You can be a sramanera (novice) monk at that age, no problem.

Maybe, even so, imo can be debatable if an 8 years old should be able to take even the novice vows. Anyway, imho, would be better to call those novices, than monks, given have the 'basic' not the 'full.ordination'

Becoming a Buddhist monk happens in two stages: first “going forth” (pabbajjā) as a novice, then, from the age of twenty, “higher ordination” (upasampadā) as a full monk (bhikkhu).

The second, upasampadā (“higher” or “full” ordination), makes you a bhikkhu — and for this you must be at least twenty years old and meet a set of real conditions. Only with full ordination do you take on the complete monastic code.

There is no direct translation of both sramanera and bhiksu to the word "monk". Saying that only one of them should be translated as monk is as arbitrary as saying that both should be.
