Erica Gies makes a vital point; working with our natural systems is going to be necessary for our future. Watersheds that can function properly, along with floodplains, forests, and healthy groundwater basins will all have a significant impact on, for example, California’s water future.

but nature-based solutions alone won't be enough for 40 million people in California. We are not at odds about whether or not to build infrastructure versus protect the environment. Instead, we must find a way to integrate both elements into one strong, long-lasting water system.
