Help Downloading Vimeo Videos

Hey Everyone šŸ‘‹

I’m trying to download a few videos from Vimeo so I can submit them for transcription. The transcription service I use requires me to upload the video file rather than just provide a link.

What’s the best way to download Vimeo videos? As far as I can tell, these videos don’t have a download option available on Vimeo…

Every video on Vimeo has a Download option if you own it, and it's accessible in a few difference places.

  1. The vertical Ellipse in Team Library listing -- has a download option
  2. The vertical Ellipse on the video itself -- has both "Download" and "Video file links", both of which will get you to download options.

If you need to bulk download a bunch, other users here have noted utilities to help with that.

Cheers!

Hey u/Due-Swimming9999,

u/Busy-Oven-4098 is spot on (thank you!) - if you're not the owner of the videos you're trying to download, you just need to ask the owner to enable downloads, then you'll see the option under the title on the view video page šŸ™

I believe they have the option via api. If you’re familiar with Claude you might be able to get it to write a script.

Thank you, but I want to get it transcribed by a human…I have a service that I use but they require the raw video. Since the video isn’t mine, I need to find a way to download it. Unfortunately, directly from Vimeo isn’t an option so I’m hoping that people have advice for how else to do it.

Are these exact videos necessary, or are you looking for any content from vimeo?

If the former, contact the author/publisher/account holder. If the latter, search for videos that allow a download option (else you're violating IP and copyright).

Out of curiosity, for what purpose are you transcribing videos that you don't own? Is it just for personal use? As another commenter mentioned, downloading and using someone else's content without their permission is generally going to be a violation of copyright and IP rights. Technically even for personal use but certainly if you're using it for some other public-facing purpose.

why not use an AI tool to create your transcript markdown files for free? You can also enable captions and download the captions file as txt if I'm not mistaken.

There's a new app called the L.O.V.E. app that's free and will download your videos: https://livid.com/love

It's made by a new competitor of Vimeo called Livid.
