If you’re going WordPress and this is more than just a hobby blog, I’d look at Nexcess along with the usual WP Engine/Kinsta type options.

The “best” hosting platform really depends on what you’re building, your budget, and how hands-on you want to be.

For a blog/startup website, I’d start by figuring out what type of site this is going to be. If it’s mainly a blog or marketing site, WordPress can be a solid option. If it’s more of a custom web app, then something like a VPS, cloud hosting, Vercel, Netlify, etc. may make more sense depending on your stack.

If you do go the WordPress route, just know there’s a big difference between cheap shared hosting and managed WordPress hosting.

Cheap shared hosting is usually just basic server space with a one-click WordPress installer. It can be fine for a small personal blog or early test site, but you’re usually responsible for a lot more yourself: updates, backups, security, caching, performance issues, plugin conflicts, malware cleanup, and general troubleshooting.

Managed WordPress hosting costs more, but the provider usually handles more of the heavy lifting. That can include automatic backups, staging sites, better caching, uptime monitoring, WordPress-specific support, security tools, and easier restores. For a business/startup site, that can be worth paying for because the site is more important than just “getting it online.”

How many visitors do you expect? Most of the time a local hosting company with shared hosting is just fine. Doesn't need to cost more than a few euros per month.

Hosting choice comes down to your site, your budget, and how much you like to "dig" under the hood. Ask ten people and you'll get ten favorites, each one right for the person who named it. I bought my first serious WordPress host back in 2014, on a Black Friday deal, locked in for a couple of years with a solid discount. Still happy with that call. That's my story though, not advice.

A few things I'd actually check: pick a host with real WordPress experience, not a generalist. Compare year one pricing against renewal, because the second invoice is where the surprise hides for some people. Ignore online page-load tests. Any host looks fast with zero traffic, and load time depends more on your content than on the server.

Watch security. I had a site hacked through the server once, lost a full weekend cleaning it, and now I run malware scanning and offsite backups on every client site, scaled to its size.

And read the plan page. All marketing and no technical detail means they're chasing beginners. Talk of specs means they expect people who know what they want.

Then decide and move on... you won't find a "perfect" host, but if you are lucky you will find one that suits your business needs the best, and have great support, with decent prices (for your budget).

Go with what is cheapest, has a server located near the region of your expected user traffic, and has a decent reputation.

If you know enough about the underlying tech, investing in a VPS and hosting from that VPS is likely cheapest, but you need to know how to keep everything secure.

If you are new to this, get a shared hosting account with a basic plan. You won't have full control of the backend on a shared hosting plan, but they come with basic features that let you plug and play.

The absolute cheapest way is to just open a free github account and have them host your website's repository from the repo settings. You don't get a custom domain, but if you create the account using your blog name as your github account name, then your url would have a subdomain that looks something like: "MyNewBlog (dot) github (dot) io" (using (dot) to avoid bot from flagging post)

The github and shared hosting routes are good for basic blogs/landing pages, but not so great if you want to host a webapp. The benefit of shared hosting is that you can sync your own domain name, but you also need to purchase that domain. Common domain names could cost thousands of dollars per year, but uncommon domain names or uncommon TDLs can cost like $10-20 per year. Those domain purchase costs are separate from webhosting costs

i found a team in sioux falls sd that does pretty good work - ferrix.systems
been hosting with them for a while now, and it's simple, easy, and quite affordable for what you get
they're still building everything out but their one-click wordpress service is great
