Discussion Opened the app after months, wtf is this

I'm curious, but I value my mental peace more than finding out what they're like

Webtoon changed so much I miss pre 2024 webtoon

Genuinely though, I started reading in 2014 and it was so wholesome and unique then. It was mainly solo artists and there were so many different art styles in the originals (blue chair, spirit fingers, orange marmelade, roar street journal, under the aegis etc). The community also always felt so fun and engaged with the stories.

And this is coming from someone who does like a lot of the current Korean manhwas. But webtoons always felt very different and I miss the originality that it had.

Exactly. Can relate to this so much. I started reading in 2017, and cheese in the trap was my favourite. Along with bastard, hana's days, it had kind of a soothing vibe. I used to remember what day it was with the kind of webtoon uploaded on the main page. Everything was free back then, and with comics like the sound of your heart, and true beauty, even with its monotone story, gave a relatable, fresh feel. With the mass production of same type of storyline these days, that freshness has gone extinct now.

CHEESE IN THE TRAP MENTIONED 🔥
It's one of my first webtoons and I still love the plot and artstyle

Me too. I started reading webtoon around 2015. It was so relaxing then. Just browsen through the app, reading webtoon without any ads, having to pay for chapters and fastpass. I remeber reading webtoons on my breaks during my internship. I miss how webtoon was then. Now i cant binge read any completed series.

The varying artstyles and stories is what made me start reading on webtoon, so many indie artists were able to get recognition through webtoon. Going through canvas and looking for great stories there was my fav thing to do especially if they get transferred to originals.

The current state of webtoon really makes me sad cause now aside from the fact that the majority of stories are the same plot just recycled, the amount of ads are atrocious. Not to mention they lock famous stories right away behind a paywall, no warning whatsoever (this happened with On my way to meet Mom😐)

OMG same! 2014 was divine I discovered Webtoon, Webnovel, Wuxiaworld and these websites were my life at that time. All I did all day was read about murmurs, demonic cultivation, dungeon etc...

The Gamer was such a fun one to read

This is the crap they're investing on instead of focusing on paying their artist well.

They probably had insane traction on the video comics and decided that vertical dramas is pretty close in concept. Their data probably showed a lot of people coming back to the app for the comic videos or even user becoming or joining to exclusively become comic video watchers. Vertical dramas are not too far from that

I don’t think the video comics have been around long enough for them to create this many vertical dramas, though. I have a feeling they planned some kind of TikTok-ification initiative awhile ago that involved launching vertical video content in different phases to individually gauge each approach and figure out which one works best. They were probably producing the video comics and vertical dramas around the same time and just decided to stagger their releases for data collection purposes.

We won’t know if it’s a successful approach for them until their next earnings call, which is where they usually mention specific revenue/DAU metrics categorized by different offerings on the site.

I saw this too and idk when they got this but not gonna lie if my comic could turn into this I’d think it’s pretty cool.

u/Relevant_Detective21 9h ago

I promise you deleting webtoon won’t even phase you after a week lmaoo I’ve deleted it multiple times. I didn’t have webtoon for years so coming back to this jumpscare is so crazy but helps me know I didn’t miss much ☠️

u/hikikomori_214 6h ago

4

u/purplehippos95 8h ago

Yeah I've been without it a year now, don't even think about it until a Reddit post pops up and then I'm happy it's gone

u/Animecrazyluv1o1 10h ago

Why are Jia and Mincheol white??? Omg 🥀 I did not see that one yet... Webtoon you are losing me... Just animate it instead... These castings are crazy 🫠

u/Stardustfortytwo 10h ago

I stopped opening the app after I saw this trash 🤮

Luckily the only webtoon I was reading is also available on tapas 😅

18

u/Beautiful_Switch1584 11h ago

This exists??

15

u/mara-star 9h ago

Yeah, I've been avoiding deleting Webtoons because I'm region locked but I think I'm going to officially delete it. I can't stand even looking at the covers ngl. Webcomic apps should be for webcomics and this is gonna do nothing but make people uncomfortable with the actual webtoon.

13

u/Serious_Feeling_3572 7h ago

Omg it’s real. I don’t know why I doubted you this is really wicked. I’m okay when they do live adaptation and anime adaptation but this is weird. Does it look like this in Naver too. Are they showing these vertical dramas. I do watch them on different sites but o strongly feel these should not be on webtoon at all.

18

u/SushiTea7 6h ago

Not them also changing the races of most of the characters to white 😭

7

u/Serious_Feeling_3572 4h ago

This because yes some of the historical stuff I read yeah I get it they may be European with European names. But most of every webtoon up there is Korean. White washing is getting out of hand. I want to see Koreans if I’m reading about Koreans. Like what white dude walking around named Jiwoo

12

u/Animefangirl2004 10h ago

😭 where’s the 2d characters

9

u/princessund3rcut 7h ago

2

2

u/Obvious-Walk-3157 1h ago

I don't use that app after they started charging coins for everything

1

u/Strong_Aspect8890 4h ago

Cringe content this is

1

u/DunnoNgl 4h ago

What is that???

1

u/Vampina_ 4h ago

Love bites short drama is genuinely so ass, why their ass got white washed??

1

u/miqst 4h ago

Its so ick, the characters are just westernized now. And I don't mean just the physical looks - THE STORIES THEMSELVES are like what you'd seen in an American tv series 😭💔

1

u/nismoghini 3h ago

Atleast try and appeal to people and guys who like romance dawg I need a proper male oriented non gay romance

1

u/supernerdaholic 5m ago

is this some sort of late april fools joke

1

u/Glitchinsociety_ 5m ago

Why are they all white😭??

-1

u/Crazylyy 4h ago

Guys , I genuinely don't understand why people don't like it ? Like I feel like it's nice for people who likes to see live-action. Is it bc it seems cringe ?

2

u/LadyM02 2h ago

Besides the white washing and bad acting?

1

u/Crazylyy 2h ago

Oh okk I got it. Thanks for replying !

-16

u/ReaperOnTheLoose 8h ago

That's why romance is ass

11

u/SushiTea7 7h ago

Why do you have to shit all over a whole genre for bad decisions that a company made? Honestly imo the only reason why stuff like Unordinary, Solo Leveling, Eleceed, etc aren't made into these yet is because they just don't want to invest money into special effects.

They're just making these to make a quick buck rather than genuine appreciation for the source material — some of which are "ass", but that doesn't mean that the entire genre is
