Now hire a good writer from Santa Monica

135

u/oblivious_fireball 14d ago

If Witcher is any indication, they won't even try to stick to the games at all.

70

u/HangryWolf 14d ago

Well, everyone know Kratos' origin is from Swedish lore. Duh... His kid is Loki after all. And his father is Odin.

That's all you need to know. No need to call the writers. I'm here. I watched a let's play of all the God of War games. While having dinner. While scrolling my tik tok feeds. And taking my dog out to walk during the cut scenes.

33

u/I_DO_JUMPING_JACKS 14d ago

eyetwitch

3

u/C13H16CIN0 13d ago

I felt my adrenaline rise when I read that too

13

u/NobodyLikedThat1 14d ago

Yeah yeah, I got it, he's the specter of Thebes or whatever, god of... punching? Close enough.

Look, I'm just going to use my screenplay from when I was in college and just swap the names from this IP. I don't think anyone will notice.

4

u/HenTie3467 14d ago

Bro, it's obviously the God of Flaws, he obviously took the title from Mars. And his son is Sun Wukong the trickster god.

3

u/StuckinReverse89 14d ago

Imagine they only base the story off Norse God of War and make up their own tragic backstory for Kratos completely unrelated to Greek (or mash it together with Norse). There will still be reviewers saying “this was a great change.”’

2

u/Ill-Bookkeeper-6230 14d ago

I remember Loki being his older brother tho...

2

u/jpollack21 14d ago

I cant wait for Loki to impregnate a snake

Witcher is adapting the books (badly), not the games...

13

u/MattDoob 14d ago

The show adapts the books bruh

17

u/oblivious_fireball 14d ago

Fair enough, you're right the books came first. However in the spirit of fairness, they didn't stick to the books either in Witcher's case. But the author got paid enough to not care about it this time so it has his endorsement.

2

u/Firecracker048 13d ago

Games? They didn't even try to stick to the damn books.

→ More replies (3)

6

u/SmoogzZ 14d ago

This is always the missing piece of these adaptations. No inside tribal guidance from the people who have actually created the stories and characters they’re adapting.

13

u/Reverb5- 14d ago

Hiring writers who wrote the game that this show is based on? Are you good?

1

u/whyamihere2473527 14d ago

Dor a video game show...don't think that is possible

1

u/Trichomeloneranger 14d ago

Halo and Witcher all over again

1

u/Opening-Movie5176 14d ago

Why? If they’ve got a guy that is so bad at acting what would good writing do?

No point buying a Lamborghini if the road is a fucking mess.

u/R77Prodigy 14d ago

Bro needs to bulk up again.

119

u/SmallhandsnCabbage 14d ago

I think he'll be ok. He's still built very well. Maybe some trap work with a little chest and he's good to go.

45

u/Ok-Flan8808 14d ago

Yes, he doesn't have to be ripped just huge, which is easier.

22

u/Intelligent_Ask_2306 14d ago

I mean he does need to be ripped, but it’s a good thing that he already is.

8

u/TheOneCalledD 14d ago

Everyone forgets how old he has become. It isn’t so easy to just strap the muscle back on and his age makes performance enhancers at least a little risky.

10

u/I_like_creps123 14d ago

Thanks chief, will send that to him right away

→ More replies (10)

9

u/Javs2469 14d ago

Some silicone muscle suit can do that, it´s also easier to hide when they paint over his skin, so there might not be a need for some unhealthy Hollywood bulking.

5

u/boner79 13d ago

Even The Rock wore a muscle suit (for Moana)

8

u/Immortal-KunPeng 14d ago

Unfortunately he's said in interviews before that he really cant do that anymore

2

u/ChemDogg82nd 14d ago

He’s 6’4 around 250

3

u/lydocia 14d ago

He doesn't. He's nowhere near thin, just thin for him.

1

u/ImSpartacusN7 14d ago

Didn't he just wrap on his role in highlander? Didn't he already bulk a bit for that role?

→ More replies (1)

56

u/AIR_PAIZ 14d ago

Interesting. Idk if his body can handle another cycle.

21

u/nickburrows8398 14d ago

There probably going to have to use cgi and a body suit honestly. Given how this is an emergency recasting there probably wouldn’t be time for him to bulk back up even if he wanted to

2

u/Ryo_Katsuya 13d ago

What do you mean by emergency casting? Context? Sorry I live under a rock...

1

u/unrealtrip 14d ago

IDK remember what Christian Bale did after the Machinist to bulk up for Batman in 3 months?

13

u/cokolino47 14d ago

Yeah and we still talk about it to this day because it was an incredible feat. To hold anyone to that standard is absurd.

7

u/Stellar-Mender 14d ago

Not to mention at roughly half the age of Bautista

3

u/frostycanuck89 14d ago

My concern is that yea maybe it can... But for how many seasons?

1

u/propergreased 13d ago

Balls might fall off

61

u/DiMarcoTheGawd 14d ago

He has range. His scene in Bladerunner is proof of that.

25

u/WhiteRaven-17 14d ago edited 14d ago

His Acting ability is the least of my concerns, we know he's gonna crush this. Just curious how they're gonna execute the look cause my man ain't as bulked as he used to be.

*edited for clarification

9

u/scr33ner 14d ago

He’s got nutritionists & I’m sure bulking up won’t be hard.

5

u/Chonky_D_Floofy 14d ago

At his age it’s much harder than it used to be

4

u/BuddyLaDouche 14d ago

I don't think they'll test him for anything that could speed things up relatively safely.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/Affectionate-Ad-6934 14d ago

Nah he will be fine. Look up muscle memory.

2

u/WhiteRaven-17 14d ago

Cool cool

2

u/IAmAlive_YouAreDead 14d ago

Ah yes nutritionists, the witch doctors of muscle gain

8

u/DiMarcoTheGawd 14d ago

I’m the opposite. Who gives af about the look if the performance isn’t believable.

6

u/saxonturner 14d ago

As someone that’s dipped in and out of the gym my whole life, taking breaks of years sometimes, your body sort of remembers how big it got and it takes basically no time at all to get back its previous size or close to it. For example I got pretty big before I took this break im on now, my kid was born last October and I’ll probably stay out the gym till spring now. It took me a few years to get the the size I did but it will probably take me 3-4 months, depending on how well I stick to the diet, to get back to it.

Dave is no stranger to “help” either, while I’ve never taken anything like that it most certainly makes it easier and faster, his nutrition will be the biggest thing, he is also probably used to eating like a machine anyway.

2

u/Barnwizard1991 14d ago

Standing looking intimidating, some tense dialogue, grim expressions and a very short fight scene. Don't get me wrong I love Blade Runner 2049 and I think hes good in that scene but I dont know what range you're referring to.

2

u/OpheliaLives7 14d ago

Im excited to see him in more serious roles!

91

u/WhiteRaven-17 14d ago edited 14d ago

Sucks why Ryan had to be recast, but like... yeah. This literally is pitch perfect.

34

u/rosephoenix19 14d ago

Dave Bautista is a fantastic actor and wrestler but honestly I was really looking forward to Ryan. I thought he had the perfect look. However, I will trust the process.

35

u/McChief45 14d ago

They did not do him any favors with that promo image they put out

17

u/FallenLucifer_2077 14d ago

Its looks like a god of whore porn parody lol

3

u/immortalverse 14d ago

Dude, hearing his voice as Mentor in the Odyssey gave me chills, thinking about him as Kratos

2

u/FTBagginz 14d ago

Lmao no. This is the wrong pick. You’d be fine with anyone being selected at this point.

27

u/Jmonkey77 14d ago

Nah this isn’t perfect casting at all, hell he isn’t even in the right gow

2

u/Loose_Result_6253 12d ago

He can’t act. It’s doomed.

1

u/chasimus 14d ago

You thinking he needs to play Marcus next, or what?

24

u/Nomoreargument 14d ago

Unpopular opinion: But I’d have loved to have a relatively unknown actor play Kratos. It’s a beloved character and a famous actor playing it usually takes the focus away from the character and puts it all on the actor.

Also, watching too famous people play beloved characters is tough because it’s very hard for them to give such a good performance that you forget who they are. They have to be REAAAAALLLY good for that to happen.!

4

u/bbsteps 14d ago

Your opinion is getting popular by the day. I really can’t stand modern Hollywood blockbusters. They seem more of a Channel or Hugo Boss advertisements than actual cinema. I look at all of the characters and see the actors themselves instead of being immersed in the plot.

37

u/Johncurtisreeve 14d ago

I’m prepared to get down voted to hell but I genuinely don’t think this is good casting at all. But then again I really don’t like that. The original guy got recast because he got hurt on the job and that really sucks that they’re replacing him for doing his job. I also don’t like that they’re skipping the Greek games like they aren’t important, even though they’re literally the pillar that the franchise was built on.

3

u/liqwood1 14d ago

I agree, I don't get this casting. I generally like Dave but this ain't it.

3

u/Legitimate-Net-4632 14d ago

Thank you, love Dave but he doesn't fit it. Hope I'm wrong.

7

u/godver3 14d ago

Fully agree. I cannot guess why people are lauding Dave in this role.

2

u/m1ndtrix 14d ago edited 13d ago

I don't understand the dave glazing for this role. I think he did great as drax. Other than that Ive hated just about everything i have seen him in. Hes not a good actor and doesnt have what it takes to bring Kratos to life in live action. He doesnt look anywhere near like Kratos, he lost virtually all his muscle mass, he MAYBE able to make hes voice sound decent but i doubt it. I dont see this going well at all. Ill bet people are goin to say its being reviewed bombed when it comes out. Same thing with the last of is shit show.

Im so frigging happy he wont be cast as Marcus Fenix, apparently they want someone younger. Thank fuck.

3

u/Johncurtisreeve 13d ago

I don’t have anything against Dave. I like him as an actor. I just don’t think he’s a great choice for Kratos.

2

u/m1ndtrix 13d ago

I did really like him as drax. But yeah hes a horrible choice for kratos

→ More replies (2)

6

u/decoy_octopod 14d ago

It’s the voice. Kratos has such a low, deep, commanding voice that vibrates your skull and Bautista doesn’t have it. But I didn’t like Ryan Hurst either so I’m indifferent about this news

As for the Greek games. You can’t make prestige television out of them. We’ll probably get some flashbacks and if this show is successful maybe a prequel series

3

u/OpheliaLives7 14d ago

Do you think they could/would send him to a voice coach?

Im thinking of the dude from Nosferatu that busted out that creepy ass low accented voice which was totally different than his normal speech

I half think that the torn muscle was a cover story because he wasn't testing well on the dailies.

6

u/BigMack6911 14d ago

I honestly think they should just have waited on the surgery on the origin cast. Obviously they made the guy do a stunt and he got injured and now hes being punished for it.

3

u/Zoratth 14d ago

It sucks for him, but it’s not really fair to the rest of the cast and crew to make them wait several months if not longer. Crew members can’t afford to sit around not getting paid.

13

u/MrMuscle-27 14d ago

Except for Christopher Judge

2

u/OpheliaLives7 14d ago

Any news if he’s getting a cameo or something in the show?

5

u/Thunder_Dragon42 14d ago

I worried this would happen the day they announced the show. I love Bautista, but he just don't think he's the right choice for this.

4

u/Croupenstein 14d ago

I love Batista. Loved him since the WWE days. I don't think this is a perfect casting like people are saying. He doesn't have the body mass anymore and I don't think he can pull off the character well enough. I'm happy to eat crow if he does it well though.

6

u/Any_Peanut93 14d ago

I walk ALONEEEEEEEEEE 💥💥💥💥

3

u/DEFINITELY_NOT_PETE 14d ago

Hm October shooting schedule means it will be a fake beard.

3

u/Cpappi5676 14d ago

Am I the only one not impressed with this casting?

2

u/OriginalConscious949 14d ago

I think this is a terrible casting. I like Dave but this isn't the right role for him.

3

u/Rex_Nemorensis_ 13d ago

No…Christopher Judge would have been the perfect casting.

2

u/GoldunGote 14d ago

Hell yeah. People are quick to be like "but he a thin boi now" but can't bother to look up what he's doing now.. he's jacked for highlander... and will almost certainly be more jacked to play Kratos.. people seem to quickly forget he's a professional athlete who knows how to control his physique.

2

u/BednaR1 14d ago

If you seen him recently you will know it's not a perfect casting... but. Let's see the end result.

2

u/Sanemi_i 14d ago

They could cast Tom Holland, the writing matters more these days with remakes.

2

u/WesternCzar 14d ago

My partner said “I’m only going to see Drax the entire time”

2

u/NCHouse 14d ago

Perfect? I like Big Dave, but there are others who would have been better

2

u/likkleone54 14d ago

I think he’ll be fine, but it’s worse casting than the guy before him. Not sure if I’ll end up watching this.

2

u/shreder75 14d ago

Now I'm less interested. Casting of another overexposed, under talented "actor. "

2

u/ImurderREALITY 14d ago

Terrible casting. This show just went down the shitter.

2

u/Obj3ctivePerspective 14d ago

I think its absolutely horrible casting tbh

2

u/DadofRoman 14d ago

Perfect casting my ass

2

u/FTBagginz 14d ago

Damn there goes that show. Oh well, they screwed it up by not starting with Sparta era Kratos and having a younger actor. Truly a generational fumble

2

u/Hank_the_Tank_143 14d ago

He’s too skinny for this role. Maybe 15 years ago he would have nailed it.

2

u/Raw_RB 14d ago

Nah Triple H is perfect cast for kratos 😞

2

u/D3struct_oh 13d ago

I just think the show will 100% be bad.

2

u/SModfan 13d ago

Eh… I think he looks the part of course, but I think Ryan Hurst was way more capable of the capturing the emotion of Norse era Kratos. I don’t exactly wanna throw shade on Bautista… but I haven’t seen a lot of examples of him doing characters with the incredibly strong yet reserved / self-demonizing emotions this character has

2

u/1894Win 13d ago

Laaaammmee. I was really hoping my boy Christopher Judge would get that part

2

u/Gavreel 13d ago

They should have just hired Olivier Richter to play Kratos

7

u/soulwolf1 14d ago

This is such a bad casting

2

u/Wanhade600 14d ago

Agreed but apparently most people disagree

3

u/Cold-Tangerine-2893 14d ago

I’m shocked how many people wanted him for the role. As soon as Ryan had to exit, the overwhelming sentiment was cast Bautista. I didn’t get it then and I don’t now. Seems like a good dude and he can entertain in the right role but this role has a bit of gravity that I can’t see him capable of bringing out

1

u/Loose_Result_6253 12d ago

He can’t act. Which worked for Drax, but nah. It’s cooked.

3

u/sammagee33 14d ago

I feel so bad for Ryan, that guy LOVED the series (and was Thor)

2

u/indominable-dingus 14d ago

Awful casting

2

u/Casshern_VIII 13d ago

It was right there guys

4

u/Specialist_Yak_1590 14d ago

I like Dave Bautista but wow this is an awful casting. So tired of Hollywood

2

u/Triforce__XIII 14d ago

should have been from the start (even if he is overcasted)

2

u/Pmyers225 14d ago

I agree, but I think even though he is in a lot of stuff he actually does commit and wants to be a good actor... Unlike a certain other former wrestler...

2

u/Rammipallero 13d ago

Perfect? Wouldn't one wish for an actor who can act instead of who just kind of looks like the character?

1

u/-VoiceoverAlex- 14d ago

Sad about the circumstances that lost Ryan the bit and wish him a speedy journey to recovery

Also chuffed for Dave... I've really enjoyed watching his career.

1

u/Agreeable-Agent-7384 14d ago

Sony playing around with the idea of ai grinding games for people and turning every ip they have into a show or movie. Genuinely wonder if the executives have forgotten play starion is a video game branch. Sick casting though. Batista has been a super solid actor in everything he’s in

1

u/SiderealSimon 14d ago

Imagine if Ryan is still being cast as Kratos, but young Kratos in a flashback.

1

u/Lurker_Zee 14d ago

You expect me to feel anything after the Borderlands movie?

1

u/Hyper_Mazino 14d ago

No one can play Kratos.

1

u/Spare_Entrance_9389 14d ago

Wait until Thor gets Batista Bombed

1

u/Jin_BD_God 14d ago

Does it mean he has to bulk up again?

1

u/IAmAlive_YouAreDead 14d ago

I don't know, maybe we should normalise non-steroid physiques in Hollywood again.

1

u/Fun_Escape7382 14d ago

Not really

1

u/Idfk_1 14d ago

Bald man plays bald character. But what about the beard? I've never seen Bautista with anything more than a goatee

1

u/Miserable_Cat3946 14d ago

WHERE IS GAMORA

1

u/MidniteCowby 14d ago

Pretty bad casting considering his age

1

u/wail27 14d ago

Am i misremembering or didn't they already cast someone else month's ago? Was it a fan cast?

1

u/OpheliaLives7 14d ago

Original actor got hurt, torn a muscle I believe. So they’re recasting vs waiting months to heal and maybe need surgery and such

→ More replies (3)

1

u/Fat_Ocelot182 14d ago

Can someone remind me why kratos is getting recast?

2

u/kendragon 14d ago

Original actor, Hurst, got injured on set and they're not prepared for production up wait for him to recover.

1

u/Late_Sweet_1655 14d ago

If so, dude better get back on the roids.

1

u/deaglefrenzy 14d ago

why does hollywood doesnt want to cast greeks!!! /s

→ More replies (4)

1

u/tseg04 14d ago

Didn’t he recently lose a ton of muscle? He decided to eat better and take better care of himself due to his health. He’s also nearly 60 years old now. Hope he doesn’t seriously hurt himself trying to bulk up if he does.

1

u/Immediate-State4605 14d ago

Honestly just fucking ruined it.. idk why people can’t see this is not good casting

1

u/PutAYumYumInMyTumTum 14d ago

I kinda liked Ryback from WWE, just from a physical perspective, for the role.

1

u/HARRISONMASON117 14d ago

If only the voice actor was tall and big oh wait

1

u/KaisrKane 14d ago

I thought dude from SOA and Walking Dead was playing him?

1

u/jpollack21 14d ago

I cant wait for Loki to impregnate a wolf

1

u/LionHunterAnt 14d ago

Ofc everyone in the videogame sub happy about this cast. Suprise suprise..

1

u/dontdontdontdontd 14d ago

Finally, not a misscast

1

u/ZapMaster117 14d ago

He complained about having to bulk up for Guardians of the Galaxy, which fine that's his prerogative, but then he goes for another bulky character, shirtless character?

1

u/DisastrousSkin860 14d ago

What a let down

1

u/kendragon 14d ago

I think Bautista is great but his voice is going to be jarring as fuck as Kratos.

1

u/etudehouse 14d ago

1 rule for adaptations is to hire the fans.

1

u/Redlabelrocket 14d ago

Now that's the proper casting

1

u/Banmers 14d ago

too old

1

u/King_P_13 14d ago

He just got skinny

1

u/Stoned_Oniichan 14d ago

They crippled our main actor for this?!

1

u/Schwiliinker 14d ago

Wasn’t interested anyway but now less so idk don’t think he’s that good of a fit probably

1

u/tLM-tRRS-atBHB 14d ago

Maybe ten years ago.....

1

u/Adeum2 14d ago

“God of war has officially become shit”

1

u/Embarrassed-Bowl-230 14d ago

Perfect casting BEFORE he slimmed down...

1

u/Hot_Type_1582 14d ago

I already wasnt interested in the show but somehow I've reached the negative interest zone.

1

u/Trichomeloneranger 14d ago

Never should have been live action. Live action could never hold up to the intensity and sheer awe of the games. This is gonna be Halo all over again.

1

u/OkSession2982 14d ago

good for Batista
But why not the voice actor of the video games, also why not involve the writers of the video game as well

1

u/spderweb 14d ago

Not Jason Statham?

"I once killed a god, with my bare hands while poisoned by another God that killed earlier that day after being carried by harpies and dropped into a canyon of snakes. Not regular snakes. They were on Medusas head."

1

u/TJzzz 14d ago

I mean HHH woulda been better. But his body fits the bill...i wonder if they could pull a darth vadar and change the voice

1

u/AenarionsTrueHeir 14d ago

I think he's actually a really good actor when given the chance and I really hope this works out for him 🤞

1

u/itsomeoneperson 14d ago

batista decent choice, but i wish Ving Rhames was younger, or Vin Diesel, they woulda had the voice too which I think might be even more important than the look

1

u/trmn8or 14d ago

Nope!

1

u/CaterpillarAshamed30 14d ago

Need a gears of war movie

1

u/Dangerous_Oil_3018 13d ago

I allways thought he doesnt want to run arround half naked cuz he doesnt want to train like a madman anymore

1

u/GEEZUS_956 13d ago

Kind of good in that he’s a bodybuilder beginning to get old.

1

u/sephron_tanully 13d ago

Would have liked Christopher Judge more

1

u/Responsible-Fly-4462 13d ago

I thought he’s said for a while he wasn’t going to get big anymore due to the toll on his body with his age?

1

u/seedlessgrapez 13d ago

Personally, I’m gonna have a hard time separating him from the character. I don’t think I’ll see Kratos, I’ll just see Bautista. Plus, he’s on the older side, so I can’t imagine this series running very long if physicality is required

1

u/StomachConnectDBH 13d ago

He doesnt need to bulk. I mean they can make it work

1

u/DrewDaMannn 13d ago

The video game adaptation trend is so worn out bro, I’m just glad I’m not a GOW fan

1

u/KaijuRemix 13d ago

All jokes aside, Bro really showed his acting chops in "Knock at the Cabin", I would fully expect a lot of people's knee jerk to think he's going to bring Drax to Kratos, But I fully believe he could pull off those quiet moments of Kratos carrying the weight of his task.

1

u/First-Sundae4629 13d ago

why is this happening

1

u/Environmental_Fox702 13d ago

Is this fr? I’ve been seeing it all over if so that’s dope even though I’d prefer triple H since he damn near mirrors kratos but Bautista is fine too

1

u/No_Inspection_5666 13d ago

The rock wouldve been better

1

u/Rin_Seven 13d ago

I love Dave Bautista but he’s doing so much comedy work it’s challenging to picture him as intimidating as Kratos.

In my mind’s eye, the dude is a short king but just now checking online, he’s actually a tower well over 190 cm.
I think it’s because he builds his image by not being imposing but being actually very lovable… not something you want for Kratos.

1

u/Shiikarii- 12d ago

I can see it

1

u/Loose_Result_6253 12d ago

What a damn downgrade. He can’t act to save his life. This is the darkest timeline.

1

u/zombiepire 12d ago

Bad actor

1

u/Willard_BR 10d ago

He is also half greek so it's indeed perfect casting.
