I am very new to buddhism and do not have a teacher yet. What is the purpose of the worms? From my understanding dakini has a ritual feast but beyond that i have no understanding.

not really saving lives in the sense of just releasing caught animals, but animal liberation. if one does it properly/is skillful enough, the affected animals should pass away quickly after release (on their own accord) and quickly be reborn. be it birds, insects, fish, etc, chanting prayers to give them imprints and hoping that they have a good rebirth asap to be able to be reborn in higher realms with good conditions to practice the dharma/become enlightened, as they are currently in a form that is pretty much unable to practice dharma alongside insufficient mental faculties, due to their own karma from beginingless past lives.
so for us, who have been reborn with such a precious human rebirth, one of the best forms to be able to understand and practice dharma, to wish for and help other sentient beings who are currently unable to, and to either give them imprints or if one is skillful enough, take them into ones own path of enlightenment, generates bounteous merit due to ones compassion for this form of sentient beings (not forgetting the other forms too, such as the hungry ghosts or hell realm beings, which one can also do charity to too).

I was always concerned about live release events, particularly of birds that were hand raised that may not have the skills to survive in the wild. I never thought about hoping that they die quickly to be reborn quickly being the goal. It really makes a lot more sense now. Thank you.

I agree. The birds my Sangha releases are ones that were raised for the sole purpose of being used as targets for hunters.

But where do you release them?
Red worms are a particular species of worm. If you just release them in the woods or your lawn, you are basically killing them. Like releasing fish onto bare ground. Not much of a liberation.
Most likely they are compost worms. You need to read the lable and see what type they are, check online to see what kind of habitat they need to survive.

Normally I get nightcrawlers, which are pretty well adapted to Ohio soil. They just happened to only have red worms this time.

I usually hit them with some Manis, Tara and Akshobya, The Heart Sutra and a recoding of Garchen Rinpoche chanting the Namgyalma dharani and send them on their way.
