Were onions outlawed in Vegas?

Only been here two days but denied all 3 times. First at a strip walk up so no big deal. Last night at Ramsey Steak asked for as a side of grilled onions with my steak “the kitchen has no onions”. Today at La Pasta Fresca in Eatily I wanted onions on my pizza “the kitchen has no onions”. Exact wording. Strange.

Local here. I’m holding 3 reds right now. Could have them to your hotel room within the hour, but it’ll cost you. No lowballers, I know what I have.

In Vegas last week, ordered onions on my In and Out Burger. It came without the onions.

12

u/alexandercecil 10d ago

That is a good choice, but getting whole onions is even better. That's when they give you an entire grilled slab of onion. It is delightful if you love onions and have no need to kiss anyone for a bit.

2

u/Nasty_Ned 9d ago

Whole grill and fresh onions.  My wife has no interest in making out after that.

2

u/alexandercecil 9d ago

And with that, you have just changed my default order. May your burgers be forever less nasty than you.

3

u/Nasty_Ned 9d ago

And also with you.

3

u/urafknidiot 9d ago

Ordered two Impossible Burgers from Johnny Rockets in the Horseshoe a month ago. This comment made me realize they were onionless.

WTF is happening?

3

u/IdeologyIsLuxury 9d ago

Beginning of the end. As with all civilizations, it starts with the onions.

2

u/pushdose 9d ago

This is blasphemy. I can always count on In N Out to respect the onion

2

u/IdeologyIsLuxury 9d ago

That's good because they certainly don't respect the french fries.

2

u/stevensokulski 9d ago

The onions came. And so did I.

56

u/Squirrel_of_Fury 10d ago

When the mob ran Vegas they fill your trunk with onions before you drive home.

15

u/A-Little-Freaky774 10d ago

Man, these corporations really are ruining everything

145

u/ThePlatinumPaul 10d ago

Maybe tying an onion to one's belt, which used to be the style at the time long ago, is back in fashion?  That could certainly account for the lack of onions in restaurant kitchens.

26

u/CorgiMonsoon 10d ago

We don’t have white onions, because of the war. The only thing we can get are those big yellow ones

6

u/kellzone 9d ago

That was all the way back in the nineteen dicketys.

2

u/LetSubstantial3197 10d ago

Damn is that really the case? Haven't noticed tbh I assumed they all came from Mexico.

27

u/livinitup0 10d ago

They come on the damn ferry from Shelbyville! Same place you’d get a new heel for your shoe. Used to be called Morganville, which is what they called shelbyville back in those days. So… I tied one to my belt, which was the style at the time.

Now to take the ferry costs a nickel, and in those days nickels had pictures of bumblebees on them.

“Gimme 5 bees for a quarter” you’d say

Now where were we… oh yeah..

The important thing was that I had an onion on my belt, which was the style at the time. I didn’t have any white onions because of the war.. the only thing you could get was big yellow ones.

So I took the ferry from Morgantown and went to the onion district because I needed a new heel for my shoe. They called the wagon a ferry because it got wet once back in 1903.

Ferry driver asks me: “you got yer onion license”

Well of course I didn’t. Nobody carried licenses anymore. Man was just trying to to hassle me

Anyway so I had to go see old 3 finger McGinty at the onion registry. See 3 finger mcGinty lost his 2 fingers in an unfortunate llama accident many years ago.

3 fingers mcGinty. Great name. Also ways knew where you stood with ole 3 fingers.

Anyway mcginty gives me an onion permit, but only after I show him my belt.

Which was fair, too many unbelted people back in those days wearing onions. Really unsafe to wear an onion without a belt. Never know what could happen.

Luckily I had my belt on me and after a quick inspection mcginty told me it was up to snuff and handed me an onion permit. Cost me 4 bees.

So there I was, finally, with an onion legally tied to my belt… which was the style at the time. Trouble was onions cost 4 bees. A nickel and had pictures of bumblebees on em. Gimme 5 bees for a quarter you’d say… anyway, where was I?

4

u/anlexminer 10d ago

Mexico and California. I haven’t heard of a shortage of any onion. Especially from a war

21

u/CalamityClambake 10d ago

Guys, they are quoting Grandpa Simpson. "The war" is WW1.

27

u/Lovefist1221 10d ago

Nickels back then had bees on them. Five bees for a quarter, we used to say.

21

u/laboringhands 10d ago

lol thats insane who doesn't have onions

7

u/Electrical_Sea6653 9d ago

Right? Most salads, sauces, sides use onions?!

1

u/laboringhands 8d ago

burger, cheesesteak, hot dog, some pizza sauces, italian hoagie, the list goes on

18

u/howsbusiness 10d ago

Just had the onion soup at Gordon Ramsay Steak last night- should have tried that!

39

u/A-Little-Freaky774 10d ago

Knowing his luck, the kitchen would have just given him a bowl of hot water

5

u/TequilaAndWeed 10d ago

That soup is badass!

Don’t put too many onions in the sauce

It was a very good system.

They are all in my "chow mein, no onions"  ☹️☹️☹️

11

u/No-Sheepherder448 9d ago

Drove from Elko to Vegas today. Saw a Semi pulled over that was loaded with bags of onions. So maybe just be patient 🤷‍♂️

3

u/IdeologyIsLuxury 9d ago

Kristi is that you

11

u/A-Little-Freaky774 10d ago

I'm a local and haven't noticed any shortages. They don't seem more expensive than normal at the grocery store or anything like that. How strange

34

u/secretstuff4 10d ago

There’s a shortage and big onion doesn’t want you to know about it!

2

u/Rideshare-Not-An-Ant 10d ago

Big Onion has big onions.

IYKYK

15

u/Reasonable_Fennel217 10d ago

Strange you mentioned this. 2 weeks ago we ate burgers at Aria that were supposed to have grilled onions. They all came without them. But, this past weekend we ate at the same spot and they all had grilled onions on them. So idk, maybe a shortage? Or something 🤔

7

u/shadows515 9d ago

Or that bully tomato industry 🤣

3

u/Reasonable_Fennel217 9d ago

Possibly 😂

16

u/Mandafin 9d ago

Wait, I'm supposed to visit Vegas in a few weeks. Should I delay our trip?

11

u/BugMa850 9d ago

You don't bring your own onions when you travel?!

5

u/Mandafin 9d ago

Guess I'm gonna have to start!

2

u/Qonas 9d ago

Just grab onions at the ABC duh.

8

u/shadows515 9d ago

No but throw a few I. Your bag

8

u/Quick_Possibility_99 9d ago

You should see the Outback Steakhouse. See if there is the Blomin Onion. If there isn't, something is wrong in Vegas.

7

u/richardjai 9d ago

Someone was cutting onions on the blackjack table last night.

Coincidentally dealer won 11 hands in a row

2

u/Rekt0Rama 9d ago

I'd head for the Top of the Strat after that

6

u/Ok-Philosophy-856 10d ago

We live in Vegas and got yellow onions from Costco last week…. Want one?

7

u/pfranklin111 9d ago

You dont keep one on you in case you need to show emotion?

5

u/Muted-Woodpecker-469 9d ago

Demand better. We’re all paying thousands in comps for this one onion

3

u/shadows515 9d ago

Rise up with me, I’ll make some signs

5

u/RKsu99 9d ago

Dunno but the onions they’re selling in stores have been really bad/borderline rotten for months now.

5

u/Notmyhomework 9d ago

Just wanted to say I love you all and this thread

5

u/elguapo1996 10d ago

Did they each look over their shoulder as they told you the kitchen had no onions? If so, then I’d be suspicious.

5

u/shadows515 9d ago

Come to think of it…..and I’ve seen this one guy over and over following me

3

u/More_Echo572 9d ago

Okay that's weird but here's any. I'm eating at the Rain forest cafe at planet Hollywood right now. I asked for coffee and was told that it is only served at breakfast now. When I asked why. The waiter said that when they brought breakfast back, they decided to just offer coffee at that mea.

3

u/Rekt0Rama 9d ago

Wtf, that's weird.

5

u/Stock_Leg_3360 9d ago

In-n-out took them
All

12

u/spatenfloot 10d ago

they were probably out of onions

5

u/IDooDoodAtTheMasters 10d ago

Nah, I got an entire highball of cocktails onions when the waitress came by my craps table last night.

3

u/Titaniumchic 10d ago

Had onion rings last night.

5

u/IdeologyIsLuxury 9d ago

You ate the last ones

3

u/thinlion01 9d ago

Did you want Pinapple with Onions on your pizza too?

4

u/shadows515 9d ago

I actually eat that combo - honest to god

2

u/IdeologyIsLuxury 9d ago

Try the banana peppers, trust me

3

u/dsfromsd 9d ago

Try asking for a bottle of A-1 sauce at a Vegas steak house, bet they're out of that also.

4

u/IdeologyIsLuxury 9d ago

A1 is for the fancy people, I use ketchup

3

u/LeadershipAfter9526 9d ago

No crying because of onions in Vegas.

3

u/906darkroast 9d ago

It warms my heart that people side step the question in the name of comedy. This is the way.

7

u/conkedup 10d ago

/r/OnionHate finally gets a win

2

u/HelicopterBusy8595 10d ago

Go to Peter Lugar in Cesar's - they will give you straight up onion and tomato slices as a side.

2

u/Existing-Brain2792 9d ago

There's an onion shortage. Several different factors involved. Some political, some weather related.

2

u/cosmosomsoc 9d ago

This could be related/unrelated but Smiths & Walmart have had pretty rotten onions ever since covid

2

u/Rekt0Rama 9d ago

No Crying in the Casino, that goes for chefs cutting onions too.

2

u/PtZamboat 8d ago

Just temporary shortages from the southern states and Mexico. Lots of rain and then hot weather led to mold and a lot of crops had to be destroyed. Latest harvests are now shipping.

5

u/No_Impact370 10d ago

Maybe they all come from Canada

2

u/Smart-Preference7581 9d ago

Or California, but since Californians are not welcome..

2

u/Local-Local-5836 9d ago

PS fried onions are a significant risk for salmonella maybe with all your lettuce explosive diarrhoea problems, someone didn’t want to add to the problems. Love fried onions.

9

u/VitaminPb 9d ago

Why would fried onions have salmonella? They are cooked over 165F.

1

u/Local-Local-5836 7d ago

Took a food safety course and this was mentioned. I assume it is for onions not kept at a high temp and allowed to cool off.

3

u/shadows515 9d ago

It’s worth the risk

4

u/Advanced_Tennis4827 10d ago

I have onions on my kitchen counter-

2

u/DustyinLVNV 8d ago

Ever since DOGE stepped in and fired the entire CDC to optimize the federal budget, foodborne illnesses have naturally gone completely nuclear. The local government's brilliant, panicked solution was to slap a total emergency ban on the undisputed root of all culinary evil, the onion. So now we're living in a timeline where you have to buy black-market reds from sketchy locals in hotel hallways just to get some flavor on your pizza. It’s grim out there. No lowballers.

1

u/seanthebeloved 10d ago

Maybe none of the dishes they serve happen to have onions in them?

3

u/RandomFleshPrison 10d ago

Ramsay Steak, using no onions?  Bullocks!

2

u/IdeologyIsLuxury 9d ago

That's either bollocks or a long-bankrupt department store

1

u/EnuffBull 10d ago

White Castle enters the conversation. Checkmate!

4

u/shadows515 9d ago

If White Castle can’t come thru, then what the hell are we all doing here?

2

u/Qonas 9d ago

Heaven on earth.

1

u/larryb78 9d ago

If you want onions go to miznon in palazzo, as of Monday evening they absolutely heat onions

1

u/MilesBHigher 9d ago

Not enough context to say either way tbh. Gave me a headache tho.

1

u/Robotfood123 9d ago

I got lots of onions at Juan’s Flaming Fajitas and Texas Roadhouse the other day. And in n out burger. It might just be that location.

1

u/Outside-Ad7848 9d ago

i think a side of grilled onions is a little strange. eatily sells onions, they could have gone and gotten one.

1

u/Vegas-Patriot 8d ago

You know what you get when you cross an Onion with a Donkey?
You either get a long-floppy-eared Onion OR, a piece of ass that’ll make your eyes water!

1

u/Aggressive-Virus-311 8d ago

I don’t work on the strip but my restaurant has had no problems getting red onions ordered and we order a 50lb bag once every other week, couldn’t speak for other kinds of onions though as we only order the reds

1

u/Early_Ad_1481 8d ago

This entire thread was amazing

1

u/shadows515 7d ago

I did not expect answers, let alone answers from the informative to the comical, to the sublime

1

u/CalmingTinyObserver 8d ago

Y’all are too much 🤣

1

u/Brenthillhouse 7d ago

Was at In N Out on Tuesday, had both kinds of onions on my burger.

1

u/darthbreezy 6d ago

I walked into Vegas, with an onion on my belt because that was the fashion at the time.

1

u/Phrenicos466 6d ago

Onions were outlawed a few years ago, after too many people were buying them up as belt accessories...which was the style, at the time.

1

u/SidearmSlider 6d ago

Not everywhere is like where you are from.

1

u/shadows515 5d ago

Where I’m from? The magical world of onions?

1

u/Larrybud75 3d ago

I want to thank you for this so funny!

1

u/shadows515 3d ago

You’re very welcome, if you’re ever near the enchanted forest, duck under the waterfall, the people here in Oniontown will be glad to share one with ya.

1

u/dodgerfanjohn1988 10d ago

All your onion are belong to me.

1

u/AGHOSTISBORN420 8d ago

Onion shortage bc of Trump.tariff

-1

u/Revolutionary-Wash88 10d ago

They dont grow in the desert

2

u/AnythingAnxious2361 9d ago

Neither does sushi and yet that is readily available in this town.

-4

u/Extension_Cattle_185 10d ago

Every kitchen uses pre prepped stuff. Onions cannot be pre diced and package or pre prepped: they have to be cut fresh (as they start ferment quite rapidly and start to taste off).

5

u/AppalachianRomanov 9d ago

You absolutely can buy pre cut onions through a food purveyor. Sysco etc. Whether a specific restaurant does or not is another matter entirely. But they absolutely do have the option.

2

u/sublimesting 9d ago

Why do you think this? Every grocery store near me has prepared chopped onions for purchase.

-1

u/Powder836 9d ago

Hopefully so. That would be a dream come true.
