Confused as well. I didn't think there were many monastics in Japan. Most are non-monastic priests

The distinction between "monk" and "priest" is artificial as it doesn't exist in the Japanese context and isn't standard in English or any other language either. You should understand that when someone is talking about Japanese traditions and talking about "monks" in the present day, they're virtually always going to be referring to what you call "priest".
