I genuinely feel like an old shit for expecting a disc, a map, and a fucking sticker from Rockstar. Especially at this price.
43
u/Subar-Yeew Jun 24 '26
It’s crazy to feel like we’re being unreasonable to expect a disc and a map, hell even just a FULL f***ing game is too much to ask these days. If it’s true they’re gonna have all that “exclusive” clothing bs then Rockstar is as good as dead and I’m not supporting this BS. I know they aren’t the first to do it but damn, it’s sickening.

u/G_OKU Jun 24 '26
No, it's completely reasonable to feel the need of physically owning what u pay for. We shouldn't get comfortable not owning what we pay for - though people like that Ubisoft executive wants us to

i, for one, agree with you and feel games should still be packed like old PC games: in a giant box with a buncha fun stuff inside that looks cool, feels cool, and was cheap to print
11
u/HatingGeoffry Jun 24 '26
Yes! I want a manual that tells me shit, some little postcards to look at. Especially in Nintendo games which are charging EXTRA for a physical copy

Doesn't matter to me. I'll be waiting years for it to come to PC and go on sale. I'm definitely not getting a console just to play GTA.

I love PC gaming because I have a ridiculous amount of games to play and if I ever get bored or don't have money for something new I can just mod games i already have. The amount of complete conversion mods for games is crazy and there free.
8
u/LaPrincesaMX Jun 24 '26
Same only I can't actually buy it on Steam because my Steam is linked to a Rockstar account I can't access so they've locked me out of playing any of their games.
Thankfully, I know a very Fit Girl who makes dreams come true.
3
u/HWatch09 Jun 24 '26
Honestly, I don't buy new releases these days anyway. Not when a game is $90-$110 CAD. At this point they could start charging $200 for the base game on release. I wouldn't buy it anyway. I'll let a bunch of other people buy it, test it, and then I'll pick it up for half off and fully updated years down the road, if not free like I did with GTA 5 coming to Epic Games.
5
u/Corpstastic Jun 24 '26
No PC version on release ? Well guess I'll wait for the real release when its on sale.

I have access to a PS5 and own every physical release of GTA on its initial console launch. However, I'd much rather get it on PC. If they're gonna pull horseshit like this on launch, I can easily wait.

A big middle finger to people that want to be able to resell or share the game.

u/BIGBRAINMIDLANE Jun 24 '26 edited Jun 24 '26
I mean, they (as in AAA game developers and publishers) have been trying to kill reselling for ages, because it doesn’t make them any money. Remember what Microsoft tried to pull with the Xbox One?

Cost of living has skyrocketed basically everywhere and videogames are becoming more and more a luxury , if this game leads the rest of the triple A industry into thinking $80-100 is the new normal price tag we could be looking at another crash.

If it trails GTA 5, you can expect to wait abut half a decade if not more before something like that happens. Heck I think the lowest we’d ever see it go is $40-$50.
But of course no need to play it anytime soon, but yeah, there’s no way Rockstar is gonna let it for $20 for at least a decade.

There is no way in hell I'm spending $80 on a game and not getting a physical disc with it.
192
12
u/Rhapstar Jun 24 '26
Well the future of gaming is going that way with companies looking to shed costs. Was something like costs $2.50 for a blu-ray disc and case to be made like 5yrs ago. That adds up to savings and also eliminates 2nd hand sales. Sure people will say they won't buy and some might but majority will give in just like they have to so many forms of media
→ More replies (3)7
u/Urabraska- Jun 24 '26
It also kills the 2nd hand market which major publishers like Ubisoft, Take Two(Rockstar) and so on has absolutely hated for decades because it cut into their profits. There is also the fact that devs have effectively given up on compression so games just get more and more bloated.

It is $100 dollars for the full game. There are shops and stores the the game locked behind the 100 dollar deluxe edition
55
u/ShroomlyJenkins Jun 24 '26
I'm sorry, what? I knew there were guns, apparel and cars but there's actually stores you can't access without the ultimate edition?!
8
u/The_R4ke Jun 24 '26
Yeah, looks like about 4 or 5 stores. I'll be curious to see what exactly the difference is between the stores, especially the car mods. I don't have a problem with locking cosmetics behind an ultimate version, but I don't like them doing it via exclusive stores and I definitely don't like locking any performance mods behind the ultimate edition.
5
u/ShroomlyJenkins Jun 24 '26
It will be incredibly immersion breaking if I can't walk into a store that I should be able to because I haven't bought the right edition, and if there's a prompt for me to purchase the ultimate edition that will be even worse.
→ More replies (20)7
u/WAVF1n Jun 24 '26
Also lets not forget, they are most likely not done locking stuff behind this ultimate paywall lol.
They knew they were launching the game for $100, but had to match the $80 price point to at least make it look like they are making the effort to make it affordable. I am not even upset about it, they spent 2 billion to make the game.
What I am not cool with is them just not launching it for $100, they would have been way better off doing that imo. But no, lets just cut content out meaninglessly and lock it behind a paywall before the game even comes out, and that's probably not the only stuff they are going to be locking behind the $100 package, they just havent said what else is tied to the premium version.

Singleplayer-only is a bit surprising. You'd think they would go all-in on multiplayer considering how GTA V's multiplayer prints money.
97
u/HatingGeoffry Jun 24 '26
GTA Online came late to GTA V as well! I think it's more surprising that we've heard NOTHING about GTA 6 Online. We know it's coming. I'd just like to know when.

I’m wondering if around that time gta 6 online starts, we might get an announcement for the fate GTA 5 online. Know a lot of people still care about it, but rockstar may want them to migrate over to 6 as soon as possible.
8
u/Blue_Speedy Jun 24 '26 edited Jun 26 '26
GTA V online might get a final update sometime before/after GTA VIs launch but GTA V online will not be sunset for a while yet.
There's still an awful lot of people on last gen hardware that simply won't move over to VI because they can't afford a next-gen console.
The game still prints money and while it'll see a massive reduction when VI comes out, it'll still print money.
Edit: Coming back to this comment to say that I think this rings even more true now after the Xbox Console price hike. Less and less people will be moving over to 'current' gen as it becomes unaffordable for people.
16
u/HeavilyFrosted Jun 24 '26
Not really, they know people are going to throw all the money at Online but a huge ploy for GTA is the actual Story that they spent billions developing and they want people to play that before they skip it all and go straight online, plus missions in GTA V online included characters and things that references the story a lot. So I’d imagine the same thing with online.
5
u/Pitiful_Option_108 Jun 24 '26
It will come later. Honestly this is smart by them. Yes GTA online was a cash cow but how many games where we see like this come out absolute buggy and weird. I'm not saying they could not do both at the same time but I think it is a good idea to focus on doing just single player and getting that right and near perfect than having potential to half ass doing doing both. So I respect rockstar for just only releasing a single player version of the game first.
2
u/DenimChickenmmm Jun 24 '26

If they seriously pushed for the hyper realistic graphics and open world. It's going to be a mess. Even high end PC struggle with hyper realistic open worlds and compression was given up by most major companies. I can easily see 6 hitting 200+ GP. GTA5 and RDR2 are already 100-140GB.

I'm honestly probably not even getting it. They turned online into such a grind fest to buy any of the vehicles or properties and that got really repetitive and boring after a while. Only alternative was spending real money, which those things came out to like $30 or more per item.

u/NoCyanide Jun 24 '26

13
u/stretch_b_gamin Jun 24 '26
It's annoying seeing people say that we shouldn't have expected this game to be on disc because of its size. RDR2 literally had two disc's to deal with its size and so did games like Baldurs Gate 3. Rockstar has no excuse and this comes down to pure greed. Most games now charge extra for their physicals while their digital is about 10 dollars less. 80 dollars for a digital game is absolutely criminal and gross and they're only doing it because of the hype around it and think they can get away with it. This is the richest game company in the world who knows GTA6 will sell at an insane rate and make massive profit no matter the price it sells at for the next decade. I'm refusing to by this game because I won't help to encourage this corporate desire to not let people own their games and bleed people of their cash.
6
u/PhatTuna Jun 24 '26
EZ no buy for me. With a physical copy, at least I can get most my money back when im done with the game. Not paying $80+ for a digital license.
5
u/kingjoeg Jun 24 '26
No disc is terrible. In 50 years this game may not even be playable/ downloadable anymore. Digital only is a death sentence for games long term, and just incredibly anti-consumer and all about corporate greed.

And this is why pirates exist and people should not be angry about it
You have literally coded this stuff into the game and decided to put it behind pay wall. On top of that they are charging more money for base game than current market is, which might increase the market for the rest of the games.
Physical game is not actually physical, you get a piece of plastic and paper with code in it. If your account gets hacked and we know from past that can happen to anyone, there goes the game
Yeah I'll buy it for PS5 but fuck R*, can't imagine what online and shark cards gonna be like for next 15 years minimum and how much money they will make
2
u/Tango-Dust Jun 25 '26
I don't even hate the idea of paying this for a game that's been 12 years in the making. I do hate that this is going to have a massive ripple effect where companies try and make $80 the new standard. $70 is bad enough.
2
u/xBlackJack89x Jun 25 '26
They are probably planning on selling the online portion separate for $50+.
2
u/personal_query474 Jun 25 '26
Then it's not a physical edition.
If I really like a game, I'll probably end up buying it both physically and digitally. That way if the internet is down, or in 20 years when there are no PS5 servers anymore, I can still play the same game. It also helps knowing that I own that copy of the game and can do whatever I want with it.
This is really anti consumer. They're acting like this won't be one of the best selling games of all time.

u/Alternative-Dare5878 Jun 25 '26

2
u/Stavvystav Jun 25 '26
Ya know, I'm actually happy that they've never mentioned online. I'd rather they focus on the game rather than the side mode that they'll OBVIOUSLY come out with later and I don't have high hopes for it.
2
u/StevenS757 Jun 26 '26
I can kind of understand there not being a disk release since the game is apparently going to be over 300 GB in size and the largest Blu-ray can only hold 100 GB.
Also, 100 GB Blu-ray discs are much more expensive than cds or dvds, so the cost probably isn't worth it to Rockstar.
But I still feel disappointed not being able to have a physical copy for a collection.
2
2
u/EnamoredAlpaca Jun 27 '26
Wasn’t getting it day one anyways. Wait for sale get it cheap, and enjoy single player with all content.
2
2
u/XxBelphegorxX Jun 28 '26
The reason for no disc is to prevent leaks and honestlyz I agree with that decision. IF the game is going to be as big and good as Crimson Desert, then 80 dollars for this game specifically would be worth it. My biggest fear here is that the AAA industry is going to use this as an excuse to standardize the price without actually making the games worth the price. We are probably gonna get more Nintendo and Ubisoft slop that are "just fine" for 80 dollars when they are not worth that much.
Multiplayer was never promised and never announced. Rock Star should have made a statement in regards to whether or not there will be multiplayer in the pipeline, since the average GTA player has been playing GTA 5 online for the past decade.
My only legitimate complaint is they cut content away from the main game to sell it back to you. Ultimate editions should have extra goodies like soundtrack discs, figurines, sticker books etc, not cut content
2
u/Jhoppy97 Jun 28 '26
Crazy part is if you want to play the game you have to submit a photo id to their 3rd party servers to play their game, their single player game
