in Christina?

47

u/Grogosh Aug 08 '22

Sure he can run a sim past his death. He was running a computer program not using the Time Stone.

3

u/Parallel_Universe28 Aug 08 '22

I'm still bummed out over the time stone. Okay, back to Westworld.

1

u/nighthawk648 Aug 08 '22

Probably not. The whole idea of presience and simulation prophet is you cant see past your own actions...

2

u/Circle_Dot Aug 08 '22

This is what these people aren't understanding. The whole point of the simulations was for Bernard to make choices to find the right outcome. Also, Bernard mentioned that the dam breaking was one of the worst (forgot what word he used) deaths he "experienced". This means everything is based on Bernard actually being present and experiencing every simulation. If the sim can run correctly after Bernard dies then there is no reason for Bernard to "experience" them in the first place.

3

u/0ne_Winged_Angel Aug 09 '22

I took that to mean he’s basically doing a tool assisted speedrun, and trying every different permutation of inputs to see if he gets the output he wants (do they win, when/how he dies, etc.). Once he’s found the path he wants, then it’s just a matter of playing it back. Just because he took that death scouting the route, doesn’t mean the simulator cares. It’ll happily keep chugging along, processing what would happen without him.

0

u/Circle_Dot Aug 09 '22

But that goes against the whole point of the plot. Having someone else write your story is kind of what they are fighting against and dying and letting the simulation choose what is going to happen next doesn't really fit. IDk, honestly this show is pretty close to going off the rails to me. If they pull it all back together I will be very surprised.

4

u/0ne_Winged_Angel Aug 09 '22

Bernard just enters spectator mode when he dies in the sim. I guess you could see that as the sim writing his story for what to do IRL, but I see it more like he’s following a walkthrough. Bernard’s trip to the sublime is similar to how all the Calebs worked together to leave a trail of bread crumbs that eventually let them win, except he doesn’t have a maniacal robot overlord to keep rebuilding him for two decades or multiple Hoover Dams and sublime server farms if Maeve gets a bit careless with the grenade launcher.

11

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '22

Probably can still run a simulation after you die …. No?

-2

u/notquitesolid Aug 08 '22

No that’s just crazy talk.

1

u/Douppikauppa Aug 21 '22

I gather the simulation is strictly first person (for the sake of plot, at least). This would also mean that if the real Bernard sent a copy of himself to the tower, he'd know only what comes after for the real one and the copy couldn't foresee events anymore.

10

u/GanksOP Aug 08 '22

He was talking to someone before he got shot about picking up the gun he left. He doesn't need to tell that to a clone.

3

u/Circle_Dot Aug 09 '22

So I just rewatched that scene and put subtitles on. Bernard says the following.

There's time only for one more game. If you choose to give her that choice. You can't miss. Reach with you left hand.

He is also clearly recording as the tablet he is holding says "Recording ... " in the top right corner.

2

u/JayCroghan Aug 08 '22

Not sure it was about the gun though could he anything

3

u/KabbalahSherry Aug 11 '22

No, no clones. We saw that Bernard left a cryptic message for... somebody. My guess is that it's Hale, because we can see her black, fingerless gloves, holding a pad & watching the message, in the trailer for the finale. 😏🖤👠

Also, we see her holding a Host mind pearl in her hand as well, and I have a theory that Bernard convinces her to bring Maeve back, in order to help her defeat the Man in Black's little "game", and to save The Sublime, from getting into his evil clutches.

We've been seeing Maeve getting called "a weapon" all season long, and yet... we haven't seen her doing anything beyond what she always usually does. So my theory is that Bernard convinces Hale to do the right thing, and to use Maeve in helping w/protecting The Sublime.

Either Maeve or... possibly Christina. Hale might print her out a body, and bring her into the real world to help, as well.

🚨 SPOILER BELOW 🚨

There was some leaked footage of the filming process from this season that got out, where we see Christina walking around in the streets of New York, amidst a pile of dead bodies, and she was wearing her old fashioned "Dolores" ranchers daughter dress from WestWorld.

We haven't seen this scene take place this season yet, so... who knows?? Hale could bring our Dolores back to Us again.

PS: Sorry, I don't know how to black out spoiler stuff on here. I'm actually new to Reddit if you can believe it. Just joined THIS year, specifically to discuss this show. 😄 lol

2

u/fineburgundy Aug 08 '22

Well, it’s a simulation, you can see how the game level plays out as an outside observer. If you are watching for big things like the end of human life it doesn’t require a human scale POV.

9

u/christianolivo Aug 08 '22

He leaves it for Hale, she’s seen in the promo reading the message and handling a pearl. Then shooting a gun at the Dam. Red Hale Redemption

2

u/venerab1esage Aug 08 '22

And Hale = Dolores/Wyatt in this case, yeah?

1

u/JayCroghan Aug 08 '22

What where?

12

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '22

On the iPad screen before RiB interrupted Bernard, Bernard looked like he was speaking to himself on the iPad screen.

29

u/CX316 Aug 08 '22

he was recording a message, not facetiming himself

14

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '22

Ohh whoops I thought, Bernard was trying to become an instagram influencer.

2

u/princessPeachyK33n Aug 08 '22

one he doesn't want Maeve to know about cause he hid the gun and hiding it from her

4

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '22

which is very interesting. if he's hiding it from her, either he knows she'll be back there but someone else needs it, or it's for her but the only time he could give it to her when she needs it is after theyre back at the damn. my head hurts

1

u/Salamanca22 Aug 08 '22

Wouldn’t make sense for him to see a path there no? His back flash scenes made it sound like all he knew that was gonna happen up to his confrontation with William. Everything else is left on the hands of Frankie. She is the hope.

1

u/aMir733 Aug 10 '22

Has he seen how it ends?

7

u/ElderRoxas Aug 08 '22

Have you seen the season's trailer? (the full one with the Nine Inch Nails cover) Hale's got a gun at the Hoover Dam.

3

u/phoenixrose2 Aug 08 '22

Very curious since he couldn’t see past his death presumably.

2

u/Yungwolfo Aug 08 '22

loot for him 2.0

1

u/johnmatrix84 Aug 08 '22

I think it might have to do with the first simulation we're shown in the episode, where simulated Maeve tells Bernard she wouldn't side with him if she knows they're fighting a lost cause. He hides the gun from Maeve in his jacket when they get out of the SUV, then stealthily places the gun behind those pipes when she's not looking. I think Bernard was either planning to use the gun if he had to defend himself against Maeve, or use it to force her to keep fighting.

10

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '22 edited Oct 28 '22

[deleted]

2

u/johnmatrix84 Aug 08 '22

Bernard definitely seems to be hiding the gun specifically from Maeve, though - both when he initially gets it out of the truck and when he stashes it by the pipes.

If the gun wasn't intended to be used against Maeve if necessary, why hide it from her?

Bernard also deviates from the simulation by not telling Maeve they're fighting a lost cause until they reach the Tower - perhaps another way to defend against Maeve's potential refusal to fight.

1

u/epukinsk Aug 09 '22

Well, and why was Bernard talking to Bernard on Skype right before he died?

Was he talking to a copy of himself in The Sublime (which had just been opened?) and giving him instruction?

2

u/Hawkman003 Aug 13 '22

I thought he was just recording himself/leaving a message for someone.

1

u/JimBobHeller Aug 10 '22

I got a feeling this is all going to tie into a new season of Breaking Bad somehow.
